00:00Outgoing Chief Justice Temku Maimun Tuan Mat insisted that under her leadership, the judiciary had always strived to uphold the rule of law.

00:09She said that during her tenure as the top judge, judicial panels had worked to deliver decisions they firmly believed to be correct based on the law and facts,

00:18despite the heated political overtones and undertones that clothed some of the cases.

00:24She said this alone should dispel any baseless notion that she had ever been partial to any particular prime minister or political party.

00:32Separately, she said anyone who interferes with the independent functions of the Judicial Appointments Commission would be committing a crime.

00:40She said Section 34 of the JAC Act 2009 states that a person found guilty of influencing or attempting to influence the JAC

00:49would be liable to a fine not exceeding RM100,000, imprisonment of not more than two years, or both.

00:57She said no one besides the JAC and the prime minister can recommend candidates for appointment to post in the superior courts.

01:04She said no person, whether it be the president of the Malaysian Bar, advocates or solicitors, political parties, the attorney general,

01:12or any other person has any business recommending names to the prime minister for appointment.
