00:07This painting is worth millions of dollars. I don't even know it's there.
00:13I wanted to do something for the women's house of detention on Rikers Island.
00:19Young, young, young women were going to prison.
00:22One girl said, I want to see a road leading out of here.
00:27The painting is called For the Women's House.
00:29Almost every single profession in that painting was not open to women in 1971.
00:34These are visual affirmations of what women are capable of when they're supported.
00:40This is hope right on the doorstep of profound hopelessness.
00:44I had an opportunity to go back into the prison where I was incarcerated
00:48and connect with people in a way that I wish someone was able to connect with me.
00:52Anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.
00:55Art making was my outlet to reimagine my own self.
00:59As a person who was incarcerated 20 years and an artist,
01:02I love the idea of creating something for women to be more seen.
01:07In our prison, the mirrors will actually fall.
01:09We're not going to allow you to see yourself in full.
01:12And then when incarcerated people leave.
01:14They struggle with identity.
01:16That day I happened to look at the wall and I see nothing.
01:19I wonder what happened to the painting.
01:21Oh my God, they painted over it.
01:24Someone painted the painting.
01:26You better do something quick.
01:28I called the warden.
01:30She said, we don't have time to worry about a painting.
01:32Do they have a right to continue to add it?
01:35What's going to happen when the wrecking balls come through
01:37and this beautiful piece of art is gone?
01:40Art is disruptive. Art disrupts lazy thinking.
01:43These are among the most important paintings of the 20th century.
01:47History had to catch up with faith.
01:48You're no longer just doing it for you.
01:50Art gives us permission to imagine a world beyond what currently exists.
01:56They want these women following for the women's house out of there.
