00:00The Simpsons writers thought they'd be fired over what turned out to be one of the greatest
00:04episodes ever.
00:05In a recent interview with The Guardian, which coincided with the show's 35th anniversary,
00:10longtime Simpsons writer Al Jean revealed that nobody involved with the show in its
00:13early years had any idea that they were making a future comedy classic.
00:17He said,
00:18Having been there during the golden era, I'll just say it didn't feel like it at the time.
00:23As evidence of this disconnect, Jean recalled how the now-classic episode, Homer at the
00:27Bat, which is full of cameos from baseball superstars, didn't get the warmest reception
00:31at first.
00:32He said,
00:33We had two script reads, that was the second, and it was dead silent.
00:37It was the worst read ever.
00:39Mike Reese and I looked at each other like, we're gonna get fired.
00:43That was Jean's co-showrunner at the time.
00:44Yeah, that didn't happen.
00:46Homer at the Bat was so good that it actually managed to beat both the Winter Olympics and
00:51The Cosby Show on the night that it aired.
00:54It went on to not only become a beloved episode of The Simpsons, but also a fixture in the
00:59world of professional baseball.
01:01As a result of this one episode, Homer Simpson was inducted into the National Baseball Hall
01:05of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
01:07The writer of Homer at the Bat, the famously reclusive John Schwarzwalder, recently took
01:11to social media to mark The Simpsons' anniversary.
01:15He similarly conveyed that nobody making The Simpsons in its early seasons had any idea
01:19that it would still be on the air three and a half decades later.
