00:00With the ceasefire deadline only days away, Israel reportedly asked for more time for
00:05its troops to withdraw from Lebanon.
00:11A once-in-a-lifetime storm has forced authorities to issue severe weather warnings in the UK
00:16and Ireland this Friday.
00:25A federal judge has temporarily blocked US President Donald Trump's executive order
00:29ending birthright citizenship.
00:32The order was signed among a slew of other orders on inauguration day.
00:38Trump's administration argues that children born in the United States to non-citizen parents
00:42are not subject to US jurisdiction.
00:45US District Judge John Kunauer says the order was so blatantly unconstitutional and blocked
00:51it for 14 days.
00:54The decision came during the first hearing in a multi-state effort challenging the order
00:58and the ruling was welcomed.
01:01This is fairly simple.
01:02This has been expressly determined by the United States Supreme Court and Congress and
01:07multiple executives have looked at it and agreed.
01:10And so I was not surprised to see Judge Kunauer sort of dismiss the absurdity of the order
01:16and the absurdity of the President's action.
01:20Immigration attorneys believe Trump wants to end birthright citizenship as a possible
01:24deterrent for illegal migration.
01:27They say that the order, even if passed, will not affect immigration.
01:33There's so much economic opportunity and freedom that's available in the United States that's
01:38such a pull factor for immigrants around the world that they can hope for their children
01:43to have a better life in the United States whether or not those children are US citizens.
01:47I'm not sure that birthright citizenship is a big factor in many people's minds when they
01:53decide to migrate.
01:56The 47th U.S. President is persistent and has vowed to fight the judge's ruling.
02:01Mr. President, a U.S. judge temporarily blocked the birthright citizenship order.
02:07Do you have any reaction?
02:08No.
02:09Obviously, we'll appeal it.
02:10They put it before a certain judge in Seattle, I guess, right?
02:14And there's no surprises with that judge.
02:20If the order is deemed a constitutional change, it'll likely be a very lengthy process to
02:24reform.
02:26Any constitutional changes in the United States must be agreed upon by three-quarters of all
02:30states and then approved by two-thirds of both chambers of Congress, the House and the
02:35Senate.
02:37U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that the war in Ukraine could be brought to an
02:44end by a fall in the price of oil.
02:47Speaking via video link at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump said he would ask OPEC
02:52to lower the price of oil, suggesting economic measures rather than military aid could be
02:58the key to ending the conflict.
03:02If the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately.
03:07Right now, the price is high enough that that war will continue.
03:10You got to bring down the oil price, you're going to end that war.
03:12Our efforts to secure a peace settlement between Russia and Ukraine are now hopefully underway.
03:18It's so important to get that done.
03:20That is an absolute killing field.
03:23Millions of soldiers are being killed.
03:26Nobody's seen anything like it since World War II.
03:29OPEC consists of 12 oil-rich countries whose sheer heft as a bloc means they can dramatically
03:35affect the price of oil by ramping production up or down.
03:39However, the plausibility of Trump's strategy is unclear.
03:42Russia has weathered a multitude of U.S. and European sanctions since its full-scale invasion
03:47of Ukraine.
03:48Iran, meanwhile, is both a member of OPEC and a Russian ally and may push back against
03:53Trump's proposed plan.
03:56In a statement, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also rebuffed Trump's proposal, saying
04:01a settlement in Ukraine would not be possible by a drop in oil prices.
04:11At least three people have died following an overnight Russian drone attack on Kiev
04:16on Friday.
04:17According to Ukraine's state emergency service, drone fragments hit a 10-story apartment,
04:22causing fire and destruction on several floors.
04:26The attack also damaged several private houses, a shop and three vehicles.
04:31Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that Putin and Zelensky share equal
04:36blame for the war.
04:37You know, if he's no angel, he shouldn't have allowed this war to happen.
04:42First of all, he's fighting a much bigger entity, okay?
04:48Much bigger.
04:49When he was, you know, talking so brave and so...
04:52Now, two things happened.
04:55They were brave, but we gave them billions of dollars.
04:58The United States spent $200 billion more than Europe.
05:02Why did we spend more?
05:03You know why?
05:04Because Biden never asked Europe to spend more.
05:07In the interview, Donald Trump also reiterated his intention to heavily sanction Russia if
05:12a deal is not reached to end the war.
05:15Zelensky has held several meetings with European leaders in recent weeks about the possibility
05:20of sending NATO peacekeeping troops to Ukraine in the event of a peace deal.
05:24Russia, however, has strongly opposed this prospect, saying it would lead to uncontrolled
05:29escalation.
05:43Should the EU fund hard borders?
05:46This is the topic that was at the heart of the debate at the European Parliament on Thursday.
05:52The issue has been discussed many times in the past.
05:55The EU's Commission position is that it does not provide financial assistance for the construction
06:00of barriers or fences, although it can fund border protection capabilities and infrastructure,
06:06such as cameras and surveillance systems.
06:10With migration back on the agenda due to the hybrid attacks by Russia and Belarus on
06:15European borders and elections in many member states, the debate is back.
06:21I think it would be more than needed to have certain investments coming from the EU side
06:28because it's very expensive.
06:31The countries having a border with those aggressive states, they simply overspent their budget
06:40protecting other member states.
06:42So that's why it should be a sense of solidarity, like in case of accepting refugees.
06:50But for many MEPs, funding fences and walls symbolizes a change in the EU's identity.
06:58We strongly oppose EU financiation for fences in the external borders of the European Union.
07:04We understand that there are borders and they are to be protected, but fairly and in good
07:09balance, not only strengthening external borders, but also cooperating fairly with
07:14countries in transit of origin, opening up legal pathways and of course understanding
07:19the EU commitment to fundamental rights and human rights, which are also to protect migrants
07:26and asylum seekers for that matter.
07:31Many member states, such as Poland, have recently switched opinion and now support the idea
07:35of funding barriers.
07:39With the change in composition of the European Parliament towards the far right, the decision
07:44to approve financing hard borders now seems more likely.
07:55Israel reportedly asked the US for a further 30 days to withdraw from southern Lebanon,
08:01only days ahead of the 60-day deadline stipulated in the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah.
08:11The news comes as Israel claims the terms of the ceasefire with Hezbollah were not being
08:16implemented quickly enough.
08:18Meanwhile, the Iran-backed militant group called for increased pressure to ensure Israeli
08:23forces withdraw by Monday, as outlined in the agreement.
08:30The deal requires Israeli troops to withdraw from southern Lebanon for Hezbollah to remove
08:34fighters and weapons from the area and that Lebanese troops deploy in the region.
08:42However, Israel claims that the Lebanese army has deployed too slowly and that they continue
08:49to find Hezbollah weapons caches.
08:53Hezbollah said in a statement that Israel postponing its withdrawal would be unacceptable
08:57and an infringement on Lebanese sovereignty.
09:05A once-in-a-lifetime storm is ripping across the UK and Ireland this Friday, with severe
09:11weather warnings being issued to citizens.
09:14Two rare red weather warnings are in place in Ireland and Scotland, meaning there is
09:19a risk to life.
09:21In Ireland, a record gust of 135 kmph was recorded at the west coast on Friday morning.
09:29These images show the streets of Galway flooded overnight.
09:32Government mobile phone warnings have urged citizens to stay home.
09:36Over 700,000 homes are without power in Ireland.
09:41Travel has also been heavily disrupted, with roads blocked by fallen trees and rail services
09:46halted.
09:47Flights have been cancelled in Belfast, Dublin, Edinburgh and London.
09:51Scientists have said the rapid intensification of storm Aowen, bartering in from the Atlantic
09:57Ocean, may possibly be linked to climate change.
10:05The French-made Spanish-language Emilia Perez dominated this year's Oscar nominations, leading
10:11the pack with 13 nominations.
10:20The film set an Oscar record for a non-English language film, and its leading actress, Carla
10:25Sofia Gascon, became the first openly transgender performer to be nominated in her category.
10:39Another musical, Wicked, also scored big with 10 nominations, including for Best Picture
10:44and both actress categories for its stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
10:54Other expected leading nominees include The Brutalist, Anora, Conclave and A Complete
10:59Unknown.
11:04The Apprentice, one of the year's more audacious films dramatizing the formative years of President
11:09Donald Trump, landed a more surprising pair of nominations for its leading actors, Sebastian
11:14Stan and Jeremy Strong.
11:18In the directing category, the substance filmmaker Coralie Fargeat managed to crack into an otherwise
11:23all-male group.
11:26With five weeks to go until the Oscar ceremony, at least four or five movies, including The
11:31Brutalist, Emilia Perez, Anora, Conclave and Wicked, are seen having a shot at Best Picture.
