A 42-year-old man has been fined RM10,000 in default six months' jail by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court for insulting the royal institution on Instagram three years ago.

Tan Yong Hua, a p-hailing rider, pleaded guilty after the charge was read out to him in Bahasa Malaysia before judge Siti Aminah Ghazali on Friday (Jan 3).

00:25According to the charge sheet, Tan had used the Instagram profile OG Bad Boy Terry T to
00:31make an offensive posting with the intention to offend others between November 6 and 7,
00:382021.
00:39The posting was read at a condominium in Jalan Taman, Uthant, on November 7 that year.
00:46The charge under Section 233, Subsection 1A of the Communications and Multimedia Act,
00:521998, carries a maximum fine of 50,000 ringgit or imprisonment of up to one year or both
00:58if found guilty, and 1,000 ringgit each day the offence continues after conviction.
01:04Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Ahmad Hijra, Wan Abdullah sought a deterrent sentence to
01:10serve as a lesson for the accused and the public not to touch on the 3R issues when
01:16using social media where comments can be read by the public and cause unrest.
01:21Tan, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a lenient sentence.
01:27He told the judge that he promised not to repeat the offence and sought forgiveness.
01:32He also said that he injured his left shoulder and does not have a stable job.
01:37The court ordered Tan to serve six months in jail if he fails to pay the fine.
