Jonny Drury and Lewis Cox discuss the latest in Albion's managerial search on the new episode of the Baggies Broadcast.
Transcript
00:00I will reserve any sort of fanfare until any deal is struck or if a deal is struck with
00:06Tony Mowbray.
00:07But for me, there is a lot of sentimentality and it's certainly from Albion fans of my
00:12era and eras gone by, you know, of what he'd done in the game, you know, or what he did
00:18at Albion, you know, still is arguably his most successful spell, certainly in terms
00:22of trophies, was with Albion.
00:26I have long said that he is the best championship manager out of work, out there.
00:34He's arguably the best manager in the, well he's not in the championship at the moment,
00:40but of managers that are still in work in the championship.
00:42He is up there massively.
00:44His last job at Birmingham, I know he was only there for eight games, won four of them,
00:48turned it around straight away from a terrible situation prior to that Sunderland where he
00:54took them from lower down in the championship right to, well, into the playoffs and on the
00:58cusp of promotion and then was sacked, you know, I think ownership changes and politics
01:03in the boardroom probably played a lot of a part in that.
01:06At Blackburn, he took us back to the championship, you know, after they were down in the doldrums.
01:10He had a difficult time at Coventry and his spell at Celtic, you know, expectations are
01:15massive in Scotland and that did work out.
01:18But he's a manager who's evolved, who's adapted.
01:21He knows the championship.
01:22He's a great developer of young players, which we've seen, and he's, you know, spoken openly
01:27about that.
01:28And that is something that Bill Coole really want to do.
01:29For me, it kind of fits the mould.
01:32Yes, reading between the lines, they were looking to go for a foreign coach who was
01:36sort of...
01:37Data and analytics, yeah.
01:38However, the landscape is, you have to be adaptable.
01:42The landscape does change, you know.
01:46I think they did, the club did the right thing originally by widening the search and trying
01:51to make it as broad as possible.
01:53Obviously, there has been some, I don't want to say failures, but bumps right at the very
02:00end of that process.
02:01Because, you know, let's be honest, if those coach issues were sorted, Raphael Wickey would
02:04probably be on the training field now with West Brom.
02:09But those things have changed.
02:10Mowbray was in the frame.
02:11And when you probably look at the candidates that everyone's been talking about, he tops
02:15that Bill.
02:16He fits that Bill for a manager who can come in, get this side playing decent, attractive
02:22football.
02:23You know, they're in a good position as it is at the moment.
02:25You know, I know I haven't looked at the championship table because we've been in FA Cup week,
02:30but they're still in and around there.
02:32You know, that is the goal for the end of the season.
02:33Obviously, we'll come on to the striking issues they've got at the moment, but I just think
02:39whatever length of contract it is, I think it's just a fantastic appointment that will
02:44galvanise the fans.
02:46And yes, maybe Bill Cole and Andrew Nesta and Shillam Patel have kind of had to move
02:51their criteria maybe a tad bit.
02:56But if they do strike a deal with Mowbray, if Mowbray does come back to Albion, I think
03:01it is going to be a very good, it will be a very, very good appointment.
