00:45A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas has been announced.
00:49The deal brokered by the United States, Qatar and Egypt will offer much-needed respite
00:53for the people of Gaza, who've been enduring 15 months of war.
00:57World leaders have welcomed this development with open arms.
01:00Well, we've had many difficult days since Hamas began its terrible war.
01:05We've encountered roadblocks and setbacks.
01:08We've not given up.
01:10And now, after more than 400 days of struggle, the day of success has arrived.
01:19Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who's recently announced his resignation after weeks
01:23of domestic turmoil, also weighed in on the matter.
01:27Canada stands ready to do whatever it can to ensure the success of this agreement.
01:32But more than that, this ceasefire gives us hope, hope that we can now focus our attention
01:37on a true, lasting political solution to this conflict.
01:42The United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary David Lammy says the deal is an opportunity for
01:47both sides to begin the healing process and for this 15-month nightmare to end.
01:53I welcome, particularly for those hostage families, that this deal has finally been
02:01broken and for the agony and horrors of war and the Palestinian people in Gaza, finally
02:09this horror has come to an end.
02:13And UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who's been an instrumental player in the war,

02:22He thanked the mediators for their efforts in securing the deal, but stressed that now
02:26attention must turn towards achieving a permanent peace.
02:30Ending the occupation and achieving a negotiated two-state solution with Israel and Palestine
02:38living side by side in peace and security in line with international law, relevant UN
02:44resolutions and previous agreements remain an urgent priority.
02:50Only through a viable two-state solution can the aspirations of both peoples be fulfilled.
02:58The deal is set to begin on Sunday, January 19.
03:02It will be implemented in three stages, which will feature the release of dozens of hostages
03:06held in Gaza, the release of 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israel and weeks of peace.
03:20The European Union is laying preliminary ground to a wide-range lifting of sanctions on Syria,
03:25according to a non-paper seen by Euronews.
03:28The bloc is considering lifting sanctions on transportation, exports of oil and gas
03:33and financial and banking activities.
03:36The informal EU document says that any possible change to terrorist designations of al-Qaeda-affiliated
03:41groups, like Syria's ruling Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, must be implemented at the UN Security Council
03:47level before the bloc adopts it.
03:50The paper says that delisting terror groups will have to be conditions-based as to prevent
03:54any risk of financing terrorism.
03:57The non-paper was produced by the EU Council for Negotiations and is expected to be substantively
04:03discussed during a meeting of EU foreign ministers on January 27.
04:08The document states that the country's ousted president, Bashar al-Assad, and affiliates
04:13cannot benefit from the lifting and will still be subjected to sanctions.
04:25U.S. President Joe Biden used his farewell address on Wednesday to deliver stark warnings
04:30of a dangerous concentration of power in the hands of the ultra-wealthy.
04:51Biden referenced former President Dwight Eisenhower's final address in 1961, in which he warned
04:57of a military-industrial complex.
05:27Biden used his 15-minute address to offer a model for a peaceful transfer of power and
05:36raised concerns about his successor, Donald Trump, without mentioning his name.
05:41His remarks come after some of the world's richest individuals in the technology industry
05:45have flocked to Trump's side in recent months.
05:52Defense ministers from over 20 NATO members are meeting in Brussels to discuss security
05:56and upcoming challenges to the alliance.
06:00NATO's Chief Mark Root opened the two-day session with a clear goal, shifting to a wartime
06:06mindset.
06:07To prevent war, we need to prepare for it.
06:13It's time to shift to a wartime mindset.
06:17And this means we need to make our defenses even stronger by spending more on defense,
06:22producing more and better defense capabilities.
06:26Russia is hard at work to try to weaken our democracies and chip away at our freedom.
06:31And it is not alone.
06:32It has China, North Korea and Iran by its side.

06:53The European Commission presented this Wednesday an action plan to prevent and detect cyber
06:59attacks quicker.
07:00In 2023, there were 309 cyber security incidents in health centers in the EU, a growing risk
07:08for both patients and hospitals.
07:10European Health Commissioner Oliver Varely believes that hospitals should invest in cyber
07:15security as much as in medical equipment.
07:19Do not overlook that part.
07:22We understand that the health care institutions are more focused on organizing the health
07:29care they provide for the patients, but this is part and parcel of it.
07:33Despite the economic impact, which is estimated at an average of 300,000 euros in major incidents,
07:40Brussels has so far made no provision for financial support for medical institutions.
07:46According to the European Cyber Security Agency, the greatest risks include the theft of patient
07:52data or the disruption of health care services.
08:04Poland, who has taken over the EU Council presidency, has named security as one of its
08:10key priorities.
08:11But for Warsaw, security has many faces.
08:15In an interview with Euronews, the Minister for European Affairs Adam SzΕopka explained
08:20that one aspect of security is Europe being independent from Russia in terms of energy.
08:45Europe has managed to overall reduce its energy dependence from Russia.
08:57Some countries such as Hungary, Slovakia or Austria have been less enthusiastic.
09:02These nations could pose a challenge for Warsaw.
09:05When it comes to security, Warsaw has also said it's willing to participate in EU cooperation
09:12including the joint purchase of ammunition and cooperating in strengthening critical
09:17infrastructure.
09:33For EU High Representative Kaja Kalas, NATO and the EU complement each other when it comes
09:38to ensuring Europe's security.
09:41We have complementary roles.
09:43I mean, NATO is dealing with the military issues, the military planning for defence.
09:51But Europe, we deal with European defence industry, we deal with European defence as
09:58whole because we also have countries that are not in NATO.
10:01You didn't elaborate again.
10:02You didn't rule out military coercion.
10:05Kalas added that Europe's security challenges have only become more complicated and now
10:11involve hybrid threats against energy and food security as well as cyber attacks.

10:38Local media says the individuals were titushkis, a term used to describe hired thugs usually
10:44in service of government or political groups.
10:47Demonstrators chanted, blew whistles and waved Georgian and EU flags side by side.

11:35and eventually astronauts to orbit and also the moon.
