00:00Experts have lauded KLIA's new QR code immigration clearance system, but they say more auto gates
00:08are needed at all national entry points to speed up the process of admitting visitors
00:13into the country.
00:15Federation of ASEAN Travel Associations President Tan Kok Liang told FMT the national focus
00:21should be on a seamless clearance experience for international tourists at all entry points.
00:27He said such an experience would depend on the introduction of many more automated gates
00:31and immigration counters, adding that resources should be focused on cutting down long queues
00:37for tourists at all Malaysian airports as the country prepares for Visit Malaysia 2026.
00:43Tan's comments follow the system's recent trial implementation at 40 special lanes set
00:49up at the arrival and departure halls of KLIA Terminal 1 and 2, where Malaysians can clear
00:55immigration in 5-7 seconds, compared to 15-25 seconds with conventional auto gates.
01:02Meanwhile, Immigration Services Union of Peninsular Malaysia President Ajit Singh Gurbak Singh
01:08also called for an increase in auto gates at all airports, but recommended that more
01:13officers should also be present to clear visitor lines, especially during peak season.
01:19He said while the QR code system is a commendable move, a multi-layered approach that combines
01:24technology, infrastructure improvements and workforce management is important to overcome
01:30congestion at KLIA.
01:32Ajit also said if the QR code were to be expanded to include international visitors, it may
01:38not be enough to verify their identities, adding that biometric verification was essential
01:44to reduce error and fraud.
