00:00Due to changing lifestyle, the disease of stroke is increasing day by day.
00:07In such a situation, one in four people in India is being diagnosed with stroke.
00:14With us is Dr. Vivek Gupta, who is seeing the diseases of stroke and has also given relief to many patients.
00:23Sir, stroke has become a common word these days, but people do not know about it.
00:30They are still confused that it is a mental disease, but there is no cure for it.
00:37So, what kind of patients come to you for stroke?
00:41Stroke is a disease about which there is very little awareness, very little knowledge.
00:46Stroke, simply if I say, brain attack is stroke.
00:49As everyone knows about heart attack, brain attack is a similar and equally common disease, which in medical terminology is called stroke.
00:57So, stroke is increasing, and why does stroke happen?
01:03Because if there is a clot in the blood supply of the brain or it gets blocked, then it is a stroke.
01:08Why does it happen?
01:09Because if the brain does not get blood supply, then the brain will not work.
01:12If the brain does not work, then either there will be paralysis in the hand or in the leg or the speech will be damaged.
01:17So, that is why stroke happens.
01:19Sir, if we talk about age, is there any minimum age where the chances of stroke increase and a person needs to pay attention to himself?
01:31This is a very good question because stroke or heart attack, we have always believed that it is a disease of old people.
01:39But if I look at the patients of the last 10 years, there are many patients who are now suffering from stroke at a young age.
01:46Earlier, we used to believe that stroke can happen only after the age of 60, it cannot happen to young people.
01:50Now, many people come at the age of 20, 30, 40.
01:53So, there is no age limit for stroke.
01:55Children also have stroke, it is not very common, but children also have stroke.
01:59So, there is no age group limited for stroke.
02:02Earlier, we believed that there are more chances above 60, now we say that there are more chances above 40.
02:07Sir, when a stroke occurs, the tongue gets twisted, a part of the body gets paralyzed.
02:16So, in such a situation, what kind of precautions should a person take while not using any medicine?
02:25So, if anyone feels that there is any symptom of stroke, what is the symptom?
02:29If the tongue is twisted or the hands and feet are not working, the balance is not being maintained.
02:34So, the first precaution is not to give anything from the mouth.
02:37Because if you give something from the mouth, if it is not able to swallow, then it can stop breathing.
02:41So, do not try to give water, do not give anything to eat.
02:46If it is vomiting, then you have to put it aside so that whatever is in the mouth can come out.
02:51The second precaution is not to give anything to any blood thinning agent or aspirin or dispirant.
02:56Because giving it can cause more damage.
02:59So, if anyone feels that there is a stroke, then it is the best treatment option to take the patient to the hospital as soon as possible.
03:05Sir, when we reach the hospital, there is a surgery called Mechanical Thermobectomy.
03:14What kind of procedure is this and how can a stroke patient be saved from this?
03:20So, Mechanical Thermobectomy is a new and advanced technique with which we treat stroke patients.
03:27In this technique, without opening the brain, by making a small hole in the wrist or leg,
03:34with the help of some devices, we can go where there is a blockage in the brain through advanced machines.
03:39And we can pull out the clot.
03:41So, it is called Mechanical Thermobectomy because it is done mechanically.
03:44Sir, apart from PGI, in which other regions and institutes is this surgery done?
03:57How much does it cost?
03:59Because every person feels that there is a stroke and surgery is expensive.
04:04So, how is this surgery done in a budget?
04:08So, all the advanced healthcare treatments are costly.
04:13There is no doubt that they are costly.
04:16So, if the cost is an issue, then in the government, where it is available in our region,
04:21if I talk about Tri-City or North of Delhi, then in the government set-up, it is available only in PGI and nowhere else.
04:27In the private set-up, it is available in Fortis Mohali.
04:31Because this advanced treatment is also covered in Ayushman Bharat,
04:38so all those hospitals where these schemes are running and are available in Mechanical Thermobectomy,
04:43the patients who are not financially sound, can take advantage of it.
04:48But there is no such place where it is free.
04:52Because whatever treatment it is, it is a costly treatment.
04:55Dr. Vivek Gupta, tell us that after surgery, you have recently operated on an 80-year-old lady
05:04and she is now free from the stroke.
05:07And after a week, she has returned home.
05:10So, how was her condition and in what condition did she come to you?
05:14So, this is a matter of 3-4 weeks ago.
05:18So, the patient came in an emergency.
05:20His attendants brought his daughter along.
05:22So, he was not able to move his hands and legs.
05:26And there was no speech as well.
05:28So, when he came, because I am a stroke specialist, I only see stroke and do not treat any other disease,
05:32so we could recognize that it is a stroke.
05:34So, immediately we guided him.
05:36I think he came to us at 7 or 8 o'clock.
05:38So, the treatment could not be done.
05:40So, we guided him and he understood that yes, this treatment can be beneficial.
05:44So, his relatives also did not waste any time.
05:48They allowed us to do it.
05:50And his nerves were formed in two places, here in the neck and inside the brain.
05:54And we were lucky enough to open both the places.
05:57And the patient stayed with us for 4-5 days.
05:59He stayed in the ICU for 1-2 days.
06:01And he was discharged.
06:03And the good thing is that he walked home.
06:05And yesterday he came for follow-up in the OPD.
06:07And she is normal.
06:09So, sometimes when the patient reaches the hospital on time,
06:13and the relatives understand the importance of the technique,
06:16then we get very good results.
06:18Thank you so much.
06:20This was Dr. Vivek Gupta with us,
06:22who is a neuro-interventive.
06:24And he is giving his services in the 40s.
06:27But before this, he has also worked as a professor in PGI for such patients.
06:34With camera person Kishan, Nagma Singh's report, ETV Bharat.
