Dozens of blocks of the scenic Pacific Palisades area have been flattened to smouldering rubble while in neighbouring Malibu, blackened palm strands were all that was left above debris where oceanfront homes once stood.

00:00Officials in California say the death toll from massive wildfires burning in and around
00:07Los Angeles has risen to 11.
00:10And the tally of homes and other buildings destroyed stands at more than 10,000.
00:14L.A. County Sheriff Robert G. Luna said around 153,000 residents are now under evacuation
00:22orders.
00:23He also said a nighttime curfew is in place covering the Palisades and Eaton fire areas
00:28and that officers are patrolling to prevent looting.
00:32He said more than 57,000 structures remain at risk.
00:36Mayor Karen Bass said Los Angeles is preparing for more high winds forecast for next week.
00:42The blazes started on Tuesday, powered by gusts from the Santa Ana winds which followed
00:47an exceptionally dry period.
00:51Officials say investigations into how the fires first broke out are still ongoing.
