00:00OpenAI believes outputs from its artificial intelligence models may have been used by
00:04Chinese startup DeepSeek to train its new open-source model that impressed many observers
00:10and shook U.S. financial markets on Monday, according to a Financial Times report.
00:15The Chat-GBT maker told the Financial Times that it had seen some evidence that suggests
00:20DeepSeek may have tapped into its data through distillation, a technique where outputs from
00:24a larger and more advanced AI model are used to train and improve a smaller model.
00:29Bloomberg reported that OpenAI and its key backer Microsoft were investigating whether
00:34DeepSeek used OpenAI's application programming interface, which allows other businesses and
00:39platforms to tap into the company's AI model to carry out the distillation.
00:45According to the FT report, the two companies had investigated and blocked accounts using
00:49the API last year over suspected distillation, a violation of OpenAI's terms and conditions,
00:55which they believed belonged to DeepSeek.
00:58The issue was first flagged by President Donald Trump's AI czar appointee David Sachs,
01:04who told Fox News that there was substantial evidence that DeepSeek distilled outputs from
01:09OpenAI models.
01:11He added, quote, I don't think OpenAI is very happy about this.
01:16Sachs also said that, over the next few months, America's leading AI companies will start
01:21taking steps to try and prevent distillation, which would, quote, definitely slow down some
01:26of these copycat models.
01:28The app has also raised national security concerns at the White House, and its impact
01:32is being reviewed by the National Security Council, White House Press Secretary Caroline
01:37Leavitt said, adding, quote, This is a wake-up call to the American AI industry.
