As Glasgow celebrates its 850th anniversary a year’s programme of activities led by the city council has officially launched.

Glasgow gained its Burgh status in 1175, which at the time gave it a degree of self-government and special privileges.

This gave Glasgow the right to trade and hold markets, the ability to boost its own economy and attract more people, traders and businesses.

It signified a recognition from the King, which at the time was King Willian I of Scotland, and laid the foundation for Glasgow to evolve from a small religious settlement into an important economic centre.

Without this pivotal moment in history Glasgow may not have become the cultural epicentre it is for Scotland today.

A list of businesses and community hubs across the city are participating in events to celebrate this huge milestone.

This includes putting the River Clyde at the centre of storytelling, enhance Glasgow’s reputation, reflect on its transformation and growth since its 800th year was celebrated and speed up ambitions for the future.
