00:00I'm Christopher Landon. I'm the director of Drop.
00:02It's just a date.
00:03Mm-hmm. There's no harm, no foul.
00:04Drop is about a woman stepping out
00:07for the first time in a long time.
00:10Okay, don't forget, bedtime is 8.
00:12Sharp. Big sister is watching.
00:13Violet is a really complex character.
00:15She is a single mother.
00:17She is opening herself up to the idea of romance and love,
00:21and so she agrees to go on this date.
00:23She's really nervous because she has a very dark past,
00:26but she is courageous enough to accept this invitation.
00:30I can't believe we're actually doing this.
00:33Yeah. Somebody keeps sending me these.
00:38But there is an unseen person controlling her,
00:41watching her every move, listening to her every word.
00:44Violet. Violet, are you okay?
00:57Is it the bartender? Is it the hostess?
00:59Is it the waiter? She's trying to figure out who it is
01:04while trying to maintain this sort of facade.
01:08And then ultimately, we realize that she has been tasked
01:11with murdering her date.
01:12No. I can't do that.
01:21We shot the movie with very sort of traditional coverage
01:24because we wanted to create sort of a false sense of safety,
01:27but as soon as Violet checks her security camera,
01:29we start moving into angles and images that are off-kilter.
01:33It's like her whole world breaks from its axis.
01:39What's different here than my previous films,
01:41Happy Death Day or Freaky and Drop?
01:44We use comedy sparingly but effectively.
01:47I wrote a film called Disturbia,
01:49which was Hitchcock by way of John Hughes.
01:52This felt like the evolution of that kind of a film.
01:55It straddles sort of Hitchcock,
01:56but it's also very much like a 90s thriller,
01:59but it's using very modern technology.
02:03There's something about the idea of being tormented
02:06and harassed by an unseen person on your phone,
02:10whether it's on social media or it could be an ex,
02:12and this is just sort of the fully realized
02:15ultimate nightmare version of that.
02:17It's having a real conversation with the audience
02:19about the nature of our very highly abusive online culture.
02:23Please, I'm begging you. Please, don't do this.
02:26Drop is suspenseful and exciting and emotional.
02:29There's so many twists and turns.
02:32It just hits different in a theater.
02:34It's an irreplaceable experience.
02:36The movie is like a roller coaster.
02:38It's this very gradual ascent up the ramp,
02:41and then once you get to the top, you hit that drop.
02:43How's the day going?
02:44Seem kind of on edge.
02:45First date jitters.
