00:06to boost military spending.
00:11Environmental group Greenpeace wins a case against the Dutch state ordered to cut their
00:16nitrogen deposition.
00:21On his first full day as U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio met with his counterparts
00:26from Japan, India and Australia.
00:31A day after a fire killed at least 76 people at a ski resort in Turkey, witnesses described
00:37harrowing scenes of panic.
00:44Europe was, is and will be great again.
00:48This is how Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphatically opened his speech on Wednesday
00:52in the European Parliament.
00:56With remarks similar to those of U.S. President Donald Trump, he made a passionate plea for
01:01ramping up military spending to ensure the continent can defend itself against its adversaries
01:06without relying on the U.S. security umbrella.
01:22Tusk said in order to avoid a tragic repetition of history, Europe must come up with flexible
01:32and creative ways of financing military expenditure.
01:36But this effort could involve issues of EU-wide debt.
01:41Poland is NATO's leader in defense spending, with a projected 4.7% of GDP for 2025.
01:48During his campaign, Trump said he would encourage Russia to quote, do whatever the hell they
01:52want to NATO countries that fail to spend at least 2% of their GDP on defense.
02:02The European Union needs to boost its defense spending to prepare for the worst and be able
02:07to defend itself alone if needed, according to the bloc's top diplomat, Kaya Callas.
02:13She said EU member states spent a collective average of 1.9% of their GDP on defense, while
02:20Russia was spending 9%.
02:22There should be no doubt in any of our minds that we need to spend more to prevent war.
02:31But we also need to prepare for war.
02:34We need to improve our capabilities.
02:36We need our defense industry to produce what we need.
02:40We must prepare for the worst.
02:43Over the next decade, Callas said the EU will need at least 500 billion euro to remain competitive
02:49in defense.
02:50But so far, only around 13 billion euro has been earmarked in the EU's long-term budget
02:56from 2021 to 2027.
03:03Environmental group Greenpeace won a legal battle against the Dutch state, which now
03:08must take more measures to limit nitrogen deposition, in a ruling delivered by the Hague
03:15Court on Wednesday.
03:16The decision compels the Dutch government to meet emission-curbing targets by 2030,
03:22or it could face a fine of 10 million euros.
03:47The court insisted that if the Netherlands doesn't impose sufficient regulatory measures
03:52to protect the environment, it is at risk of not adhering to EU law.
03:57A national rural area plan put in place by the previous cabinet offered the opportunity
04:02to get started with prioritizing sustainability, but that program is being abolished by the
04:08current cabinet.
04:16Russia is intensifying its bombardment campaign as it strikes multiple Ukrainian cities.
04:21Moscow fired Iranian-made Shahid strike drones as it targeted the central city of Cherkassy.
04:28The attack caused some damage to properties in the vicinity.
04:32Locals say windows of five two-story residential buildings, a school and a retail store, as
04:37well as some doors completely blew out.
04:40In the eastern city of Pokrovsk, the Kremlin launched a barrage of more than 130 Shahid
04:45drones as well as numerous decoy drones, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.
04:50Local authorities say three multi-story buildings and three houses suffered extensive damage.
04:56The drones set ablaze a large portion of a nine-story building covering one square kilometer.
05:02And in the Dnipro, more than 150 houses suffered damage of varying degree, and two two-story
05:08buildings were reduced to rubble as Moscow's rockets pummeled the area.
05:13At least two people sustained injuries and were transferred to medical centers for treatment.
05:19Locals say the attacks were like a nightmare.
05:43The Kremlin's attacks also extended to the northeast of the country, targeting Ukraine's
05:52second largest city, Kharkiv.
05:54Regional officials say the attacks there caused minor damage to some properties in the area,
05:59and no casualties were reported.
06:06On his first full day as U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio met with his counterparts
06:11from Japan, India and Australia, a group known as the Quad.
06:16The grouping of the four countries has been seen by many as an initiative to counter or
06:21at least slow China's increasing assertiveness in the region.
06:26Rubio is known for his hardline stance against China, and the timing of the meeting suggests
06:30combating China's influence will remain a top priority for Trump and his chief diplomat.
06:37After his confirmation, Rubio stressed that he will execute President Trump's America
06:41First mantra in his foreign policy.
06:45In our republic, the voters decide the course of our nation, both domestically and abroad.
06:50And they have elected Donald J. Trump as our president when it comes to foreign policy
06:54on a very clear mission.
06:56And that mission is to ensure that our foreign policy is centered on one thing, and that
07:00is the advancement of our national interest, which they have clearly defined through his
07:04campaign as anything that makes us stronger or safer or more prosperous.
07:11But just as Donald Trump brings his more unilateralist approach against China back to the White
07:16House, China is also seeking to improve relations with U.S. allies.
07:21From China's point of view, improving relations with countries like Japan and India and increasing
07:26economic cooperation will offset the shocks to China-U.S. economic relations.
07:34The newly sworn in U.S. President Donald Trump defended his decision to grant clemency
07:42to people convicted of assaulting police officers during the 2021 attack on the Capitol.
07:48He used his first hours back in the Oval Office to erase the records of more than 200 people
07:53who pled guilty to assaulting officers at the Capitol four years ago and freed around
07:591,500 people convicted of trying to overthrow the government.
08:03If you look at the American public, the American public is tired of it.
08:06Take a look at the election.
08:08Just look at the numbers on the election.
08:10We won this election in a landslide because the American public is tired of people like
08:16you that are just one-sided, horrible people in terms of crime.
08:20You don't talk about all the people that have been killed.
08:24The new U.S. president said the sentences handed down were ridiculous and excessive
08:28and described the rioters as people who actually love our country.
08:33Trump also suggested there could be a place in U.S. politics for the far-right Proud Boys
08:37and Oath Keeper groups, who organized and rallied supporters to violence in the chaos
08:42that unraveled on the 6th of January.
08:48As protests erupt against executive orders by Donald Trump to clamp down on the rights
08:53of immigrants in the U.S., Venezuela's president says the country is waiting for migrants to
08:58return home.
09:00Nicolas Maduro's comments come after Washington and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection
09:05announced that the CBP One app would no longer be used to admit migrants into the country.
09:11Migrants know that their return to Venezuela recovers many things, respect as human beings,
09:21but also their right to come to rumble with their families, with their friends.
09:25How much does a migrant suffer in Chicago, in New York, when he sees his friends rumbling
09:33here on Thursdays and Fridays?
09:35Millions of Venezuelans were driven from the country during Maduro's decade-long rule
09:40after facing political unrest and economic decline.
09:44After Maduro was sworn in for a third term, the EU and U.S. both denounced his inauguration
09:50as illegitimate amid allegations of fraudulent vote counting.
10:00A day after a fire killed at least 76 people at a ski resort in northwestern Turkey, emergency
10:07workers continued to search for bodies.
10:10Sheets used by escapees dangled from the blackened windows.
10:15Witnesses described harrowing scenes of panic as hotel guests attempted to escape.
