00:00Here are seven staple beans and how to cook with them.
00:03Let's start with chickpeas.
00:04These are one of my absolute favorites.
00:06Six grams of protein per half cup.
00:08And they are incredibly versatile.
00:11You can marinate them, you can fry them.
00:13You can also use the dried ones when soaked
00:17and make them into a fritter, like a falafel.
00:21You can buzz the canned ones into hummus.
00:24Next, let's talk about white beans.
00:26With seven grams of protein per half cup serving,
00:29these are the Cadillac of the bean world, in my opinion.
00:33They're great buzzed into dips.
00:36They're great marinated.
00:37They're also great as the base of a skillet dinner,
00:39like my creamy Tuscan white bean skillet.
00:42Of all of the smaller white beans, they are the best.
00:47Next up, black beans.
00:49Often seen as a side with rice or in chilies,
00:53these black beans are the fastest to cook from scratch.
00:57They have 18 grams of protein per half cup serving.
01:01Let's chat pinto.
01:03They have seven grams of protein per half cup serving.
01:06And they are most often seen in chili
01:09or as the base of refried beans.
01:13But that's not all you can use pinto beans for.
01:15They could also be great marinated,
01:17great as a topper for salad, great with rice.
01:20Basically, anywhere that a red kidney bean would go
01:23or a black bean would go, you could probably sub in pinto.
01:28Next up, red kidney beans.
01:30These are most often seen maybe served with rice,
01:33maybe in chili.
01:35Sometimes they are doctored with chili seasonings
01:37and sold as chili beans.
01:40That's how I was introduced as a child.
01:42They have eight grams of protein per half cup serving.
01:46And they are a very mild, slightly earthy bean.
01:50Let's chat black eyed peas.
01:52They might not at first seem like a bean,
01:55but they definitely are.
01:58These babies are often seen, especially at New Year's Eve.
02:00They're very popular stewed with greens and pork product,
02:05but they're also just delicious in any soup and stew.
02:09With eight grams of protein per serving,
02:11they're a great alt choice
02:12if you're looking to mix up your bean regimen.
02:15Last up, the biggest of the bunch, butter beans.
02:19Remember those lima beans
02:20that you hated when you were a kid?
02:22Well, butter bean is their grownup sibling.
02:26These babies have six grams of protein per serving,
02:30so they're not quite as hefty,
02:31but they are so creamy and delicious.
02:35I like them in creamy sauces,
02:38like a creamy lemon garlic kind of situation.
02:41They're also good in thicker sauces
02:43because their size means they can hold up.
