00:00Anyway, in conclusion, me and Vice President Harris are the same.
00:03Oh, okay, ha ha, great stuff. Thank you, Joe. Thank you so much.
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the boldest,
00:11most critical, and or insulting impressions in SNL history.
00:14First, we're gonna throw out bogus mail-in ballots,
00:18calling these ballots they could be coming from Mars.
00:22Great.
00:24Number 30. Nicolas Cage by Andy Samberg.
00:27The hairline isn't the only notable element of this impression.
00:31Andy Samberg takes on Nicolas Cage's personality, acting, and intensity.
00:35Let's begin. Now, you're currently in the film Sherlock Holmes' Game of Shadows,
00:42which I am told involves explosions, screaming,
00:45and an evil genius hell-bent on destroying the world.
00:48That's right, I am.
00:49So my first question is, how am I not in that movie?
00:53For a series of weekend update segments,
00:56Samberg doesn't worry about offending the actor either.
00:59He plays with Cage's tendency to go over the top and beyond with his acting choices.
01:04This character bounces off other Hollywood stars playing themselves,
01:07from Jude Law to Liam Neeson.
01:09Wow, that, that sounds really good.
01:12Don't condescend me, Tal Bono!
01:16The real actor even appears in one variation,
01:19looking to defend himself and play with his own persona.
01:22Both performers end up turning this concept into a meta-commentary.
01:26For example, this Nick is calm and stealthy like a ninja warrior,
01:31whereas this Nick is an exaggerated screaming psychopath who really just doesn't exist.
01:40Each appearance makes for both laughs and surprises,
01:43fitting for an actor who always keeps his guessing.
01:46Number 29, Kamala Harris by Maya Rudolph.
01:49Since the 2020 election season,
01:52Maya Rudolph has been playing this Kamala Harris on SNL.
01:55She's also been perfecting her skills with some fantastic performances.
01:59Senator Harris, would you like to respond?
02:02Tulsi, I'm gonna be real with you, all right?
02:05You scare the hell out of me.
02:08You just gave me, oh my God, goosebumps.
02:11These include some accurate details like Harris's delivery and vocals.
02:14Rudolph turns debates into hilarious affairs,
02:18making the future VP into someone trying hard to be cool.
02:20Excuse me, no, no, Joe,
02:22there have been two black women elected to the Senate,
02:26and that second black woman, it me.
02:36She returned to play the leader in 2024,
02:39for parodies of her personal and political connections.
02:41This included some fantastic chemistry with Andy Samberg as her husband, Doug Emhoff.
02:46Hey, the polls are looking great,
02:48and I may have accidentally Googled myself too.
02:51Turns out some people are calling me a grilf,
02:54which means golden retriever, I'd like to French.
02:56Huh, I'm pretty sure that's wrong.
02:59Yeah, it's probably wrong.
03:00The peak of this impression is arguably playing opposite the real Harris,
03:04poking fun at her distinct laugh.
03:06I don't really laugh like that, do I?
03:09Oh, a little bit.
03:15In less than a minute,
03:16Fred Armisen makes a major splash as the frontman for Radiohead.
03:20He plays Tom York in a disastrous duet with Michael Bublé.
03:24Silent, silent, silent, silent,
03:28Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy,
03:35holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy.
03:36Armisen doesn't do this in a straightforward way either,
03:39letting his impersonation take a more crazed direction.
03:42This includes the comedian playing the singer as more erratic and indecipherable.
03:46York's beautiful falsettos don't make an appearance here,
03:49but Armisen's physical comedy certainly does.
03:56It's not necessarily the kindest way to salute an acclaimed artist either.
04:00This energetic performance is hilarious,
04:03and one of the underrated parts of this funny sketch.
04:10While she might not seem like an obvious target,
04:12Jennifer Lawrence becomes a great comic character in the Celebrity Family Feud sketch.
04:22Ariana Grande once again shows her versatile talents as she becomes the Oscar-winning performer.
04:27The singer is able to capture and poke fun at Lawrence's personality,
04:30with some help from Kenan Thompson as Steve Harvey,
04:33the script takes aim at Lawrence as being too relatable for her own good.
04:51It's all in good fun, but the sketch does take the subject down a few notches.
04:55Grande's performance is also something to behold as she finds subtle details to use.
05:04Pete Davidson isn't necessarily known for his impressions,
05:07but this one is a definite standout.
05:14He manages to tap into Rami Malek's unique presence.
05:17This includes the actor's dramatic stare,
05:20which lets Davidson give a minimal performance.
05:23It makes the Oscar winner seem much creepier than he might be in real life.
05:27While this paints the target as unsettling,
05:29it also pokes fun at the subject's intensity.
05:31You can't help but laugh as the performer speaks in monotone and tries not to blink.
05:36During Malek's episode, the Bohemian Rhapsody star finally got his revenge
05:40while also displaying his great comedic timing.
05:53In terms of makeup and hairstyle alone,
05:56this easily stands as one of the most unflattering SNL impressions.
06:00Kate McKinnon then opens her mouth to play Rudy Giuliani as something more sinister.
06:09The cast member doesn't mind using her hands,
06:12contorting herself to become a little more feminine.
06:15She's also a great actress,
06:16and it's not surprising that she has a lot of talent in her own right.
06:22McKinnon has also become something close to a Lord of the Rings character.
06:36It's such an impressive transformation that you might laugh and or look away in horror.
06:41At first, McKinnon might seem like an unlikely candidate to impersonate the former mayor,
06:46but the way she loses herself in the role is incredible.
06:50pushes the role into more embarrassing and unsightly territory.
07:13On Weekend Update,
07:15Cecily Strong appeared as the conservative personality Janine Pirro,
07:18who always seems to be riled up about something.
07:33Not only does she sensationalize everything,
07:36she usually carries a drink with her.
07:38Strong doesn't hesitate to give this version of Pirro a problem handling her liquor.
07:43However, she doesn't drink it so much as she tosses it everywhere.
07:47Colin Jost often becomes the target of these spills,
07:49making for some fantastic physical comedy.
07:52The cast member turns this TV star into a hysterical spectacle.
07:56It's a shame that the actual person doesn't enter tanks of booze,
07:59singing her heart out to My Way.
08:12Decades after leaving the show,
08:13Dana Carvey returned to play Joe Biden.
08:16He once again showed his knack for political impressions.
08:26His take on the president involves catchphrases,
08:28rambling,
08:29and some incoherent statements.
08:31Needless to say,
08:32the politician might not be calling to thank Carvey anytime soon.
08:46The comedian does look like he's having fun as he turns Biden into a cartoon.
08:51Forgetful and bumbling,
08:52this version of the man makes for some wild speeches.
08:55His work next to Maya Rudolph's Kamala Harris
08:58helps to sell just how good this impersonation is.
09:10The former cast member never misses a beat,
09:12showing that he can still be as silly as possible.
09:16Oh, come on, man.
09:17It's my own version of The Weave.
09:19I call it The Wander.
09:20I go here.
09:22Or I go there.
09:23Or I come back.
09:24Guess what?
09:25No.
09:31You might not remember this governor of New York,
09:33but you might recall Fred Armisen's impression.
09:36The comedian pokes fun at David Patterson's vision
09:38in some off-the-wall segments.
09:41Hello, Yankee Stadium!
09:45His character slides into frame,
09:47struggling to find his way,
09:48and even using binoculars at one point.
09:50He's even known to step in front of the camera.
09:53It might not be politically correct,
09:55but it does make for some amusing surprises.
09:57This Patterson also loves to make jokes
09:59at the expense of his neighbor state, New Jersey.
10:01I am hopeful because I know that the worst is behind us.
10:05And you know how you can tell that the worst is behind you, Seth?
10:08How?
10:09You see a sign that says,
10:10you are now leaving New Jersey.
10:13Armisen really goes for it,
10:15fearless in his quest to tread the line
10:17between humor and bad taste.
10:19You know, working in Albany is a lot like
10:21watching Saturday Night Live.
10:22There's a lot of characters,
10:24it's funny for 10 minutes,
10:25and then you just want it to go away.
10:31During the early years of SNL,
10:33the president was Gerald Ford.
10:35Chevy Chase did not look like the man
10:37or alter his look in any way.
10:39My fellow Americans,
10:42ladies and gentlemen,
10:43members of the press,
10:45and my immediate family.
10:48First, may I thank you all for being here.
10:50And I am and my immediate family.
10:52He chose to make the politician clumsy,
10:54taking comical missteps and even a few pratfalls.
10:57His debate work alongside Dan Aykroyd's Jimmy Carter
11:00features plenty of wrong answers.
11:02We will begin with our national anthem.
11:08I can name that tune in four notes.
11:10If you only got your news from SNL,
11:13you'd think that Ford fell in every public appearance.
11:16Chase put his body on the line
11:17to make this impersonation special.
11:19The cast member treated audiences with hilarious gags,
11:22making the character as inept as possible.
11:25My stand on the Ronald Reagan announcement.
11:30Hello.
11:31Number 20, Burt Reynolds by Norm Macdonald.
11:36Norm Macdonald can make us laugh by doing just about anything,
11:39but his Burt Reynolds impression is particularly legendary.
11:42Burt, can you please pick a category?
11:45Pick, pick shorts.
11:48Yeah, sure, give me shorts.
11:50It's S words.
11:51It's S words.
11:54And for how much, Mr. Reynolds?
11:56Ah, hell, let's go nuts.
11:57Shorts for 48,000.
11:58Macdonald lampooned Reynolds.
12:00Or should we say Turd Ferguson,
12:02in the first ever iteration of the Celebrity Jeopardy series on SNL,
12:06and returned as the character eight times throughout the show's run.
12:09Hey, check out the podium.
12:10Look at this.
12:11Mr. Reynolds has apparently changed his name to Turd Ferguson.
12:17Yeah, that's right.
12:18Turd Ferguson, it's a funny name.
12:19He played him as an over-the-top cool guy with not so much in the noggin,
12:23who gets a kick out of his own half-witted quips.
12:26It's hard to say that this portrayal is accurate to the actor's real-life intelligence,
12:30but it became an iconic impression nevertheless.
12:33Mr. Reynolds.
12:34Yeah, don't bother.
12:34I didn't write anything.
12:35Good work.
12:36Number 19.
12:37Kendall Jenner by Gal Gadot.
12:39In a spoof of the E lineup,
12:41this sketch takes a look at potential spin-offs for shows like Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
12:46These include one for Kendall Jenner with an entertaining impression from Gal Gadot.
12:50I'm under a lot of pressure.
12:52So much pressure.
12:53You're prettier than me.
12:55No way.
12:56You're so much prettier than me.
12:58Wait, which one am I?
13:01The Wonder Woman star portrays the model as clueless,
13:04remaining in a constant state of confusion about her life.
13:07Gadot also appears in another hilarious show about Jenner trying to find her way around a house.
13:13The house is so big and empty and she's only there two weeks out of the year.
13:16Is this the bathroom?
13:19Damn, closet again.
13:21With off-the-wall concepts,
13:22the writers explore the character through the stereotype of a shallow celebrity.
13:26Whether or not you think it's accurate,
13:28you'll probably laugh as you watch the performer get completely lost in the role.
13:32Number 18.
13:33Brett Kavanaugh by Matt Damon.
13:35For this cold open,
13:37the show called in a movie star to channel the energy of Brett Kavanaugh.
13:40Matt Damon's take on the Supreme Court justice starts in a loud and hilarious way.
13:45Oh, hell yeah.
13:48Let me tell you this.
13:49I'm gonna start at an 11.
13:53I'm gonna take it to about a 15 real quick.
13:56Referencing the man's apparent love of beer,
13:58Damon turns his target into a frat boy with a harsh tone.
14:01He also brings out real references to the hearing that include props like a calendar.
14:06Riding an emotional roller coaster,
14:08the Oscar winner takes the impression through screams and even some crying spells.
14:12Look at my calendar.
14:15And you're gonna see that every night,
14:19I was lifting weights with PJ and squeeze.
14:22It might even be accurate in places,
14:24but ultimately it becomes an enjoyable caricature.
14:27Number 17.
14:29Kathie Lee Gifford by Kristen Wiig.
14:31If you were to believe this impression of the Today Show host,
14:34you'd think she was drinking all the time.
14:36Kristen Wiig's hilarious take on Kathie Lee Gifford is heavy on the wine in a cartoonish way.
14:41I'm Kathie Lee Gifford and I am like so not a puzzle.
14:50And I'm Hoda Kotb.
14:51Hoda Kotb, I'm never gonna get past that weird name.
14:55What? It's weird.
14:57Lovable and clumsy,
14:58this version of the presenter feels like a fantastic train wreck.
15:01This imitation of Gifford slurs her words and constantly questions her actions,
15:06making faces along the way.
15:08Wiig's lighthearted jabs at the TV personality make her an unfiltered mess.
15:12Potent potables? I'm sorry, I don't know what that is.
15:14It's about alcohol.
15:16In that case, I'll take potent potables.
15:21For how much?
15:23How about a glass full, right?
15:25It's not exactly flattering,
15:27but it is a clear example of the SNL star's power as a comedian.
15:35Back during his time as the vice president,
15:37Joe Biden was impersonated on SNL by Jason Sudeikis.
15:40The actor's take on the politician was of a slightly confused man with prominent teeth.
15:45Large and in charge, the president's away and Joe will play.
15:49He also leans into the VP's more embarrassing side,
15:52talking without a filter most of the time.
15:54Sudeikis also references the fact that most people in Biden's previous position are forgotten.
15:59There's also his frequent mentioning of Scranton,
16:02just one of the ways the character uses to try and connect with the general public.
16:06It's just a corrupt, barren, backwater hellhole of a place.
16:10I mean, it's worse than Scranton.
16:12Ultimately, the show chose to portray the leader
16:14as an uncle who can't always state his message well.
16:17Jim Carrey would later capitalize on this idea,
16:20taking the impression on the 2020 campaign trail.
16:33For the 2016 campaign season,
16:35Kate McKinnon brought out a killer Hillary Clinton impersonation.
16:42The caricature delves into the politician's attempts to connect with the youth vote.
16:55This includes campaign announcements and advertisements,
16:58most of which give off an awkward mom energy.
17:01There are also debates against the likes of Alec Baldwin's Trump
17:04that devolve into rants from McKinnon's Clinton.
17:12The performer always knocks it out of the park with excellent comic timing.
17:20Whether she's about to freak out or trying desperately to hold it together,
17:24this take on the former Secretary of State is obsessed with winning the presidency.
17:32For those that love Dan Aykroyd,
17:34they might not have originally envisioned him as Julia Child.
17:37The performer provides a funny spoof of the chef's cooking show.
17:42I'm Julia Child.
17:45Today we're going to make a holiday feast or
17:48Le Feuille d'Olive and we're going to start with half bone chicken.
17:52Instead of showing her as a cooking expert,
17:54Aykroyd plays her as a clumsy TV personality.
17:57He puts on a wig and a dress,
17:59creating an outrageous take on Child's voice.
18:01The best part of the interpretation comes when a knife chops part of the host's hand.
18:06Now I've done it, I've cut the dickens out of my finger.
18:08Well, I'm glad in a way this happened.
18:11With blood flying everywhere,
18:13the comedian has no fear of making his real-life counterpart look crazy.
18:17This doesn't stop the sketch either,
18:19as the SNL legend brings some physical comedy to this impression.
18:26Dana Carvey's expertise with impressions gives this take on Ross Perot a memorable quality.
18:32He definitely nails the voice,
18:33while also turning up the dial on the presidential candidate's unique mannerisms.
18:37Now I want to focus on the issues in this campaign,
18:39but seems these people in the press want to focus on my business practices,
18:42or some fella I might have fired,
18:44or my physical appearance, my ears.
18:46The character can turn any campaign speech into a one-man show with wild proposals and metaphors.
18:51In any situation,
18:53this version of Perot provides hilarious observations about anything and everything.
18:57He even appears in a Halloween sketch where he criticizes kids in their costumes,
19:02showing that there's absolutely no barrier between what he thinks and what he says.
19:09Carvey once again proves that an exaggerated accent and even some dancing go a long way.
19:27In the first several seasons of the show,
19:29Gilda Radner impersonated legendary interviewer Barbara Walters.
19:33Well, technically she's called Baba Wawa,
19:35but we all know who she's parodying.
19:40And welcome to Baba Wawa at large.
19:43We are indeed walky to have as our guest tonight.
19:45This version of the presenter makes for an over-the-top and enjoyable experience every time.
19:50Radner gives Walters a unique way of pronouncing certain consonants,
19:54making every interview segment extra interesting.
19:56This comes out with interviewees that range from Henry Kissinger to Marlena Dietrich.
20:01Tell us your secret of perpetual youth.
20:04I get massaged regularly,
20:06and I have had everything wefted.
20:11You mean you've had your wigs wefted?
20:13Everything.
20:13The SNL cast member wears a smile through every sketch as she plays the journalist like a cartoon.
20:19You could call it more of a mean caricature,
20:22but it's such an exaggerated character that you have to laugh.
20:28Arguably one of the most versatile performers in SNL history,
20:32there is nothing Phil Hartman couldn't do.
20:34We simply must draw the line somewhere.
20:36We cannot pay for everything.
20:39For example, cooties are covered, but not the heebie-jeebies.
20:44His run as Bill Clinton in the 1990s is full of gems that are still quoted today,
20:49spoofing the president's relationship with his wife.
20:51Hartman's performance exaggerates the Bill and Hillary dynamic with comedic results.
20:55Is that about it?
20:57So far, yeah.
20:59Oh boy.
21:00He's able to use the politician's charisma and use it against people like in the famous McDonald's sketch.
21:06This version of Clinton loves fast food and slick speeches that seem to be all jumbled together.
21:11The comedian utilizes all of the best cliches about politics,
21:14giving this interpretation an inflated ego and a speech for any occasion.
21:22Yes, this impersonation is savage,
21:25but McKinnon's self-professed method behind pulling off the perfect Justin Bieber impression
21:29isn't exactly a compliment to the singer either.
21:37Both the physicality of the role and the dialogue are hilarious to watch,
21:41as McKinnon nails the young pop star's cockiness with pouts and poses
21:45while perfectly undercutting that image with some particularly childish lines and actions.
21:59It might be an exaggerated impression,
22:03but it's absolutely without fault from a comedic standpoint,
22:07proving once again that McKinnon's comedy skills know no bounds.
22:20All eyes turned to SNL when we learned of Kanye's meeting with the 45th president,
22:24and boy did they deliver.
22:29Chris Redd had big shoes to fill in taking over this role from Jay Pharoah,
22:35and he did not disappoint. His impression is uncanny,
22:38perfectly capturing everything from Kanye's intonation and mannerisms
22:42to the unpredictability of what he might say or do next.
22:54SNL didn't have to look too far for inspiration for this sketch either,
22:57as the material pretty much writes itself. However,
23:00Redd's hilarious impression just reminds us that a chat with Ye can be a tad surreal.
23:09SNL may have been ruthless with their Kellyanne Conway impression,
23:12but there's no denying it got people talking.
23:14Kellyanne has the tiresome job of excusing all of President Donald Trump's outrageous behavior,
23:30and McKinnon does an impeccable job of dodging questions
23:33and inventing her own narrative as Conway often seems to do.
23:37Audiences have seen the job take its toll on McKinnon's Kellyanne over the last few years,
23:41culminating in a Fatal Attraction-style sketch that some claim went a step too far.
23:51But if anyone sums up the media madness surrounding the Trump administration,
23:55it's Kellyanne Conway, and McKinnon has her down to a tee.
24:00Okay, so Puerto Rico actually was worse before Hurricane Maria,
24:04and the hurricane actually did blow some buildings back together,
24:06and I don't know why Elizabeth Warren won't tweet about that.
24:12This one has a weird premise, with Will Ferrell playing the former
24:16Attorney General hosting a teen dance show in her basement.
24:24Ferrell plays her as a powerful force to be reckoned with,
24:27highlighting her strongest assets and personality traits.
24:37Even surrounded by dancing teens, this Reno doesn't let up from her role as Attorney General,
24:43and her special guests only add to the hilarity.
24:45Maybe having Will Ferrell prance around in a dress,
24:48dancing awkwardly and emphasizing a manly quality isn't the most respectful way to portray her,
24:53but she reportedly took it well, even becoming a fan.
24:57When Monica Lewinsky made headlines in the 90s,
25:09SNL decided to turn away from the obvious Lolita parody,
25:12and instead present us with an immature young lady,
25:14who simply got caught up in the whirlwind of politics.
25:17Not only does Molly Shannon's portrayal of her often collapse into nervous giggling,
25:28she also comes across as self-centered, attention-seeking,
25:32and not particularly concerned with the consequences.
25:39It was a pretty unforgiving impression at the time,
25:41and it hasn't aged gracefully, making it even more brutal in hindsight.
25:48It was almost a shame when Sean Spicer left the White House,
25:53as it brought an end to Melissa McCarthy's hilariously brutish impression.
26:04The president reportedly didn't like a woman playing a man in his administration,
26:08which egged SNL on into bringing us Kate McKinnon's unforgettable
26:12impression of ex-Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
26:18However, McCarthy's Spicer takes the spot on our list for her loud,
26:24angry, and boisterous impression, and constant willingness to wage war with the media.
26:29While Spicer took it well, he also thought McCarthy could tone it down a notch.
26:37Celebrity Jeopardy! is one of Saturday Night Live's most beloved sketches,
26:41and Daryl Hammond's unforgettable performance as Scottish actor Sean Connery
26:44played a huge role in cementing its place both in SNL history and our hearts.
26:57For some reason, Hammond's Connery is crude, brutish, antagonistic,
27:02and like all of his opponents, somewhat dim-witted.
27:05One's a sick duck. I can't remember how it ends, but your mother's a whore.
27:11He deliberately mispronounces phrases and always has a
27:14your-mom joke on hand for disapproving Alex Trebek, played by Will Ferrell.
27:19We're not sure what Connery did to deserve this,
27:21as the impression is far from flattering, but we wouldn't have it any other way.
27:25I'll take whore-age for 200.
27:38With one of the most impressive performances in recent SNL history,
27:42James Austin Johnson has been knocking it out of the park as Donald Trump.
27:46His vocal inflections and rambling feel almost too accurate at times,
27:50while still being completely silly.
27:55Doing to me is worse than any crime I've ever committed, and I've committed a lot.
28:01Close to 34.
28:03It's so precise in those aspects that the over-the-top dialogue
28:06almost sounds like actual transcripts.
28:08Johnson goes on rant about everything from politics to pop culture,
28:12throwing out opinions about celebrities that are especially hilarious.
28:15Speaking of new rules, Dua Lipa is one of our best singers.
28:19And frankly, in terms of singer, you can't do better than Dua Lipa.
28:22The show knows how to tackle the former president's cadence,
28:25while still leaving room for this performer to unleash so many crazy lines.
28:30This interpretation feels like the perfect mix of absurdity and reality,
28:34coming after notable impressions from Daryl Hammond and Alec Baldwin.
28:46SNL is great at nailing political parodies,
28:50and Tina Fey's portrayal of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin
28:53was such a hit that it won her an Emmy for her efforts.
29:06Fey pokes fun at Palin's beauty pageant days,
29:08lack of political prowess and misplaced use of colloquialisms,
29:12wrapping it all up in an accent and voice that drills itself into your head.
29:16Fey has reprised this role on several occasions,
29:19even in front of former Governor Palin herself.
29:22It's all in good fun, of course, and never fails to make us laugh.
29:25But it is undeniably one of SNL's most savage and memorable impressions.

29:58Will Ferrell's George W. Bush comes across as likable,
30:00while simultaneously reminding audiences of all the reasons why George W. Bush
30:05was so controversial and heavily criticized.
30:08He portrays the former president as dopey, simple and painfully misinformed.
30:18The accent, language and mannerisms all feel incredibly accurate.
30:22And adding insult to injury, this goofy portrayal rarely failed to make audiences laugh.
30:38The Bush presidency was also a perfect opportunity to bring back Dana Carvey,
30:45who nails pretty much any impression, but whose overblown George Bush Sr.
30:49will always hold a special place in both the SNL archives and our hearts.
