South Korea's impeached president Yoon arrives in court to fight detention extension
Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol arrives at Seoul’s Western District Court on Jan. 18, 2025 for a hearing to fight a request by investigators to extend his detention on accusations of insurrections according to his lawyer. A convoy of vehicles arrived at the court compound, with blue vehicle, marked at the side as ‘Seoul Regional Correction’ and sporting the logo of the Ministry of Justice, reportedly ferrying Yoon. Some of Yoon’s supporters were gathered in the street across from the court compound, waving South Korean and US flags. Insurrection, the crime alleged against Yoon by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, is one of the few that an incumbent South Korean president does not have immunity from. Detention warrant hearings usually last about two hours in South Korea but can last eight to 10 hours if arguments heat up.
