00:00Right now I am at Government Medical College, Rajouri, where people have been brought here for observation.
00:10You can see, this is a special observation bar, where you can see how people have been brought here for observation.
00:22The number of people who have been brought here for observation is 32.
00:2917 people have already died in that village, after which the administration came into action.
00:34They are continuing with the sampling.
00:37The administration has now decided to build an observation bar here.
00:50I am Dr. Suja Kadri, Head of the Department of Community Medicine and Epidemiologist.
00:59Medical College was given the responsibility of doing the surveillance of this area since the beginning of the incident.
01:06Simultaneously, to give an expert opinion, do a detailed epidemiological investigation to rule out what is the probable cause of this death.
01:17So, once we started our investigation under our worthy principal, Prof. Dr. A.S. Bhatia Sir,
01:23we made a team of healthcare people, where I was heading the team, and we went to the area.
01:30So, in our epidemiological investigation, there are different steps involved in the epidemiological investigation.
01:37So, we did active surveillance, we did passive surveillance, we looked at the clinical features of the cases,
01:44their deaths, we did verbal autopsies, we looked at the parameters of food, their water, their sanitation, their hygiene, their housing conditions, their environment.
01:56And as of preliminary investigation, as of now, our epidemiological findings have reached this conclusion.
02:05And the reports that we have available, it is not a bacterial, it is not a viral, it is not a protozoa, it is not a zoonotic disease.
02:13Why I am saying this as an expert, because the preliminary reports which are available with us from the preliminary institutes
02:21shows no virus, no bacteria, no protozoa, no zoonotic disease in the samples of the patients.
02:29So, only left is, that is toxin.
02:32So, only one thing which is left, after ruling out bacteria, viral, protozoa, zoonotic disease,
02:39the focus of the epidemiologist goes to the toxin.
02:43So, when we shortlisted the toxin, then we, as epidemiology, we looked at the signs and symptoms of the patients.
02:52And then we looked at what could be the probable toxin.
02:56That means, our epidemiological findings, as the epidemiologist, the clinical features of the patients,
03:04and the epidemiological study, it coincides with the availability of a toxin.
03:10Now, what is toxin?
03:12The main route of transmission of toxin is through ingestion.
03:15And there are others as well.
03:18So, the final diagnosis is that this is toxin and this toxin is ingested.
03:24Now, it is a matter of debate whether it is accidental or it is deliberate that the district administration is into it.
03:31Thank you so much.
03:32For ATV Bharat, I am Mohd Aslam from Government Medical College, Rajouri.
