00:00Hello, my name is Gianluca Mattarese. I'm the director of the film Gen, the film will
00:19premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2025 in the world competition. There's a place
00:25here in Milan, a unique place, where men and women dream of having a child, and also men
00:31and women dream of aligning their assigned gender with their gender identity. It happens
00:38here in a hospital in Milan, where two services are combined in one only service, specialized
00:46into gender transition assistance and infertility treatment assistance. And these services are
00:52provided by the National Public Health System, completely free of charge. Every day, the head
00:59of the department, Maurizio Bini, a highly erudite, slightly histrionic and sometimes politically
01:06incorrect doctor, tries to navigate between the contradictions of what bodies desire and taboos
01:13forbid. His struggle, however, goes beyond his patients. It is also about keeping a public
01:19service alive in a system increasingly dominated by market forces and political restrictions.
01:26And this struggle is unfolding at the pivotal moment, the final chapter of his career. Together
01:33with co-author Donatella Della Ratta, we had the privilege to witness this world at close. Our film
01:40is set precisely in that space, in the delicate, often tense interactions between doctor and
01:46patient. It's a space between the legal and administrative apparatus of the public health
01:52system and the immense diversity of human experiences, vulnerabilities and desires. This is
01:59not a film about politics and medicine. This is a film about how intimacy becomes political. Thank
02:06you for giving us the opportunity to share this film. I hope you will find what we have found
02:12in the hospital, a reflection of resilience,
02:16empathy, humanity and the courage to fight for your dreams. Enjoy the film.
02:42you
