00:00:00Hi, boys.
00:00:06Meeting's over.
00:00:08Welcome to WatchMojo.
00:00:10And today, we're counting down our picks
00:00:13for the most iconic villains to ever make bad look so, so good.
00:00:27Number 100, Bizarro.
00:00:29The legacy of Bizarro is one that's extended
00:00:32far beyond the world of comics.
00:00:34Instead, this supervillain's moniker
00:00:36can often be seen used to describe just about anything
00:00:39on opposite day.
00:00:40That's because Bizarro started out
00:00:42as a negatively inspired doppelganger of Superman.
00:00:45You're right.
00:00:46All along, Luther tricked me, meaning kill him.
00:00:50No!
00:00:54The character has progressed over the years
00:00:56to become somewhat self-referential with regard
00:00:58to this premise, leaning into its inherent
00:01:01goofiness in a fun way.
00:01:05You're no match for my strength.
00:01:09Still, there's no denying that Bizarro's legacy remains
00:01:12secure within Supe's universe, if only due to his notably
00:01:16on-the-nose opposite superpowers.
00:01:18Arctic Vision, anyone?
00:01:24Number 99, Ares.
00:01:26The worlds of historical mythology
00:01:28have always remained a fertile ground for the imaginations
00:01:31of comic book writers.
00:01:32This character of Ares is no exception either,
00:01:35fitting in nicely with the Wonder Woman
00:01:37universe from DC Comics.
00:01:47His significance within that book's continuity
00:01:49can be seen with Ares' presence in the first Gal Gadot Wonder
00:01:52Woman film, with this god of war never
00:01:55straying too far from the fight.
00:01:57My dear child, and he's not the god killer.
00:02:05He embodies violence in physical combat,
00:02:07able to master any weapon and even inspire conflict
00:02:11by merely existing.
00:02:12Meanwhile, his armored visage inspires fear
00:02:15among all who dare oppose him, an emotion Ares uses to ensure
00:02:20victory at each and every turn.
00:02:28Ah!
00:02:29Ah!
00:02:30Ah!
00:02:31Ah!
00:02:32Ah!
00:02:38It is futile to imagine you can win.
00:02:42Number 98, Omni-Man.
00:02:44This one's tough, because Omni-Man's moral compass
00:02:46and motivations have shifted throughout his run
00:02:49within both the Image Comics books
00:02:51and his Amazon Prime TV series.
00:02:53This insanely powerful extraterrestrial initially
00:02:56intended to conquer Earth, a plan that
00:02:58included Omni-Man's brutal murders
00:03:00of the Guardians of the Globe.
00:03:09This shocking incident alone remained a talking point
00:03:12for both casual fans of Invincible
00:03:14and longtime comic book readers.
00:03:16This isn't how I wanted to do this,
00:03:17but I don't have a choice.
00:03:19Granted, Omni-Man seems to have come back
00:03:21to his heroic senses, but this troubled and deeply flawed
00:03:24comic character's actions still make us feel that he's
00:03:28appropriate for this list.
00:03:36Do you really think you can stop me?
00:03:38Number 97, Sentinels.
00:03:40It takes only two words for a Sentinel to strike fear
00:03:43within those in its sight, mutant detected.
00:03:47The Sentinels made a huge impression
00:03:49on fans of the X-Men franchise back
00:03:51when they first debuted in 1965.
00:03:53And they're still going strong today.
00:04:09The Disney Plus series X-Men 97 even
00:04:12brought them back to identify and neutralize
00:04:14mutants for a whole new viewing generation.
00:04:17Surrender.
00:04:17Surrender.
00:04:18Surrender.
00:04:19Surrender.
00:04:21Give them the forecast.
00:04:23Omega level threat detected.
00:04:26The Sentinels' tough exterior and energy blast
00:04:29can be devastating.
00:04:30But even more frightening is the contextual meaning
00:04:33behind their creation.
00:04:34The Sentinels basically embodied the live and destructive power
00:04:37of bigotry and hatred.
00:04:38An analogy for civil unrest that dominated conversations
00:04:42back then and now.
00:04:44Number 96, Talia Al Ghul.
00:04:46This DC comic book character may not possess any superpowers
00:04:50to speak of.
00:04:51But that doesn't mean that Talia Al Ghul
00:04:53can't disarm her opponents.
00:04:55We mean that both literally and figuratively,
00:04:57since Talia's proficiency in hand-to-hand combat
00:05:00might be equaled only by her ability
00:05:02to distract, dissuade, and seduce her prey
00:05:05with her physical charms.
00:05:06When I was a child, we had almost nothing.
00:05:10But on the nights when we had a fire, we felt very rich indeed.
00:05:15I assumed your family was wealthy.
00:05:19Not always.
00:05:21Talia Al Ghul remains a brainy, ruthless, and ever-present
00:05:24threat amongst Batman's enviable rogues' gallery.
00:05:28She played us again.
00:05:30She's also proof that a real-world, everyday villain
00:05:33can also get one over on the hero
00:05:36if they're written with the sort of dogged determination
00:05:38that defines Talia Al Ghul.
00:05:40Miranda?
00:05:41Miranda?
00:05:42Miranda?
00:05:43Miranda?
00:05:44Miranda?
00:05:45Miranda?
00:05:46Miranda?
00:05:47Miranda?
00:05:48Miranda?
00:05:49Miranda?
00:05:50Miranda?
00:05:51Miranda?
00:05:52Miranda?
00:05:53Miranda?
00:05:54Miranda?
00:05:55Miranda?
00:05:56Miranda?
00:05:58Why?
00:06:00Talia.
00:06:02Number 95, Baroness.
00:06:04The legacy of the Baroness can differ
00:06:06depending upon who you ask.
00:06:08For many, her legacy as a terrorist operative of Cobra
00:06:11resides within the hit 1980s TV show.
00:06:14This is the Baroness, a brilliant and resourceful
00:06:18Cobra agent.
00:06:20Others may have followed her exploits
00:06:22as a comic book villain, while younger fans might even
00:06:25point to her big-screen adaptations
00:06:27in the live-action G.I.
00:06:28Joe films.
00:06:29Hello, Jake.
00:06:30Enough?
00:06:31Now, you have to admit, you had that coming.
00:06:37It ultimately doesn't matter where you know Baroness,
00:06:40because this master of disguise has likely
00:06:42already figured you out, slipping a knife
00:06:44between your ribs before you're done listening to this entry.
00:06:48That's how dangerous the Baroness is,
00:06:49and why the Joes always need to be on their toes
00:06:52when this femme fatale is on their radar.
00:07:03Number 94, Skrulls.
00:07:05The secret invasion storyline was a big deal
00:07:08for Marvel back in 2008.
00:07:10Fans didn't have to wait too long for the villainous Skrulls
00:07:13to debut on Marvel's big and small screens.
00:07:23This race of alien shapeshifters attempted to conquer the Earth
00:07:27by impersonating many of her mightiest heroes.
00:07:30Their innate skill as warriors makes them tough customers,
00:07:33while their actual reptilian appearances
00:07:36might remind old viewers of the V television miniseries
00:07:39from back in the 80s.
00:07:53You're just like your father.
00:07:56It's the Skrulls' natural affinity for subterfuge
00:07:59that makes them particularly dangerous, however.
00:08:02And by that, we mean their ability
00:08:03to ingratiate themselves within nearly any society that lands
00:08:07upon their collective radar.
00:08:08It was fine.
00:08:11The little boy handled it.
00:08:13We helped.
00:08:14Talos.
00:08:15Come off it.
00:08:16How was I supposed to know that the whole thing was fake?
00:08:18Number 93, Sebastian Shaw.
00:08:20It takes a special kind of villain
00:08:23to turn against their own kind.
00:08:24Sebastian Shaw's mutant abilities
00:08:26to manipulate energy make him a powerful adversary.
00:08:30Adapt to this.
00:08:39Yet it's Shaw's status as a legitimate businessman
00:08:42and public figure that also makes him dangerous to know
00:08:45and deadly to anger.
00:08:47Shaw's leadership position within the villainous Hellfire
00:08:49Club also ensures that he has backup.
00:08:52But it was this mutant secret financial backing
00:08:55of the Sentinel program that felt beyond the pale,
00:08:58even for Shaw.
00:08:59I don't ask for favors, Colonel.
00:09:01I express my expectations.
00:09:03So let me say it again.
00:09:07I expect you'll reconsider.
00:09:10This villain always seeks to stack the deck in his favor,
00:09:13regardless of who or what gets in his way.
00:09:16If you take another step, I'm going to put you down.
00:09:18Of course I will.
00:09:19But where do I find the more evolved people?
00:09:22Send backup now!
00:09:26Number 92, Taskmaster.
00:09:28There are a lot of superpowers out there
00:09:30that feel almost too dangerous for one hero or villain
00:09:33to hold.
00:09:34One could argue that Taskmaster's ability
00:09:37to successfully mimic his opponent's fighting style
00:09:40makes him overpowered.
00:09:41And we'd be inclined to agree.
00:09:43Taskmaster is sort of a universal villain in the sense
00:09:45that when you think of him, you don't automatically
00:09:47associate him with a specific hero.
00:09:49Thankfully, there is that little caveat
00:09:51of Taskmaster's ever-present memory loss
00:09:54that occurs as a result of utilizing these powers.
00:09:56Still, this doesn't mean for a second
00:09:59that this villain from the 1980s wasn't
00:10:01able to successfully transition into the modern day.
00:10:08Taskmaster received a gender swap
00:10:10when it came time for a debut in the MCU.
00:10:12Although the character has consistently
00:10:14appeared in a variety of iterations
00:10:16for over 45 years now.
00:10:29Number 91, Mr. Miss Yes Pidowick.
00:10:32His name is the bane of voiceover artists
00:10:35around the world, including our own.
00:10:38Mr. Miss Yes Pidowick is a lighter-hearted sort
00:10:42of supervillain.
00:10:42Albeit one with an origin that dates back to the 1940s.
00:10:46Mr. Mixel Pidowick was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe
00:10:48Schuster and first appeared in Superman number 30 in 1944.
00:10:52Now, he comes from the fifth dimension,
00:10:53where our laws of physics do not apply.
00:10:56Mr. Miss Yes Pidowick inhabits the strange and the surreal.
00:10:59A nearly immortal being to whom the laws of reality
00:11:02do not apply.
00:11:03For Mixel Pidowick's powers, he's
00:11:05able to warp reality in any way that he can dream up.
00:11:08In the Silver Age of comics, this
00:11:10was attributed to a magical ability, which
00:11:12was why Superman was so susceptible to his hijinks.
00:11:14He delights in causing mischief and chaos,
00:11:17particularly for Superman, and can only
00:11:19be banished under some very specific circumstances.
00:11:22This has historically been tricking Mr. Miss Yes Pidowick
00:11:25into saying or spelling his name backwards.
00:11:28Oh, snap.
00:11:30I said it, didn't I?
00:11:34Don't underestimate this supervillain, however.
00:11:36Mr. Miss Yes Pidowick's true powers of manipulation
00:11:39are seemingly limitless.
00:11:42Number 90, Hugo Strange.
00:11:44One of the greatest aspects of Batman's famed rose gallery
00:11:47is its longevity.
00:11:49Hugo Strange exists as one of the oldest of the Caped
00:11:51Crusader's antagonists.
00:11:53Yet the legacy of this criminal genius
00:11:55has progressed and endured up through the modern day.
00:11:58Hugo Strange made additional appearances
00:12:00in Gotham Knights and Catwoman, and most recently
00:12:03reared his head as a professor at Gotham Academy.
00:12:05Strange's intelligence and resourcefulness
00:12:08likens him to other non-superpowered villains,
00:12:10a la Lex Luthor.
00:12:11This serves as a welcome respite from all of the gadgets
00:12:15and super suits so often found within the medium.
00:12:17Hugo is a genius level psychiatrist
00:12:20trained in psychology, chemistry, and biology.
00:12:23And those smarts aren't just bragging rights.
00:12:25He was the first villain to uncover
00:12:27Batman's secret identity.
00:12:29Hugo Strange instead hits Batman where it hurts,
00:12:32discovering his secret identity and thus putting
00:12:34the lives of Bruce Wayne's loved ones eternally at risk.
00:12:38I know everything about you.
00:12:42Your darkest secret.
00:12:45Your ultimate weakness.
00:12:48I know you are Bruce Wayne.
00:12:52Number 89, Lady Deathstrike.
00:13:00Holy shit.
00:13:03Number 88, Calendar Man.
00:13:04Ah.
00:13:08Well, of course.
00:13:09Intelligent, calculating, with a mission
00:13:13to take down Carmine Falcone.
00:13:16It all fits.
00:13:17Number 87, Finn Fang Fung.
00:13:35Number 86, Owl Man.
00:13:36You must have been a good man once.
00:13:39No, not good.
00:13:42Never good.
00:13:44After all, I'm only human.
00:13:48Number 85, The Batman Who Laughs.
00:13:51We admit that this supervillain possesses a strange and not
00:13:54so subtle moniker.
00:13:55But The Batman Who Laughs is nothing if not unique.
00:13:58This is a supervillain with a comparative
00:14:00Still, this combination of Batman's serious fighting
00:14:04skills and the Joker's absolute insanity
00:14:07feels like a case of design overkill,
00:14:09in the best possible way.
00:14:11The Batman Who Laughs is the Bruce Wayne of Earth-22
00:14:14in the Dark Multiverse, which is a multiverse that's
00:14:16comprised of every fear and bad decision
00:14:18you've ever made in your life.
00:14:20It's a story about a man who's been
00:14:21forced to make a choice between the good and the bad.
00:14:24And it's a story about a man who's
00:14:26been forced to make a choice between the good and the bad.
00:14:29It's a story of every fear and bad decision ever conceived.
00:14:31The Joker's amorality essentially
00:14:33puts the kibosh on Bat's do not kill routine.
00:14:36While The Batman Who Laughs is also
00:14:38outfitted with some extra weapons and armor that
00:14:41utilize dark metal that enhance this villain's attack
00:14:44strength and mental acumen.
00:14:45So when you need to adapt.
00:14:47And to adapt, you need to laugh away all the restraints.
00:14:50Everything holding you back.
00:14:51You see, a Batman Who Laughs is a Batman Who Wins.
00:14:55Number 84, Granny Goodness.
00:14:57Of course, if you ever want to see the old runt alive again,
00:15:02you will do exactly as Granny says.
00:15:05Number 83, King Sharp.
00:15:08And?
00:15:09Yes, that is your hand in our way.
00:15:11Very good.
00:15:16We're all going to die.
00:15:17Number 82, The Phantasm.
00:15:24Your angel of death awaits.
00:15:27You ain't the bat.
00:15:31Number 81, Black Mask.
00:15:33A whack job with the penchant for peeling faces
00:15:36is Roman Sionis, AKA Black Mask.
00:15:41Number eight, Mr. Sinister.
00:15:43No list of supervillains would be
00:15:44complete without an appearance by Mr. Sinister, right?
00:15:48This madman is obsessed with genetic engineering
00:15:51and perfection.
00:15:52A master manipulator who's determined to create,
00:15:54in his eyes, the perfect mutant.
00:15:57Don't fight it.
00:15:58You can't.
00:16:06Mr. Sinister has been a long time
00:16:09foe of the X-Men since his debut in 1986,
00:16:12recently returning in X-Men 97.
00:16:14I have studied you, Jean, and dissected you.
00:16:18Then face me.
00:16:19I'm shocked that such a coward hasn't abandoned Bastion yet.
00:16:24I was waiting for you to bring me what I want.
00:16:29He may have been born a human, but Mr. Sinister's partnership
00:16:33with Apocalypse had helped make him
00:16:35an eternal foe against good, an insane surgeon with the worst
00:16:39bedside manner imaginable.
00:16:40Mr. Sinister is a genetically altered human.
00:16:42Because of this, he has superhuman
00:16:44physical and mental abilities.
00:16:45He's also telepathic and able to manipulate
00:16:47the minds of others in a bunch of different ways.
00:16:50Number 79, The Court of Owl.
00:16:52A new photo, with a new group of men in masks,
00:16:55and a new assassin.
00:16:57The Court of Owls must live.
00:16:59Number 78, Purple Man.
00:17:01I will admit to keeping eyes on you.
00:17:05Spies are easy to come by for me.
00:17:09Number 77, Juggernaut.
00:17:10You're OK.
00:17:11Oh, thank God.
00:17:12Oh my God!
00:17:15Juggernaut!
00:17:17I thought that was you.
00:17:19I should have wore my white pants.
00:17:21Number 76.
00:17:22Man-Bat.
00:17:23Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
00:17:32Number 75, MODOK.
00:17:34There are certain supervillains out there
00:17:35with a look so unique that we can't help but laugh along,
00:17:40even while our lives are being threatened.
00:17:42Mojo comes to mind, as does the mental mobile mechanized
00:17:45organism designed only for killing,
00:17:48otherwise known as MODOK.
00:17:49Oh, a MODOK.
00:17:50Oh, I get it.
00:17:50It's an acronym.
00:17:53It's an acronym.
00:17:54Mechanized organism designed only for killing.
00:17:59Actually, that's MODOK.
00:18:00The MODOK series from 2021 underlined
00:18:03this villain's inherent ridiculousness,
00:18:05while also not forgetting that MODOK also
00:18:07possesses great psionic powers.
00:18:09Does this seem like a natural stopping point to go get food?
00:18:12Natural stopping?
00:18:13I just started!
00:18:14But Nightloaf, the all-night meatloaf place,
00:18:16is closing in an hour.
00:18:17No food, now!
00:18:18The first thing to do.
00:18:19Wait, how is it an all-night meatloaf place if it's closing?
00:18:22Granted, MODOK's tremendous intelligence
00:18:25was gained at the sacrifice of his physical form.
00:18:27But many have underestimated this diminutive powerhouse
00:18:31and paid the price at the end of MODOK's brain beams.
00:18:35Ah!
00:18:35Ah!
00:18:36Ah!
00:18:37Ah!
00:18:38Number 74, the ventriloquist and Scarface.
00:18:41He can keep sucking air, but Penguin ain't so lucky.
00:18:48Do it!
00:18:49Then ventilate that nook!
00:18:52Number 73, the leader.
00:18:55Oh, shoot it!
00:18:56Ah!
00:18:57Ah!
00:18:58Ah!
00:18:58Ah!
00:19:00Number 72, the Falcone crime family.
00:19:03You're clearly not yourself.
00:19:06You're confused, uh, sick.
00:19:12I think you need to leave before you make a scene.
00:19:14Number 71, Black Manta.
00:19:16Come on!
00:19:18Hurry up!
00:19:24Number 70, Mephisto.
00:19:25The Marvel Universe needed its greatest tempter,
00:19:28an opponent of good that could exist as an embodiment
00:19:30of lies, avarice, and evil.
00:19:33Mephisto answered this call and has
00:19:35been Marvel's resident ruler of hell since 1968.
00:19:39You feel frustrated, humiliated, defeated.
00:19:46Then maybe we can make a deal.
00:19:51This demonic entity can boast multiple Marvel
00:19:53greats among his enemies, from Ghost Rider and Spider-Man
00:19:56to the Silver Surfer.
00:19:58Mephisto's connections to the Christian devil
00:20:00are obvious, as are the villain's habitual tactics
00:20:03of manipulation and illusion.
00:20:05You.
00:20:08Worst f***ing deal I ever made.
00:20:12Many have bartered their souls against Mephisto,
00:20:15hoping perhaps to beat the devil at its own game.
00:20:18The House of Hell never loses, however,
00:20:20and Mephisto always plays for keeps.
00:20:30All right, team.
00:20:32Let's have some fun.
00:20:33Number 69, Baron Zemo.
00:20:36An empire toppled by its enemies can rise again.
00:20:40But one which crumbles from within, that's dead forever.
00:20:47Number 68, Amanda Walker.
00:20:49Ah!
00:20:50No!
00:20:51No!
00:20:52No!
00:20:53No!
00:20:55Damn.
00:20:57That is just a mean lady.
00:21:00Number 67, Emma Frost.
00:21:02You can stop trying to read my mind, sugar.
00:21:06You're never going to get anything from me
00:21:07while I'm like this.
00:21:09When I escape and annihilate every living planet
00:21:13and destroy my symbiote offspring,
00:21:17I will reward you with your life.
00:21:22Number 65, Poison Ivy.
00:21:24Batman's reputation as the world's greatest detective
00:21:27often feels indebted to the horrible film
00:21:29noirs and crime novels of old.
00:21:31There have been a number of film fatales
00:21:33within this DC universe as a result,
00:21:35with Poison Ivy existing as one of the most
00:21:37intoxicating of the lot.
00:21:39Oh!
00:21:40Ah!
00:21:41Ah!
00:21:44Her ability to manipulate the minds of her victims
00:21:47allows Poison Ivy to bend just about anyone to her will.
00:21:51Youth does have its advantages.
00:21:55Endurance, stamina.
00:21:58Meanwhile, her reputation as something of a seductress
00:22:01is one that's perfectly fine.
00:22:03But seductress is one that's permeated her appearances
00:22:06in both the Batman comic books and movie adaptations.
00:22:09Bat's rogues gallery is large,
00:22:12but Poison Ivy's name will always be on the lips
00:22:15of those describing a short list of deadly, dangerous icons.
00:22:19If you could just, you know, move.
00:22:21Silver.
00:22:22So I could just kill your friend.
00:22:23Absolutely.
00:22:24Over my dead body.
00:22:26Or female friendships.
00:22:29Ah!
00:22:32Number 64, Parallax.
00:22:34Your will is strong, but not strong enough.
00:22:38You are nothing without the ring.
00:22:41Ah!
00:22:42Ah!
00:22:45Number 63, Enchantress.
00:22:47Pathetic.
00:22:48Do you think you aren't on my list too, Iron Man?
00:22:59Number 62, Crossbow.
00:23:01Ah!
00:23:03There you are, you son of a bitch.
00:23:06I've been waiting for this!
00:23:09Number 61, Rhino.
00:23:20Number 60, The Void.
00:23:22The Sentry may be a superhero,
00:23:24but it's the Void that lurks behind
00:23:26the alter ego of Robert Reynolds.
00:23:28Specifically, the Void exists as Reynolds' dark side,
00:23:31a counterbalancing force that commits acts of evil
00:23:34against the Sentry's everyday heroics.
00:23:36The Void represents the embodiment
00:23:38of his negative emotions and thoughts.
00:23:40The duality of Sentry and the Void is further emphasized
00:23:43by the stark contrast between their ability.
00:23:45This split personality dynamic is one of the reasons
00:23:48why the Sentry's inherent fight against the Void
00:23:50is so compelling.
00:23:52It's a nice update to the symbiote trope
00:23:54of Spider-Man wearing the black suit back in 1982.
00:23:57Only with higher stakes.
00:23:59So to prevent the Void from destroying the Earth,
00:24:01Robert Reynolds had a device installed
00:24:03on top of the Avengers Tower,
00:24:05which actually held the Sentry Tower,
00:24:07and used it to wipe the minds of everyone on Earth,
00:24:09including himself.
00:24:11The Void can also attach itself to just about anyone,
00:24:13a la the alien Venom symbiote.
00:24:15But it's the Sentry's immense powers
00:24:17as a hero that makes his dark side
00:24:19all the more dangerous.
00:24:21The Void can unleash dark energy in various forms,
00:24:24including powerful energy blasts
00:24:26or concentrated beams.
00:24:28This energy can disintegrate matter on a molecular level,
00:24:30demolishing objects and rivals with ease.
00:24:5657. Solomon Grundy
00:25:0756. Electro
00:25:1855. Kang the Conqueror
00:25:20There are...
00:25:22well, a lot of Kangs out there,
00:25:24where they've assembled their own
00:25:26friggin' council to keep track of their number.
00:25:28They all possess one unifying desire,
00:25:30however, to conquer.
00:25:32How many did you call?
00:25:34All of us.
00:25:42Kang the Conqueror
00:25:44has existed in one form or another
00:25:46since 1963.
00:25:48A tireless combatant who's forever
00:25:50seeking the perfect challenge.
00:25:52Most make the villain in this case
00:25:54since Kang is frequently outfitted
00:25:56with the deadliest weapons
00:25:58and most powerful armor imaginable.
00:26:10The addition of his genius-level intellect
00:26:12and his futuristic battle tech
00:26:14essentially make Kang the Conqueror
00:26:16a formidable force for anyone
00:26:18unlucky enough to cross his path.
00:26:20You started a war
00:26:22and now you want to wipe away any universe
00:26:24that's a threat to you.
00:26:26That's what monsters do.
00:26:28That's what conquerors do.
00:26:3154. Captain Cold
00:26:33You ordered some ice?
00:26:40What's the matter?
00:26:42Don't you want to come out and play?
00:26:4453. Mad Hatter
00:26:46You're mighty in Gotham, Batman,
00:26:48but in Wonderland
00:26:50the Mad Hatter reigns supreme.
00:26:56He started hunting
00:26:58like a jungle animal.
00:27:04He changed so much
00:27:06that he took a new name for himself.
00:27:09Kraven the Hunter.
00:27:14I guess you haven't heard.
00:27:16I'm the sheriff around these parts.
00:27:18Okay.
00:27:2750. Catwoman
00:27:29Selina Kyle is another character
00:27:31that's shifted her moral compass over the years.
00:27:33She's sometimes depicted
00:27:35as an anti-hero, but her dedication
00:27:37to, well, cat-burgling
00:27:39still makes her a villain in our book.
00:27:41Good night, Mr. Wayne.
00:27:43Catwoman's
00:27:45one of the most iconic
00:27:47of the litter, as well as an eternal
00:27:49love interest for Batman with conflicted
00:27:51alliances between good, great,
00:27:53and evil.
00:27:55That was for saving my cat.
00:27:57Is that all it was for?
00:27:59Maybe not. I heard gunfire.
00:28:01Occupational hazard.
00:28:03Catwoman's athleticism and natural sex appeal
00:28:05make her the perfect thief,
00:28:07while her amorality ensures that Kyle
00:28:09is always willing to do what it takes
00:28:12to achieve her goal. What can we say?
00:28:14We just love watching Catwoman
00:28:16work her black magic.
00:28:18It's because you don't stand a chance against these guys.
00:28:20With your help, I might.
00:28:22I'll open that tunnel, then I'm gone.
00:28:24There's more to you than that.
00:28:30Sorry to keep letting you down.
00:28:3249. The Anti-Monitor
00:28:42Number 48.
00:28:44Vulture
00:28:54Number 47.
00:28:56Dent Shot
00:28:58Y'all jokers
00:29:00must be crazy.
00:29:06Number 46.
00:29:08Chiller Croc
00:29:10I don't want you crazy.
00:29:14Says the guy who lives in a sewer.
00:29:16At least I know it's a sewer.
00:29:18Number 45. The Mandarin
00:29:20Fans of the MCU
00:29:22were notably PO'd at how
00:29:24one of Iron Man's greatest enemies,
00:29:26the Mandarin, was treated in the franchise's
00:29:28third cinematic entry.
00:29:30Where's the Mandarin? Where is he?
00:29:32He's here. He's here.
00:29:34But he's not here. He's here, but he's not here.
00:29:36What do you mean?
00:29:38It's complicated, right?
00:29:40This misstep takes nothing
00:29:42away from the supervillain's relationship with
00:29:44Old Shellhead, since the Mandarin
00:29:46and Tony Stark remain perpetually
00:29:48within each other's orbit.
00:29:50This power-hungry martial arts master
00:29:52has also found himself with the
00:29:54master of Kung Fu himself, Shang-Chi,
00:29:56showing off the power of his ten
00:29:58rings. These rings are
00:30:00crafted from alien technology,
00:30:02and lend the Mandarin powers ranging from
00:30:04blasts of ice and lightning to
00:30:06iconic feats of illusion and manipulation.
00:30:20The Mandarin may possess
00:30:22at least a semblance of honor
00:30:24to his moral compass, but make
00:30:26no mistake, world domination
00:30:28is still on his to-do list.
00:30:37Number 44, Abomination.
00:30:43Force is not necessary.
00:30:45As you can see, I'm in full control.
00:30:47Number 43, Playface.
00:30:49Well, I filled in for the dog that played
00:30:51Air Bud when he was run over
00:30:53by me the second to the
00:30:55last day of shooting.
00:30:57Number 42, Carnage.
00:30:59I'm not a crazy man,
00:31:01but I am
00:31:03a vengeful one.
00:31:07You're
00:31:09going to watch her die.
00:31:11Number 41, Sabretooth.
00:31:13You don't call,
00:31:15you don't write,
00:31:17how else
00:31:19am I supposed to get your attention?
00:31:25Number 4, Harley Quinn.
00:31:27The meteoric rise of Harley Quinn as one of
00:31:29the DC Universe's most popular
00:31:31characters has been one long
00:31:33and strange trip.
00:31:35Where I go,
00:31:37deep below the bar.
00:31:39Fade for evidence.
00:31:41Selling me through my
00:31:43soul.
00:31:45She's often
00:31:47been depicted as being in eternal
00:31:49orbit with the Joker, either as a
00:31:51damaged victim of his whims, or an
00:31:53independent spirit free of his control.
00:31:55Harley Quinn has earned a rabid
00:31:57fan following of her own, which
00:31:59is pretty wild, considering she was
00:32:01actually conceived for Batman the Animated
00:32:03Series, as opposed to debuting
00:32:05within the pages of a Batman comic.
00:32:07I ask you, Harley,
00:32:09who's given more hours of amusement
00:32:11to the Gotham police force
00:32:13than me?
00:32:15No one, Mr. J.
00:32:17Still, the feisty Quinn has captured the collective
00:32:19imagination of these fans as a
00:32:21total wild card that's dangerous as hell,
00:32:23but impossible to resist.
00:32:25What?
00:32:29Number 39,
00:32:31Gorilla Grodd.
00:32:43Number 38,
00:32:45Cobra Commander.
00:32:53Number 37, Red Skull.
00:33:01Number 36,
00:33:03Mr. Freeze.
00:33:17Number 35,
00:33:19The Shredder.
00:33:21There have been a lot of excellent villains throughout the
00:33:23extended universe of the Teenage Mutant Ninja
00:33:25Turtles. Sometimes, however,
00:33:27the most obvious answer also
00:33:29makes the best choice.
00:33:31Oroku Saki, aka The Shredder,
00:33:33will forever be linked to Splinter's
00:33:35sons as their primary antagonist.
00:33:49He's written with compelling history
00:33:51and motivation, while The Shredder's visual
00:33:53design is beyond cool.
00:33:55His martial arts skills are
00:33:57deadly, and his desire for vengeance
00:33:59is unstoppable. But Shredder
00:34:01can also be remarkably composed
00:34:03when it comes to seeing his plans carried
00:34:05out.
00:34:13He's also endured through comic book,
00:34:15television, and silver screen adaptations
00:34:17to become a supervillain that's easily
00:34:19recognizable for even the most casual
00:34:21TMNT fan.
00:34:27This is your family.
00:34:29I
00:34:31am your father.
00:34:37No.
00:34:39Kneel before son.
00:34:43Dormammu, I've come
00:34:45to bargain.
00:34:47You've come to die.
00:34:49Your world
00:34:51is now mine.
00:34:53You
00:34:55gave me that. I gave you nothing.
00:34:57You showed me what was possible.
00:34:59You showed me all it
00:35:01takes is fear and
00:35:03a little focused violence.
00:35:07No, no, no.
00:35:09No God.
00:35:13The only man in the sky
00:35:15is me.
00:35:19We live in an age where
00:35:21even the cheesiest characters from comic
00:35:23media's earliest recorded histories
00:35:25can be reappraised and given a fresh
00:35:27coat of creative paint.
00:35:29I'll win this election by hook
00:35:31or by crook. At least you have
00:35:33choices, Pingy. If you don't have a
00:35:35board of electors, you can't count the votes.
00:35:37And if you can't count the votes,
00:35:39you can't announce a winner.
00:35:41The HBO series The Penguin
00:35:43and its parent film The Batman from 2022
00:35:45grounded this gangster in reality
00:35:47as a ruthless, Tony Soprano
00:35:49styled crime lore.
00:36:01This was a far cry
00:36:03from both Burgess Meredith's campy
00:36:05Batman 66 portrayal and
00:36:07Danny DeVito's macabre and monstrous
00:36:09take from Batman Returns.
00:36:11What remains constant is that The Penguin
00:36:13is just interesting.
00:36:15His motivations for either money, love,
00:36:17or respect feel grounded in the crime
00:36:19alleys and noir storylines
00:36:21of the Batman universe. And
00:36:23we just can't help but watch.
00:36:35Number 29, Prometheus.
00:36:37In comics, nobody is a better
00:36:39example of a one man army than
00:36:41Prometheus. In many ways,
00:36:43he's like Batman, only he doesn't
00:36:45use his ability for the greater good.
00:36:47This skilled strategist is able to adapt
00:36:49to virtually anything and
00:36:51anyone thanks to his cool toys.
00:36:53With his special helmet, he can learn
00:36:55any fighting style instantaneously.
00:36:57And with his ghost zone key,
00:36:59he can teleport. These kinds of gizmos
00:37:01have helped him single handedly take
00:37:03down the Justice League. Yeah, that's
00:37:05right, Prometheus has gotten
00:37:07a one up on some of the greatest heroes
00:37:09of them all. If he can nearly defeat
00:37:11the Justice League all by himself,
00:37:13then he definitely deserves some respect
00:37:15on his name.
00:37:29Number 28, Mysterio.
00:37:31You can never trust what you see
00:37:33when Mysterio is around.
00:37:35You don't want any part of this.
00:37:37The Spider-Man
00:37:39villain's mastery of VFX
00:37:41makes him a dangerous threat who can twist
00:37:43reality on a whim. Okay, maybe
00:37:45he doesn't actually twist it,
00:37:47but when his tricks look that real,
00:37:49it's practically the next best thing.
00:37:51Besides his extreme knowledge of
00:37:53special effects, Quentin Beck has also
00:37:55dabbled a little bit in chemistry.
00:37:57That extracurricular activity has
00:37:59allowed him to make substances that can weaken
00:38:01Spider-Man's web and even his
00:38:03spider senses. Besides the comics,
00:38:05he also pretty much ruined Peter's
00:38:07life in the MCU when he outed his
00:38:09secret identity to the whole world.
00:38:11Sure, the fishbowl helmet might
00:38:13make him look silly, but ultimately,
00:38:15he's no laughing matter.
00:38:21Number 27, Deathstroke.
00:38:23Slade Wilson is one of the most feared
00:38:25villains in the DC Universe, and for
00:38:27good reason.
00:38:29He's
00:38:37easily one of the most skilled assassins
00:38:39around, and that line of work isn't
00:38:41easy since superpowers exist.
00:38:43When he's not hunting down people for money,
00:38:45he's also battling heroes like
00:38:47Batman, Green Arrow, the Teen Titans,
00:38:49and more. We really can't
00:38:51understate just how wicked he is.
00:38:53Sure, he's cool like he
00:38:55once had a sword that could kill gods,
00:38:57but he's also completely rotten
00:38:59to the core. He manipulated terror
00:39:01in a truly heinous way, hijacked
00:39:03the Speed Force, and even battled
00:39:05his own kids. He's sometimes
00:39:07told the line to morality,
00:39:09but when it comes down to it, Deathstroke's
00:39:11a villain plain and simple.
00:39:23Number 26, Mystique.
00:39:25Looks can be deceiving, and that's
00:39:27never been more true than with Mystique.
00:39:36The mischievous mutant can fool
00:39:38anyone by changing her physical appearance.
00:39:40It's a trick that proves useful on
00:39:42more than one occasion. That's
00:39:44not all, though. Mystique is also
00:39:46a highly skilled combatant who's
00:39:48unafraid to step into the heart of the battle.
00:39:50While she's experienced a shift
00:39:52to good in recent years, it's
00:39:54hard to ignore the villainous threat
00:39:56she's been. Like, she was once the
00:39:58leader of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
00:40:00No matter which way you look at it,
00:40:02that's some very specific branding,
00:40:04and it's pretty hard to distance yourself
00:40:06from something as extreme as that.
00:40:16Number 25, Scarecrow.
00:40:18Psychologist Jonathan Crane uses his
00:40:20extensive knowledge of the human mind
00:40:22like it's a weapon, manipulating people
00:40:24however he see fits.
00:40:30Though he can
00:40:32play people like a fiddle, he primarily
00:40:34relies on his fear toxin to do the trick.
00:40:36When exposed, the gas forces
00:40:38people to hallucinate their worst fears.
00:40:40If you think about it, this
00:40:42unique brand of villainy makes
00:40:44Scarecrow a perfect foil for Batman.
00:40:46Because if Batman's persona is
00:40:48all about instilling fear in criminals,
00:40:50what happens when he faces a villain
00:40:52whose chemicals can terrify
00:40:54even him? He can turn even
00:40:56the toughest of men into weeping little
00:40:58children. Plus, if his toxin
00:41:00wasn't haunting enough, his unsettling
00:41:02design will scare you too.
00:41:04This guy is the master of
00:41:06fear for a reason.
00:41:12Number 24, Ultron.
00:41:14The looming threat of artificial intelligence
00:41:16and the dangers it can pose for the
00:41:18world are more relevant than ever
00:41:20before.
00:41:30And in the Marvel
00:41:32Universe, the most powerful AI
00:41:34of them all is Ultron.
00:41:36Created by Hank Pym to be a force of good,
00:41:38he quickly went against his original
00:41:40programming. That's hardly new
00:41:42ground for these type of evil robots.
00:41:44But remember, Ultron is an
00:41:46evil AI in a world filled with
00:41:48superheroes. Meaning that his beef
00:41:50isn't just with humans. It's with
00:41:52everyone, including the Avengers
00:41:54themselves. He's become a vengeful
00:41:56maniac who has repeatedly slain
00:41:58countless innocent people in
00:42:00his bloodthirsty quest to extinguish
00:42:02humankind. So yeah, he's
00:42:04far more than just a ticked off
00:42:06chatbot.
00:42:08Settle. God throws a
00:42:10stone at it. And believe me,
00:42:12he's winding up.
00:42:14Number 23, Reverse Flash.
00:42:16This might sound controversial, but
00:42:18we're going to say it anyway.
00:42:20Reverse Flash might be the greatest
00:42:22hater in all of fiction.
00:42:24Why did you kill my mother?
00:42:26Because I hate you.
00:42:28Not you now. You years from now.
00:42:30In the future. In a future,
00:42:32yes. Eobard Thawne has manipulated
00:42:34all of time just so he can ruin
00:42:36Barry Allen's life over and
00:42:38over. His most diabolical
00:42:40schemes include murdering Barry's
00:42:42mother Nora and his girlfriend
00:42:44Irene. Even Thawne's own
00:42:46family isn't safe, considering he
00:42:48wiped his brother Robert out from existence
00:42:50too. He also broke into the
00:42:52Batcave and tore apart a letter from
00:42:54Batman's father as an additional
00:42:56F.U. His pettiness truly
00:42:58knows no limits, and he's too stubborn
00:43:00to die. Yes, you can
00:43:02kill him, but thanks to the negative speed
00:43:04force, he's always been able to
00:43:06come back. He's vicious,
00:43:08psychotic, and easily the
00:43:10Flash's greatest nemesis.
00:43:12Just so we're clear, after I
00:43:14kill you, I'm going to kill them,
00:43:16and then I'm going to kill your father.
00:43:18I always win.
00:43:20Fly! Number 22.
00:43:22Two-Face. The once promising
00:43:24Harvey Dent's facial disfigurement
00:43:26marked his fall from grace and cemented
00:43:28his role as a bad guy.
00:43:30I'm sorry, Harvey.
00:43:34No.
00:43:36No, you're not.
00:43:38Not yet.
00:43:40There's a real tragedy to Two-Face
00:43:42that makes him such a compelling Batman
00:43:44villain. He was once friends with Bruce
00:43:46Wayne, but everything changed
00:43:48for the worse. As Two-Face,
00:43:50he typically operates with a coin in
00:43:52one hand and a gun in the other.
00:43:54He's always looking to enact his own
00:43:56twisted sense of justice, and that
00:43:58puts him at odds with Batman.
00:44:00Harvey is a cunning, yet incredibly
00:44:02unstable foe. He's constantly
00:44:04teetering on the edge of sanity,
00:44:06and his unpredictability makes him
00:44:08someone you can never truly trust.
00:44:10Heck, with his fractured
00:44:12mental state, Two-Face can barely even
00:44:14trust himself. Fair enough.
00:44:20You first. Number 21.
00:44:22Bullseye. The world of comics
00:44:24isn't short on assassins, but even
00:44:26on a crowded playing field, this
00:44:28villain stands out. Not unlike
00:44:30the Joker, Bullseye's origin story
00:44:32is shrouded in mystery. He
00:44:34loves to keep those interested in
00:44:36the dark with conflicting accounts of his
00:44:38early life. And that's not
00:44:40all this Marvel villain shares in common with
00:44:42the Clown Prince of Crime. He's also
00:44:44a violent psychopath with a sadistic
00:44:46streak a mile wide.
00:44:48The arch-nemesis of Daredevil,
00:44:50Bullseye really left his mark on the medium
00:44:52and cemented his status as an iconic
00:44:54supervillain when he savagely killed
00:44:56Elektra with one of her own side,
00:44:58and then stuck around to watch
00:45:00Daredevil mourn. He lives to
00:45:02kill, but loves tormenting the
00:45:04man without fear. Number
00:45:0620. Galactus. The devourer
00:45:08of worlds. The
00:45:10connoisseur of the cosmos.
00:45:12The giant killer space dude.
00:45:14Galactus has gone by many
00:45:16names, but no matter what he's called,
00:45:18his reputation precedes him.
00:45:20Galactus.
00:45:26Amazing. The planet destroyer
00:45:28is literally and figuratively one of
00:45:30the biggest villains in the Marvel universe.
00:45:32But even though he's tried to
00:45:34conquer Earth and consume countless planets,
00:45:36some could argue that he's a necessary
00:45:38evil. That's a loaded debate
00:45:40for another day. What's not up for
00:45:42debate is that Galactus possesses
00:45:44sheer power that we can't comprehend.
00:45:46He's a pure force of nature,
00:45:48and we're not just saying that.
00:45:50When it's all said and done, Galactus
00:45:52will outlive us all.
00:45:54Oh boy, I think we just ticked him off.
00:46:00Number 19.
00:46:02Dark Phoenix. Many heroes have
00:46:04been manipulated, mind-controlled, or
00:46:06possessed by dark entities to make them turn
00:46:08evil at some point or another in their
00:46:10career. But it's usually
00:46:12short-lived. When Jean Grey was
00:46:14possessed by the Phoenix Force, however, she
00:46:16became an unstable villain with an awe-spiring,
00:46:18earth-shattering, and downright
00:46:20terrifying powers. And she
00:46:22remained that way for the duration of the
00:46:24landmark Phoenix saga, forever
00:46:26changing the face of the X-Men.
00:46:28In this supercharged, volatile state,
00:46:30Jean Grey was responsible for the death
00:46:32of billions when she consumed a star.
00:46:34Of course, at the very heart
00:46:36of the character's enduring appeal
00:46:38is the internal struggle between Jean Grey
00:46:40and the corrupting influence of the
00:46:42Phoenix Force. She's a villain, sure,
00:46:44but underneath lies a beloved
00:46:46hero. Number 18.
00:46:48Ozymandias. He's the man
00:46:50pulling the strings in arguably the greatest
00:46:52graphic novel of all time.
00:46:54What makes Adrian Veidt
00:46:56such a great villain is that he truly
00:46:58believes that what he is doing, he
00:47:00does for the greater good.
00:47:02Blessed with extremely high levels of
00:47:04intelligence, Ozymandias is known
00:47:06as the smartest man in the world in his
00:47:08reality. And unfortunately,
00:47:10this one-time hero clearly allowed
00:47:12that title to go to his head.
00:47:14He orchestrates the death of millions
00:47:16in the name of bringing about peace on Earth.
00:47:18There might be some utilitarian
00:47:20minded philosophers out there who
00:47:22would defend his actions, but anyone
00:47:24with a shred of humanity would
00:47:26agree that this not only makes him
00:47:28a villain, but one of the greats.
00:47:30Adrian, we know
00:47:32everything. Then what's there to discuss,
00:47:34Stan? Plenty.
00:47:36You killed Comedian.
00:47:38May he rest in peace.
00:47:40Number 17. Brainiac.
00:47:42When a hero is as powerful as the Man of
00:47:44Steel, their villains need to be
00:47:46similarly impressive. Thankfully,
00:47:48in Brainiac, Superman has found the
00:47:50foe worthy of decades worth
00:47:52of high-stakes conflict. Not
00:47:54unlike the Watchmen anti-villain, Mr.
00:47:56Veidt, Brainiac is cold and
00:47:58calculating. His hyper-advanced intellect
00:48:00making him wholly detached
00:48:02from the wants and needs of the beings
00:48:04he sees as inferior to himself.
00:48:06He has a thirst for knowledge, and he
00:48:08satisfies it by collecting civilizations
00:48:10in the form of shrunken cities.
00:48:12And as for the rest of the planet, they
00:48:14usually get destroyed. Why?
00:48:16Because knowledge is power, and Brainiac
00:48:18isn't interested in sharing his.
00:48:20Number 16. Sinestro.
00:48:22Once upon a time,
00:48:24Thou Sinestro of Korogar was
00:48:26considered the greatest Green Lantern to wear
00:48:28a power ring. The lack of criminal
00:48:30activity in his sector made him a
00:48:32hero and model to many, which is
00:48:34why he was charged with training new Lanterns
00:48:36including rookie Hal Jordan.
00:48:38And then it was discovered that Sinestro
00:48:40uses remarkable willpower to
00:48:42keep the peace on Korogar by authoritarian
00:48:44means. A trial
00:48:46and imprisonment followed, but from
00:48:48his disgrace, Sinestro was
00:48:50reborn, going on to found the
00:48:52Yellow Lanterns, who, in the place
00:48:54of will, derived their power from
00:48:56fear. He still seeks order
00:48:58and sees his actions as necessary
00:49:00for the greater good, but his methods
00:49:02are pure villainy.
00:49:04Number 15. Kingpin. The pages
00:49:06of Marvel and DC Comics aren't
00:49:08wanting for criminal masterminds.
00:49:10Get the chopper ready. I won't be long.
00:49:14But looking back over the history
00:49:16of the medium, and even taking into
00:49:18account the likes of Black Mask
00:49:20and the Penguin, Kingpin stands
00:49:22out as the cream of the crop. He's
00:49:24left his mark on not just Daredevil,
00:49:26but Spider-Man and the Punisher as
00:49:28well. If it's crime and it's happening
00:49:30in New York City, you can bet that
00:49:32Kingpin is getting his cut.
00:49:34And if he isn't, well, his
00:49:36goons will be coming to collect anyways,
00:49:38plus interest. What he lacks in
00:49:40superpowers, this villain makes up
00:49:42with his mastery of the criminal arts.
00:49:44Kingpin can outplay the best of
00:49:46them, and he knows how to take a punch.
00:49:48Number 14. Doctor
00:49:50Octopus. A character with a
00:49:52name, color scheme, and haircut
00:49:54like this guy should have zero
00:49:56chance of being this high on a
00:49:58list of the greatest supervillains of all
00:50:00time. But considering everything
00:50:02Doc Oc has working against them,
00:50:04that just makes his success and impact as a
00:50:06villain all the more impressive.
00:50:08The not-so-good Doctor is a scientist
00:50:10blessed with staggering intellect
00:50:12and a deep knowledge of various fields.
00:50:14It was he who formed the
00:50:16Sinister Six, and he who beat
00:50:18Spider-Man so badly in their first encounter
00:50:20that our hero considered walking away
00:50:22from crime fighting. He once nearly
00:50:24killed Black Cat, and also managed
00:50:26to take over Peter's body. But for
00:50:28all his evil acts, like the best
00:50:30villains, he continues to captivate.
00:50:38Number 13. Doomsday.
00:50:40Elaborate schemes and devious
00:50:42plots? Who needs them when
00:50:44you're an unstoppable killing machine?
00:50:49Just select
00:50:51your target and keep attacking until
00:50:53he finally lies down and dies.
00:50:55No one would ever call Doomsday
00:50:57a well-rounded or deep character.
00:50:59He's just about the worst conversationalist
00:51:01in comics. But when this Kryptonian
00:51:03monster single-handedly trounced
00:51:05the Justice League, he demanded the
00:51:07attention of readers. And when he
00:51:09then proceeded to kill the Man of Steel,
00:51:11he cemented his place in comic book
00:51:13history. Doomsday is a simple
00:51:15creature designed to be the perfect
00:51:17hunter. Nigh indestructible,
00:51:19full of rage, and existing
00:51:21purely to destroy, Doomsday
00:51:23is a monster through and through,
00:51:25and a villain without redemption.
00:51:27Number 12. Loki.
00:51:29With his involvement in the MCU, there's
00:51:31no denying that Loki has risen to
00:51:33great heights.
00:51:39And with his success, he's experienced
00:51:41a renewed popularity in the comics,
00:51:43getting far more love from the editors.
00:51:45Is he overrated? Well,
00:51:47his cinematic success has certainly skewed
00:51:49the perception of the general public.
00:51:51But considering his long and colorful
00:51:53comic book history, not to mention
00:51:55his villainous greatest hits, we feel
00:51:57he's earned his place here. The modern
00:51:59Marvel incarnation dates all
00:52:01the way back to 1962.
00:52:03And since then, this magical, shape-shifting
00:52:05god of mischief has more than done
00:52:07his title proud, even manipulating
00:52:09other villains to his own ends.
00:52:11In the comics, like in the movies,
00:52:13it was Loki's villainy that forced
00:52:15the Avengers to assemble.
00:52:17Number 11. Ra's al Ghul.
00:52:19Few villains commit acts of
00:52:21evil for evil's sake. Most
00:52:23find a way to rationalize their actions.
00:52:25But few villains are more resolutely
00:52:27confident in the good of their own
00:52:29actions than Ra's al Ghul is.
00:52:31An environmental terrorist, and
00:52:33so much more, Ra's al Ghul
00:52:35is one of the few villains in Batman's
00:52:37rogues gallery whom the Caped Crusader
00:52:39truly respects. In many
00:52:41ways, they are equals in two
00:52:43sides of the same coin, fighting for
00:52:45what they each believe to be right,
00:52:47just from very different perspectives.
00:52:49In fact, Ra's has repeatedly
00:52:51tried to make Bruce his successor.
00:52:53With his deadly league of assassins
00:52:55and the regenerative properties of the Lazarus
00:52:57pit extending his life, this
00:52:59brilliant villain is as enduring as
00:53:01he is compelling. Number
00:53:0310. Thanos. Considering his
00:53:05recent success on the big screen, this character
00:53:07requires little introduction.
00:53:09You should have gone for the
00:53:11head.
00:53:15And considering the massive space
00:53:17he currently occupies in the pop culture
00:53:19consciousness, some might be surprised
00:53:21that he didn't land higher on our list.
00:53:23But we're talking all time
00:53:25here, and so there's a lot of history
00:53:27to consider. And looking just
00:53:29at the comics, Thanos has indeed
00:53:31earned his spot. In the Infinity Gauntlet
00:53:33comic book event, Thanos similarly
00:53:35wipes out half of all life.
00:53:37But he didn't do it to save
00:53:39reality. He did it to impress the woman
00:53:41of his dreams, Mistress Death.
00:53:43Now, if that isn't villainy of
00:53:45epic proportions, we don't know
00:53:47what is. Number 9. Venom.
00:53:49Some of you will surely point
00:53:51out that Venom has evolved into an anti-hero
00:53:53over the years, if not an
00:53:55outright hero depending on who's wearing the
00:53:57symbiote. But when he first debuted,
00:53:59Venom was a thoroughly villainous force
00:54:01the likes of which Spider-Man had never
00:54:03faced before. He is physically formidable,
00:54:05shares some of Spidey's powers,
00:54:07and is absolutely terrifying
00:54:09to behold. And for anyone who feels
00:54:11that Venom lost his edge as an
00:54:13anti-heroic lethal protector,
00:54:15the sheer brutality of Venom during
00:54:17Mac Gargan's time wearing the symbiote
00:54:19more than solidifies his villain status.
00:54:21Number 8. Bane.
00:54:23A muscle-bound man who uses
00:54:25super steroids and wears a
00:54:27luchador mask, taken at face value,
00:54:29Bane has henchmen written
00:54:31all over him. But in his very
00:54:33first story arc, the character quickly
00:54:35establishes himself as arguably the
00:54:37single greatest threat that Batman
00:54:39had ever faced. A cunning
00:54:41strategist, brutal combatant, and natural
00:54:43leader, Bane broke Batman.
00:54:45First psychologically by
00:54:47overwhelming him with criminal activity
00:54:49after orchestrating a mass breakout
00:54:51from Arkham, and then physically
00:54:53when he broke Batman's back.
00:54:55He also managed to figure out Batman's secret
00:54:57identity with little effort, demonstrating
00:54:59the duct of reasoning rivaling that of
00:55:01Bruce Wayne's. Batman has
00:55:03mastered the fine art of beating the odds
00:55:05against overpowered villains. But
00:55:07Bane isn't just overpowered,
00:55:09he feels tailor-made to beat
00:55:11the Caped Crusader.
00:55:13Oh, you're funny!
00:55:15Number 7.
00:55:17Apocalypse. People often say
00:55:19that the X-Men play in their very own
00:55:21corner of the Marvel Universe. Sure,
00:55:23their ventures cross over with the more
00:55:25conventional Caped Crusaders, but
00:55:27they're more insular than most.
00:55:29And in the X-Men sphere, there are a few
00:55:31villains more formidable than the ancient
00:55:33mutant Apocalypse. An Sabanur
00:55:35was born in ancient Egypt,
00:55:37where the nomadic tribesmen who raised
00:55:39him instilled him to believe in the survival
00:55:41of the fittest. Flash forward thousands
00:55:43of years and numerous generations later,
00:55:45and Apocalypse is still being
00:55:47driven by the same values. In the
00:55:49modern age, he views mutants as
00:55:51the superior race, and he does not
00:55:53hesitate to call those he deems
00:55:55inferior, i.e. homo sapiens.
00:55:57Asleep, trapped
00:55:59in darkness.
00:56:01I was not there for you, my son,
00:56:03but I am here now.
00:56:05Number 6. Darkseid.
00:56:07We haven't seen much of him on the big
00:56:09screen, but Darkseid doesn't
00:56:11need to raise his profile. This
00:56:13villain has already earned his place in
00:56:15the pantheon of legendary comic
00:56:17book villains. For the uninitiated,
00:56:19however, easiest way to describe
00:56:21Darkseid is as the DC equivalent
00:56:23of Thanos. And for the record,
00:56:25Darkseid debuted a full
00:56:27two years earlier. Darkseid's thirst
00:56:29for power arguably outmatches
00:56:31all other villains in DC comics.
00:56:33He seeks to rule everything
00:56:35in existence, and unlike most
00:56:37characters with his caliber of powers and
00:56:39raw strength, he also has a mind
00:56:41to match. A god-like
00:56:43villain with an army at his back,
00:56:45Darkseid is the endgame for the Justice
00:56:47League. Number 5. Norman
00:56:49Osborn slash Green Goblin.
00:56:51This entry is made up of both this
00:56:53character's civilian persona and their
00:56:55villain alter ego.
00:57:03The reason? Because while it
00:57:05was the Green Goblin who originally cemented
00:57:07himself as Spider-Man's greatest foe,
00:57:09particularly after he killed Gwen Stacy,
00:57:11it's Norman Osborn who has
00:57:13more often plagued heroes in the
00:57:15years since. It's this historically
00:57:17duality that makes the character
00:57:19such a formidable villain. As Green
00:57:21Goblin, he is wild, violent,
00:57:23unpredictable, and more than a little
00:57:25unhinged. Norman Osborn,
00:57:27by contrast, is cold and calculating.
00:57:29In some ways, the two
00:57:31feel like the Joker and Lex Luthor
00:57:33wrapped into one. Over the years
00:57:35wielding his fortune and business acumen,
00:57:37he's also placed himself in
00:57:39various positions of power, with
00:57:41devastating results.
00:57:43Number 4. Doctor Doom.
00:57:45There are few villains who inspire
00:57:47fear and respect like Victor Von Doom.
00:57:49Though, he is first
00:57:51and foremost the arch-nemesis of
00:57:53the Fantastic Four. The man in the
00:57:55iconic mask is a world-class
00:57:57villain. He rules Latveria with an
00:57:59iron fist, but his kingdom is
00:58:01allegedly freed from not only crime
00:58:03but poverty and illness as well.
00:58:05He's a megalomaniac, sure,
00:58:07but he's not without honor and has
00:58:09even been known to play the hero under the
00:58:11right circumstances. Doom might
00:58:13suffer from the same alter ego problems as
00:58:15many of his peers, but unlike
00:58:17most, this brilliant polymath
00:58:19actually lives up to his own lofty
00:58:21self-image. He also once
00:58:23reshaped reality as he saw fit.
00:58:25Number 3. Magneto.
00:58:27There are those who will be sorely disappointed
00:58:29that the master of magnetism
00:58:31lands in this spot. And for
00:58:33the record, it was an incredibly tight
00:58:35race.
00:58:47Max Eisenhardt, also known as
00:58:49Eric Magnus Lenscher, knows
00:58:51first-hand the atrocities that humankind
00:58:53is capable of when driven by
00:58:55hatred and fear. He is a survivor
00:58:57of the Holocaust. In his zealousness
00:58:59to protect mutantkind from those who
00:59:01will harm them, however, his methods have
00:59:03seen him commit horrible acts of his own.
00:59:05Magneto refuses the nil.
00:59:07He is powerful both in terms of mutant
00:59:09abilities and as leader. And we
00:59:11never tire of the moral dilemmas
00:59:13he's presented over the decades.
00:59:15Number 2. Lex Luthor.
00:59:17It's remarkable. Superman
00:59:19is a living god. And he has tangled
00:59:21with numerous similarly overpowered
00:59:23villains over the years. And yet
00:59:25his greatest foe remains a
00:59:27mortal man. Armed with nothing but his
00:59:29intelligence, business sense, political
00:59:31clout, and yes, on occasion,
00:59:33a wicked awesome war suit,
00:59:35Luthor proves that there's
00:59:37nothing more dangerous than a human
00:59:39with a grudge. Lex is a
00:59:41self-made man. And it's his personal
00:59:43mission to unmake Superman, which
00:59:45he's come close to doing on many
00:59:47occasions. Though heroes
00:59:49know his villainous heart, his philanthropic
00:59:51ways have earned him the trust of the
00:59:53masses. And this makes him twice
00:59:55as dangerous. Before we continue,

01:00:11Number one,
01:00:13Joker. According to
01:00:15co-creator Jerry Robinson, the
01:00:17Joker was designed to be an enduring
01:00:19arch-nemesis for the Caped Crusader,
01:00:21a larger-than-life Moriarty to their
01:00:23costume Sherlock Holmes. Of
01:00:25course, the accounts of Joker's
01:00:27creation are as conflicting as his
01:00:29in-universe origin. Some claim
01:00:31he was supposed to die at the end of his
01:00:33introductory arc. Regardless,
01:00:35debuting in Batman number one,
01:00:37the Joker would grow and evolve into a
01:00:39massive pop culture icon. Unlike
01:00:41most villains, Joker's worth can't
01:00:43be measured in bodies, except
01:00:45maybe a Batman's sidekicks.
01:00:47What makes him so compelling is
01:00:49his uniquely disturbed mind.
01:00:51He is chaos incarnate,
01:00:53an evil doer who defies convention
01:00:55by showing disinterest in power
01:00:57or money. He's undoubtedly a monster,
01:00:59but one whose thoroughly human
01:01:01perversions never get old.
01:01:03Ta-da!
01:01:05It's...
01:01:07It's gone.
