00:00He's been in power for a decade now.
00:02Why has Trudeau decided to resign now, do you think?
00:05Well, thanks for having me.
00:06I think that the writing was on the wall.
00:08People, including myself and others,
00:09have been calling for this for the better part of a year now.
00:13Frankly, it should have been done last summer.
00:15But in the fall and in the winter,
00:16the prime minister lost the support of his caucus,
00:19of his MPs, and of his party.
00:21And it just became extremely clear to everyone,
00:24including himself and his office, that it was time to go.
00:28The Canadian public has soured,
00:30not necessarily on the Liberal Party,
00:32but certainly on this prime minister.
00:34He is extremely unpopular.
00:36He is disliked across the political spectrum.
00:39And it became very evident that if he were to lead the party
00:43into the next general election,
00:44which is scheduled for this year,
00:46that the Liberal Party,
00:47which historically has been considered
00:49the natural governing party in Canada,
00:51it's been in power for many years,
00:53would get completely wiped out.
00:55They would get completely decimated.
00:57They might not even exist as a political party.
00:59That's how unpopular he was.
01:01So he saw the writing on the wall,
01:02and I think he tried to take control of this
01:04and wanted to step down,
01:06give the party the chance to elect a new leader
01:08and go forward in this election
01:10and to negotiate with Donald Trump
01:12with a fresh face and a fresh leader.
01:14And it was necessary at this point.
