00:00Ewan McGregor got a horrible Christmas gift.
00:04A woman, he says, showed up at his family gathering on Christmas Eve, and after having
00:11traveled across the country from Minnesota, came to L.A., and all because she has been
00:16making hundreds of threats against him for about almost three years now.
00:22And he filed these documents in court here to get a restraining order against this woman
00:28who he says has been sending more than 500 emails to either himself or family members
00:36and making some very bizarre but clearly threatening and violent threats by email, by text.
00:45And again, this really all came to a head on Christmas Eve.
00:48Ewan says he's with his wife, his kids, his ex-wife.
00:53They're all gathered together celebrating the holidays on Christmas Eve, and the woman
00:57showed up at the security gate trying to get in there.
01:02Now security turned her away, but at this point he had all these threats, and that's
01:09why he's now gone to court.
01:10I am wondering, why did it take three years?
01:14Because if somebody is doing that, the reason you get a restraining order is that when somebody
01:18violates, you can throw them in jail, as opposed to going through a trial and everything else.
01:23They violate the restraining order, boom, they go to jail.
01:26And so, and I'm not disputing what happened here, I'm just wondering, why endure that
01:32for three years?
01:33I may have an answer to that.
01:34So these started way back in 2022.
01:36A lot of them were sent to Ewan's daughter, although she was talking about Ewan McGregor.
01:41And what happened was, I think they might have thought they were harmless enough until
01:45she started saying, I'm going to come visit, and started planning out things.
01:49She was harboring clearly some delusions according to these messages.
01:52She would talk about the Da Vinci Code, she would talk about various things.
01:56But when she escalated to coming out to visit on Christmas Eve of this year, I think that's
02:00when things got out of control, because Ewan apparently came to the door and was confused
02:05at this woman's presence and that she knew him.
02:07But she never got to his door.
02:08She was at the security gate, right?
02:09He was at the gate, is where he came out to the gate to see what was going on.
02:13Oh, yes, exactly.
02:14And he was confused as to who she said she was, because the messages were being filtered
02:18through his daughter, who might have thought it was harmless enough.
02:20So he was face-to-face with her?
02:22Yeah.
02:23According to those documents, he was confused.
02:24Okay, and then I have another question.
02:26We're now in February.
02:28Right.
02:29Why, once that happens, I mean, again, I'm not disputing it, but wouldn't you run to
02:34court the next day?
02:35Yeah.
02:36You know, it's like you're face-to-face with a woman who's-
02:38Well, clearly, I think it sounds like they gathered all of this information, because
02:42he didn't even realize, I think, a lot of these were coming in.
02:44That's crazy.
02:45But the things that she was saying, I mean, I don't want to- Derek, as we were reading
02:50through the restraining order request, it felt like Baby Reindeer, if you've seen that
02:55Netflix show.
02:56But like, because the person that he's dealing with here certainly seems to have all sorts
03:03of delusions and probably some mental health issues.
03:06It feels a lot like it, even down to the spelling errors that are made.
03:09Some of these messages are typed out in such haste that there are common spelling errors.
03:13That was a feature in Baby Reindeer as well.
03:15She seems to be laboring under some possible delusions.
03:18Well, I don't think that's a crime.
03:20No.
03:21Of course you don't think that's a crime.
03:22Right.
03:23But yeah.
03:24And what it really turned, for me, reading through it, is suddenly she's making references
03:28to Dexter and that she's sort of inspired by that.
03:31She talked about shopping and researching certain rifles.
03:38So at that point-
03:40We've actually done documentaries on this.
03:42It is so hard to stop a stalker.
03:46And the police, you know, they have a unit where they can deal with high-profile people
03:51because they're the ones most likely to get this.
03:54And it is so hard for them to put the kibosh on it just because these people go from state
04:00to state.
04:01You don't know when they're coming back.
04:03And usually they cause a problem before the police are even alerted.
04:07And so this is a really tough way of living where you don't know when you walk out of
04:14your house.
04:15Is that person who's been bugging me for the last year, are they going to be lurking
04:18outside?
04:19And it's a really scary thing, especially for high-profile people.
04:23And the step of getting the restraining order means that should they make any move, come
04:28close to you, contact you, the police can immediately arrest them.
04:31That's right.
04:32That's right.
04:33And that's clearly the protection that Ewan is looking for himself and his family.
04:37Hi.
04:38This is Sherry.
04:39I'm from Honolulu.
04:40So listen.
04:41Here's another thing.
04:42I really do not think a restraining order is going to keep his family safe at all.
04:47I think that she is mentally unstable and should be forced to have some sort of analysis
04:54to find out what is going on with her.
04:56Because if she means everything that she says, a restraining order is not going to stop her.
05:01You're absolutely right.
05:02But the thing is, if she violates it by even communicating with him, sending him a text,
05:08that would be enough to put her in jail.
05:10To solve the problem, which is some mental illness, clearly.
05:14Right.
