00:00A former WWE star wants you to know they weren't fired, the real reason for WWE's Netflix
00:06debut Raw booking, AEW has loads of money, which they're choosing to invest in tonally
00:12jarring new theme music, and more.
00:14I'm Oli Davis, you're always defending Jam That Jampion, and I welcome all and any
00:21challengers.
00:22And this is the WrestleTalk News.
00:28With all the excitement and adverts every time you log into Netflix for Raw's streaming
00:32service debut on Monday, New Japan's biggest show of the year, WrestleKingdom, has kind
00:37of been lost in the shuffle.
00:39Because it's tomorrow.
00:41Even I keep forgetting that.
00:43And then, the day after that, on Sunday morning, afternoon or evening, depending where in the
00:48world you live, there is AEW's joint follow-up show with New Japan, WrestleDynasty, which
00:53will see Kenny by-god Omega's first in-ring match since beating Ethan Page on the 5th
00:59December episode of Collision in 2023.
01:03Ethan Page has been NXT Champion since then.
01:05Omega will be wrestling New Japan's Gabe Kidd on the show, who has already publicly
01:09called out AEW for not promoting WrestleDynasty more in advance.
01:13And now, in an interview with Fightful, he's somehow managed to call out the world.
01:18Now Kidd uses quite a few cuss words here, so I've replaced all the F-words with the
01:23great Terry Funk.
01:24FUNK ANYONE WHO IS NEXT UP.
01:27FUNK KENNY OMEGA.
01:28FUNK HIS CO-WORKERS.
01:30FUNK HIS BOSS.
01:31NOT EVEN HIS BOSS, HIS CO-FOUNDER.
01:33FUNK ALL OF THEM.
01:34FUNK THE GUY WHO IS THE WWE CHAMPION.
01:37FUNK ALL OF THEM.
01:38FUNK EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.
01:40I'M THE ONE UP IN IT.
01:41IT'S MY YEAR THIS YEAR.
01:43EVERYONE LIKES TO SAY THAT, THEN THEY DON'T DO SHAMELESS.
01:46THEY WIN A LITTLE TAG TITLE ON THE INDIES.
01:48THIS IS MY YEAR.
01:49SHUT YOUR FUNKING MOUTH.
01:51THIS IS MY YEAR.
01:53FUNK TONY KHAN AS WELL, LITTLE BITCH.
01:55FUNK YOU.
01:56CRY MORE, PUSSY.
01:58ALL OF YOU.
01:59FUNK HIM.
02:00FUNK ME, HE'S ANGRY.
02:01Perhaps it's because, for, like, the ninth year in a row, New Japan is letting everyone's
02:07contracts expire again.
02:08Back at the start of 2016, WWE signed four of New Japan's top stars, AJ Styles, Luke
02:14Gallows and Karl Anderson, and Shinsuke Nakamura, all in one go.
02:18Because New Japan contracts typically run from January to January.
02:22But don't worry, New Japan learned from this, and quickly moved away from having multiple
02:26high profile contracts expire all at the same time.
02:30In the same month, WWE runs a pay-per-view that is great for surprise entrants.
02:34Oh wait, no, I must've misread that.
02:37I meant THEY STILL HAVEN'T CHANGED ANYTHING NINE YEARS LATER.
02:41Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks, Cody Rhodes and Hangman Page all left together at the
02:45same time in 2019 to start AEW because their contracts expired in January, and Will Ospreay
02:50and Kazuchika Okada both left at the start of 2024 with the same timing.
02:55And this year, not only do TJP, one half of the IWGP Junior Tag Team Champions Kevin Knight
03:00and the FUNKING aforementioned Gabe Kidd all have their contracts up right about now, Fightful
03:06have now added that Dave Finlay, the current IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion and leader
03:12of Kidd's War Dogs faction, also has their deal running out.
03:17Apparently there are a huge number of contracts upping New Japan soon, but Fightful's sources
03:23expect Finlay to remain with the company, and they'll start negotiations soon.
03:27How about do that last year, New Japan?
03:29But arguably the most important New Japan contract of all has already run out.
03:35Since 2014, New Japan has been airing in the United States on AXS TV.
03:39This was a precursor to the promotion's boom in popularity.
03:43For the first time, they invested in consistent English language commentary, with announcers
03:47like Mauro Ranallo, Josh Barnett, Jim Ross, Kevin Kelly and Don Callis making what was
03:52widely considered to be the best wrestling in the world accessible to the English speaking
03:57nations and, in a pre-AEW industry, arguably becoming the No. 2 promotion to a very poorly
04:05booked WWE.
04:06New Japan left AXS in 2019, when the station was bought by Anthem Sports & Entertainment,
04:11who were the owners of TNA, which back then was called IMPACT.
04:14They pretty much bought the network, so IMPACT had a place to air.
04:18New Japan returned to AXS in 2022, when both sides agreed to a new deal, which also started
04:23a new relationship with TNA.
04:25But following the Wrestling Observer's report that New Japan was now finished on AXS, Post
04:29Wrestling have received the following statement from the station.
04:33We will not be airing New Japan Pro Wrestling for the foreseeable future.
04:36Our agreement expired at the end of 2024, and we do not comment on the state of current
04:42or future agreements.
04:44This comes at the same time as TNA's working relationship with New Japan also seems to
04:48have ended.
04:49This time last year, the start of 2024, TNA and New Japan were going so far to sign wrestlers
04:54like Kushida to joint contracts, a way to band together and compete with the bigger
04:58WWE and AEW for talent.
05:01But then Anthem got rid of TNA's President Scott D'Amore, who was behind ideas like
05:06that, and the promotion got in a working relationship with WWE.
05:09Which was kind of fun in the short term, but will likely end with WWE just taking TNA's
05:14top talent, like Jordan Grace and Joe Hendry.
05:16With the WWE relationship, TNA's partnership with New Japan, who are affiliated with AEW,
05:22was never going to last.
05:24Do you long for the glory days of TNA, back when Kevin Nash was genuinely the funniest
05:29thing in wrestling, and Road Dogg and Billy Gunn tried to call out Vince McMahon, Triple
05:33H and Shawn Michaels for an actual shoot fight?
05:36Then you'll love our 20 hour long, 7 episode series on TNA's Samoa Joe vs Kurt Angle
05:43rivalry from 2006 to 2008.
05:46The whole thing is available to watch right now on Patreon.com forward slash WrestleTalk,
05:50which coincidentally is the best way to support us here.
05:54Head to Patreon.com forward slash WrestleTalk for that, and loads more exclusive WrestleTalk
05:58videos like the ongoing Monday Night War series right now between me and Luke.
06:03No disrespect, WrestleKingdom and or Dynasty, but the biggest wrestling event of January
06:07is WWE Raw's debut on Netflix this coming Monday.
06:11The card currently has Roman Reigns vs Solo Sakoa for the Tribal Chiefdom's Oola Fala,
06:16Liv Morgan defending and most likely losing her Women's World Championship against Rhea
06:20Ripley, Drew McIntyre vs Jey Uso and CM Punk vs Seth Rollins.
06:25That's four pre-announced matches for a reported three hour show.
06:29It will also likely include several big in-ring segments, like an appearance from Cody Rhodes,
06:34something from John Cena, and Rock the Dwayne Johnson talking about how Red One was actually
06:38a success.
06:39Yes, it bombed at the box office, but look at the streaming minutes on Amazon Prime.
06:43Look at those rock hard verticals, there's multiple of them.
06:47Some voters are reporting that WWE also originally planned for the final of the Women's Intercontinental
06:52title tournament to take place on the Netflix debut, but it has now been moved to a later
06:57episode.
06:58In order for the match to not get lost in the shuffle, it seems like WWE wants to get
07:03this title off and running in a big way, and felt as though having it mixed in with a show
07:07the size of Netflix's premiere would not do that justice.
07:10Instead, the final of Dakota Kai and Lyra Valkyria, which will crown the inaugural Women's
07:15Intercontinental Champion, will take place on the second Netflix Raw episode on January
07:2013th.
07:21With the Royal Rumble weirdly taking place in February this year, WWE appear to be planning
07:26a stacked road to the Road to WrestleMania.
07:29One rumoured name to return between Monday's Netflix debut and the PLA is Becky Lynch,
07:34with WrestleVotes reporting Lynch's impending return will factor heavily into high level
07:39WrestleMania plans as the Road to Las Vegas begins.
07:42And Fightful Select is denying a rumour that John Cena's WWE return will be a swerve
07:47while he'll turn heel for his retirement year.
07:50Instead, WWE have planned very heavily to factor Cena into major plans throughout 2025.
07:56PWInsider claims this will involve Cena challenging Cody for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania
08:0241, but it's also rumoured Cena could face Logan Paul there instead.
08:06Alexa Bliss has also teased her return, posting a picture of her walking out on a WWE entrance
08:12She's apparently been cleared to return for some time.
08:14Backstage name Bruce Prichard, who is the company's Executive Director for Creative
08:18Writing and Television, is also expected to return at tonight's episode of SmackDown.
08:23Prichard has been on leave since last November for family and health reasons.
08:27And onscreen, there's meant to be a soft Super Shake-Up mini-draft transfer portal
08:31to freshen up the Raw and SmackDown rosters for the New Year.
08:34We'll have to wait and see what that means for the wrestlers, but PWInsider is already
08:38reporting the ring announcers will swap, with Lillian Garcia moving to SmackDown and
08:42Alicia Taylor going to Raw from the January 6th show.
08:46This further implies Raw will be the A-Show again, with Michael Cole and Pat McAfee being
08:50the brand's new commentators, while Joe Tessitore, Wade Barrett and Corey Graves will
08:54be a three-man booth on SmackDown.
08:56But missing in all of this, sadly, is Baron Corbin, who announced on the 1st November
09:02That's all she wrote, folks.
09:03Peace sign emoji.
09:04It's been real, and I appreciate everyone who supported me.
09:08That was at the same time PWInsider reported WWE was releasing several wrestlers, which
09:13would also end up including Indi Hartwell and Tegan Nox.
09:17But now Corbin, whose real name is Thomas Pestock, has started the new year by announcing
09:21he is a free agent, and he wasn't fired from WWE.
09:26I'm officially no longer under contract since I was not fired.
09:30I was told they were not extending.
09:32So if you're making a horror movie, let me know.
09:34Ha ha ha ha.
09:35New year.
09:36No contract.
09:37Let's see what we can create.
09:38He then responded to someone who called him a midcarder.
09:41Spent almost three years in the main event every night, dickhead.
09:44Or chalk that up as a draw.
09:46Those three years of Corbin in the main event were some of the worst years ever for WWE.
09:50He did finish on a great run with Brom Breaker in NXT, though.
09:53Corbin vs Corbin's situation is an important distinction to make.
09:57If Baron was released at the start of December, his 90-day non-compete clause would be in
10:02play, meaning he couldn't wrestle until February 1st.
10:05But because his contract simply wasn't renewed or extended, he can wrestle anywhere as soon
10:09as it's up.
10:10Which appears to have been on New Year's Day.
10:13Which makes it very interesting that Corbin was reportedly backstage at AEW's World's
10:18End pay-per-view last Saturday.
10:20AEW has a casino gauntlet match planned for next week's Dynamite, a stipulation perfect
10:25for shock debuts.
10:26And that the promotion currently has loads of money.
10:31The Wrestling Observer is reporting that now AEW's new media rights deal with Warner Bros
10:35Discovery is underway, which includes Dynamite now being simulcast on their max streaming
10:40platform.
10:41The promotion is receiving $3.6 million a week.
10:46As a result, there is expected to be a lot more money being spent and reinvested into
10:50the shows.
10:51This could be why AEW have oddly chosen the 1982 Pointer Sisters song I'm So Excited
10:56for Dynamite's opening new theme, and that they're bringing back Elton John's 1973
11:01hit Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting for Collision.
11:03AEW have also brilliantly used Guns N' Roses licensed tracks for video packages recently.
11:08Remember that 20 hour, 7 episode epic series of me and Luke reviewing Samoa Joe and Kurt
11:13Angle's rivalry from TNA I mentioned earlier?
11:15Well you can actually watch the first 4 hours of it for free by clicking the link in the
11:20video description below right now.
11:22Here's a clip.
11:46Yeah, double down.
11:47Yeah, so it definitely wasn't a kip-up, but here he goes.
11:53Oh!
11:54And now the referee comes over to him to help him up.
11:59And that's the hot tag.
12:01Yeah.
12:02So, um, what does Shawn Michaels famously do?
12:04Kip-up.
12:05Yeah.
12:06Oh, so it's intentional!
12:07It's an intentional.
12:08It's a shot at what Shawn Michaels does.
12:11Oh.
12:12Oh, that's so lame.
12:16I don't know what's worse, that they did it, or that I got confused by it.
12:22Because now you say it, of course.
12:24Yeah, I mean, all the best shots and references are ones that you have to explain.
12:29The ones that look like you're bad at your job.
12:32Yeah.
