00:00A London council has been hit with backlash from residents after announcing plans to axe
00:05its weekly bin collection and switch to a fortnightly pickup.
00:08Waltham Forest Council said that from March, residents living in street properties would
00:13have to wait two weeks for their black bin for general reviews to be collected.
00:18Residents responded angrily on the council's Facebook, warning that their black bins,
00:23which were halved in size a year ago, were already overflowing.
00:26One angry resident, Theo Theodoru, asked the council,
00:30would it be OK if I pay my council tax every other month from now on?
00:34Others said switching to a fortnightly collection would lead to an increase in fly-tipping,
00:39would attract vermin and increase the problem of foxes tearing bin bags apart,
00:43and would lead to foul smells, particularly in warmer weather.
00:47However, residents living in blocks of flats will continue to have their communal bins
00:51collected weekly.
00:52The Labour-run council currently charges one of the highest council taxes in London,
00:57at £2,173 for bandy households, for services including refuse collection.
01:05Waltham Forest said that 249 out of 295 UK councils with responsibility for bin collections
01:13empty their residual waste bins on a fortnightly basis, or with longer gaps between pickups.
