00:00What others call a hardship or a curse, the Burton brothers call a blessing.
00:07There was something special about both of them from the very first time I got to hold them.
00:14I knew something was off as a mother.
00:19They were diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.
00:23As long as I can remember, I knew that I had a disease and that I wasn't supposed to live as long as everybody else.
00:30Having a perception of your own mortality at a young age could become your superpower.
00:37But last year, the Medford Reggae Band in Dubious, they were forced to watch lead singer Evan Burton fight a series of lung infections.
00:44He has an oxygen tank on stage, he's sneaking it.
00:47Above all, he wanted to give his gift, even though he was suffering greatly.
00:51The tour, we had to go to the hospital and they essentially wouldn't let him leave.
00:56But it was Evan that needed a double lung transplant to survive.
01:00Everything was just flattened, you know.
01:02In order for this miracle to happen, there was another family that was really suffering.
01:07It's one thing hearing that your child was shot, but it's another when you're looking at him in a bed on life support.
01:17Miss Jackson, I ran a test on your son and I'm sorry, but your son is deceased. He's brain dead.
01:23You know, God just said it. You know, donate his organs.
01:32I think being that close to your own demise opens your eyes to whatever God is.
01:42You realize how precious every little second of life is.
01:48He just exploded after the transplant.
01:52It was like watching a kid in a candy store be able to have everything they want.
01:57It wasn't borrowed time anymore.
01:59The odd thing was, you know, after the transplant, as he started to get well, my health started to deteriorate.
02:08Why is this happening to us? Why are there so many physical roadblocks between us and our success?
02:15They just have an absolute knowingness of who they are and where they come from.
02:27They give people words to deal with life.
02:31It's just amazing. There's so many dubious lyrics that you can live your life by.
02:36Like, I learned everything from them, and I still do.
02:45Our music is intended to be medicine.
02:48It's like you can speak a word for the intention of hurting someone or judging someone.
02:54You can also speak a word for the intention of helping someone.
03:00Their music has helped me find my purpose.
03:06I was like, these guys just, they seem to have this message that hits so, so deep.
03:10They just exude this positivity and confidence and just, like, this joy in them all the time.
