00:00Severe thunderstorms and possible supercells to impact parts of NSW today, with the potential
00:06for very dangerous weather conditions.
00:09Let's start by taking a look at today's thunderstorm forecast map.
00:12Now, the green areas on this map show us where storms are possible.
00:16That includes parts of northeastern and eastern NSW, including around the Sydney area.
00:22For most of those areas, non-severe storms is all we're really expecting.
00:26We could see some gusty winds or locally moderate downbursts, but for the most part,
00:31we're going to avoid those higher end hazards.
00:33However, it's a different story wherever we see the yellow or red on this map.
00:37Now, those yellow and red areas show us where severe storms are possible, if not likely.
00:43Today, that includes the northern and central ranges and the slopes to the west, as well
00:49as much of northeastern NSW, including much of the mid-north coast.
00:53Now, in those severe thunderstorm areas, we could see damaging wind gusts, large hail
00:58and heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding.
01:02Any of those severe weather impacts could bring us damage to property, your home or
01:07your business or anything sitting outdoors in the yard.
01:10We could see very dangerous driving conditions developing as water and debris moves over
01:14the roads.
01:15And of course, we could see some damage to crops, vegetation or trees as the strong winds
01:21combine with the heavy rainfall.
01:23But we do have a key focus area for today.
01:27It's that area on the map that is marked in red where severe storms are likely.
01:32In this area, we're not only most likely to see the severe thunderstorms, but we could
01:36see the most impactful hazards as well.
01:39Not just damaging winds, but destructive wind gusts in excess of 125 kilometres an hour.
01:46Not just large hail, but giant sized hail in excess of 5 centimetres of diameter.
01:52And not just heavy rainfall, but locally intense rainfall which can very quickly lead
01:57to flash flooding.
01:58All of those hazards are possible in this red area today, including parts of the northern
02:03tablelands and the northwestern slopes, most likely through this afternoon and evening.
02:09Residents in any of our storm areas today should stay well on top of the radar and any
02:13warnings we need to issue, but particularly those living in our severe thunderstorm likely
02:18area for today.
02:20Moving now onto tomorrow and how the storm outlook will play out as we go into Friday.
02:25We're still expecting storms possibly severe across parts of northeastern New South Wales,
02:30but mostly it's going to be focused around the mid-north coast and adjacent inland areas,
02:34with heavy rainfall being the main risk.
02:37This risk is still present tomorrow, but it's not as widespread or as intense as the risk
02:42we're seeing today.
02:44Wherever you are across New South Wales, particularly in those severe thunderstorm areas, it is
02:48essential to stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings via our website, the
02:52BOM Weather App or via our social media.
02:55Stay safe and we'll catch you in the next update.
