00:00The International Holocaust Remembrance Day was held for the millions of victims of the so-called most horrific crime in history.
00:08This is the news center of Gav Villegas.
00:13The Embassy of Israel in the Philippines and the Jewish Community held the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
00:20It commemorates the 6 million Jews who were killed by the Nazis and their fellow citizens.
00:25Education Undersecretary Gina Gonong, Foreign Affairs Deputy Assistant Secretary Marlo Miranda,
00:31Gabriel Quezon-Avancena, who is one of the descendants of former President Manuel Alquezon,
00:36and other members of the Diplomatic Corps, also attended.
00:38In his speech, the Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines, Ilan Flus, said that the world should not forget
00:44one of the most horrific crimes in the history of mankind.
00:48The Nazis came horrifyingly close to succeeding.
00:53One third of the Jewish population was annihilated.
00:57Our nation never recovered and we're not close, even today, to this number.
01:03Israel is also responsible for the rise of anti-Semitism beliefs in various parts of the world.
01:09In the latest survey of the EDL Global 100 on anti-Semitism, the Philippines ranked 53rd.
01:17In 2014, only 3% of Filipinos who participated in the survey expressed their anti-Semitic views.
01:24After 10 years, it rose to 42%.
01:28The reason for this is the conflict between Israel and the Hamas group and other terrorist groups.
01:34This is alarming.
01:36The Philippines is a country that we are always proud.
01:39Not only that there is no anti-Semitism in the Philippines,
01:43but the Philippines, during the time of President Quezon, has gave safe haven for 1,300 Jewish refugees
01:51wherein no other country opened the gates.
01:53On behalf of Education Undersecretary Gina Gonong,
01:57the next generation should not forget the lessons from the past.
02:01Today's commemoration is not just about remembering the past.
02:05It's about reaffirming our commitment to an education that will help our youth reject hate,
02:12embrace diversity, and work to create a future where unity triumphs over division.
02:19The candle-lighting ceremony was also held and six candles were lit,
02:23symbolizing the 6 million Jews who were killed.
02:26A photo exhibit was also opened, containing photos taken during the Holocaust.
02:31In 1939, President Quezon allowed the entry of 1,300 Jews in the Philippines from 1937 to 1941.
02:40In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly passed the resolution on 27 January
02:47as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
