In the Austrian state of Tyrol, Saint Nicholas Day falls each year on December 6th—and with the holiday arrives one of the world’s eeriest Christmas traditions. To welcome the season, residents dress up like Krampus, a demonic figure from Alpine folklore said to punish children who have behaved badly throughout the year.
Versions of the custom can be found all throughout Europe, including in Austria, Bavaria, and Croatia. During cities’ annual Krampus runs, don’t be surprised if you see locals being chased down the street by monsters alongside the Christmas markets and decor.
