00:00Travelers at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport expressed nervousness but a willingness
00:07to still travel after the January 29th midair plane and helicopter crash that claimed 67
00:13lives.
00:14The United States aviation industry has experienced a difficult week with that accident and another
00:20incident involving an air ambulance in Philadelphia on January 31st.
00:24I mean it was devastating, you know, I didn't know anyone on the plane but I know people
00:29who knew people on the plane so you know it's a sad day for those families and all those
00:34involved and I wouldn't be lying if I was a little nervous to fly today and come back
00:39on Sunday but you know you have to have faith that the airport and the pilots will have
00:44your safety at best and wouldn't let you fly.
00:46I fly all the time but that just kind of really took me back like wow, I can't believe that
00:52happened.
00:53They were so close to home.
00:54Accidents happen, they don't happen that often and it's really safe to fly, it's just
01:00awful when mistakes happen and people die.
01:03It's been 18, 20 years since there's been an accident around here, it's always busy
01:07so for the most part I think they have it well under control.
01:11During the January 29th incident, an American Airlines passenger jet and a military helicopter
01:17collided at about 8.50pm as the plane approached the airport for landing.
01:23Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board determined the plane was at 325
01:28feet, plus or minus 25 feet, at the time of impact, based on information recovered from
01:35the plane's flight data recorder.
01:37We also, initial preliminary data right now indicates that on the tower's radar scope
01:47that was available to the controller, initial data indicates that he may have seen 200 feet.
01:54The PAT-25 was within the lateral boundaries of a helicopter route.
02:02The ceiling of that route was 200 feet.
02:07The investigators said the helicopter was on a training flight where night vision goggles
02:11could have possibly been used by the pilots and the helicopter was also flying above the
02:16permitted 200 feet for the route it was using.
