00:00We've come to the quaintly hip Kensington neighborhood of San Diego to kill a lawn and
00:06transform it into a native plant garden.
00:08People are doing this all over the country and we're here to guide them and cheer them
00:12on.
00:13We're the hype people of this movement.
00:15We're like the fluffers for killing lawns.
00:17We didn't start this movement, we're just pouring gas on it.
00:20The thing we're just trying to get out there is that anybody could do this.
00:27This bedroom community here in Kensington Park, it was built in the 20s.
00:33Quaint little houses.
00:34You know, this is not so bad.
00:35You know, I thought we were going to be going to lawns in like a suburban death cult type
00:39area.
00:40Typical cul-de-sac community.
00:41This isn't that bad.
00:43I like that it has these small little kind of postage stamp lawns.
00:48I always appreciate those 1920s suburbs that get absorbed into a bigger city.
00:53Right.
00:54Back before the car ruined everything.
00:56It's not just lawn after lawn after lawn like in some places we've been.
01:01You got a few stragglers though.
01:02You got a couple people that just won't let go.
01:04Oh, definitely.
01:05And the grass of the people who hang on to it is brown, it's dying.
01:09They got to come out here and they got to water it in the midst of a drought.
01:12We're going to John and Carol's.
01:14You think people out here drive them electric cars?
01:16I don't know, maybe they do that.
01:19Sit them?
01:20Yeah.
01:21Come on, Louie.
01:25Really overdo it with the jacarandas.
01:30Jacaranda mimosifolia, also pronounced jacaranda, is the granddad of exotic landscaping trees
01:36in Southern California, with original planting starting as early as the 1890s.
01:42It grows naturally in Argentina and Brazil and it's ecologically out of place here in
01:46Kensington and it's not doing too good.
