Apprenticeships are now leading to higher earnings than some university degrees. How do you think hands-on experience compares to academic study in preparing people for work

00:00For what I've done, for me, it's hands-on. Apprenticeships are better, you don't need really, so long as you can read and write and you can express yourself.
00:09I don't think you can beat actually doing it and seeing what it's like day in, day out.
00:16Years ago I trained as a nurse and since it's gone to university status, I think it's ridiculous.
00:22You do need hands-on and be able to relate to people and discuss things and follow the lead, if you like.
00:31Some people have all the qualifications going and can't do something that looks suitable for them,
00:36whereas other people that are literally good at particularly manual tasks turn out to be really, really good at the job.
00:47The role my daughter's doing as a qualified chemist, you couldn't gain the level of knowledge she's got through hands-on experience,
00:56so it's 50-50, it all depends on what the industry is.
