At the LA Auto Show 2024, the future of automotive innovation was on full display with an array of futuristic concept cars and custom vehicles. Chrysler wowed the crowd with the Halcyon, an electric car concept that looks like it belongs in a sci-fi movie, highlighting the brand's pioneering spirit in electrification as the R&D division of parent company Stellantis. Hyundai's Initium, a rugged fuel cell vehicle, broke the mold by promising off-road adventures in the FCEV category, while Tesla's much-anticipated Cybercab made a surprise appearance, underscoring the fierce competition in the electric vehicle market.
The show also celebrated the vibrant car culture of Southern California, where the passion for custom cars runs deep. The all-electric Dodge Charger, blending iconic design with cutting-edge technology, was a standout, promising the same thrilling performance as its legendary predecessors, but with an all-new electric powertrain. Attendees were also treated to innovative designs like the sporty Genesis GV60 Magma, and customized versions of the Toyota Land Cruiser built to cater to a rugged, off-road adventuring lifestyle.
From Kia's record-setting EV9 to the brand-new Hyundai Ioniq 9, attendees had the opportunity to get behind the wheel and feel the future of driving. The LA Auto Show 2024 was a testament to the industry's innovation and a preview of what's to come in the world of automobiles and auto shows across America.

00:00We are in the West Coast Customs Hall at the L.A. Auto Show.
00:04And customs, as well as concepts, are the soul of this show.
00:15So at the L.A. Auto Show, you'll see more concept cars
00:18than we have seen at auto shows in years.
00:21It's really fun to see what the future is going to look like in cars.
00:25And that's something that not every auto show gets,
00:27but they definitely have that at the L.A. Auto Show.
00:31As you walk through the L.A. Auto Show and you walk by Chrysler,
00:34not a brand that's top of mind anymore.
00:37And then you see the Halcyon, and it's this really futuristic,
00:42almost spaceship-like electric car.
00:44And you think, wow, that's a Chrysler?
00:47But Chrysler has been the R&D lab for electrification
00:51for all of the parent companies, Stellantis.
00:53So when we see electric cars coming from Ram
00:57and from Jeep and from Dodge,
00:59a lot of that technology was first hammered out at Chrysler.
01:04One of the concepts that you'll see at the L.A. Auto Show
01:06is the Inidium from Hyundai.
01:08And that is a fuel cell vehicle,
01:10but it also looks really rugged and off-road ready.
01:15In the past, we've thought of fuel cell vehicles
01:17as really easy street drivers.
01:19We haven't thought of them as off-roaders,
01:21but that's where Hyundai's thinking is,
01:24is that the Inidium is going to be able to conquer
01:26all sorts of terrain with fuel cell power
01:29rather than electric or gas.
01:31Another important role for concepts
01:33is to roll out an idea that's going to take several years
01:37to get to market and allow consumers
01:40to build some anticipation for that.
01:42And that's what we've seen
01:43in the Magma concept from Genesis.
01:46So Genesis rolled this out a couple of years ago,
01:48a very high-energy performance trim line
01:51for all of its vehicles.
01:53You'll see the Genesis GV60,
01:55which is an all-electric compact SUV
01:58dressed in a very bright orange, or Magma.
02:01It has a lot of power.
02:02It promises to be a lot of fun to drive
02:05when it comes to market, which it will.
02:07But you'll also see Magma versions
02:10of their other SUVs and cars in the future,
02:13and they're just setting it up for anticipation right now.
02:17One of the things that you'll see at the L.A. Auto Show
02:19that we're not used to seeing at auto shows is Tesla.
02:23So you see all their models.
02:24They brought up the Cybertruck,
02:26which has been very busy all day,
02:27and they brought the Cybercab.
02:30It makes sense for Tesla to be here
02:32because California is sort of the epicenter
02:34of electric cars,
02:35and this is a really important market for them.
02:37But also, their marketplace of electric driving
02:41is getting very competitive.
02:43So we may see Tesla show up at more auto shows
02:46and more driving experiences in the future
02:48as they get more competitive.
02:55Behind us is one of the most popular exhibits
02:57at the L.A. Auto Show.
02:59It is the all-electric Dodge Charger.
03:02It has all of the iconic design that we know and love
03:06from all the original Heritage Dodge Chargers,
03:09as well as Dodge Chargers from recent years.
03:13It'll have all the newest technology
03:15that Dodge is rolling out.
03:16It'll have incredible horsepower.
03:18It's going to do everything that the Hellcat did,
03:22even that loud, rumbling engine noise
03:25when it hits the market early 2025.
03:31So we got our first look at this car at the L.A. Auto Show.
03:35This is something people have been waiting for for some time.
03:38In fact, Hyundai's partner company, Kia,
03:41rolled out the EV9 a couple of years ago.
03:44It's been on the market for about a year and a half,
03:46and it is setting sales records for Kia.
03:49Hyundai is hoping for the same magic with the IONIQ 9.
03:53If you're a visitor at the L.A. Auto Show
03:55and later this year at other auto shows,
03:58the IONIQ 9 will be available for test drives
04:01on the EV test track.
04:05Another great thing to see at the L.A. Auto Show
04:07and at other auto shows where Toyota is
04:10are these concepts based on actual cars.
04:13So this is a Toyota Land Cruiser
04:15that the Calti Design Center took and customized
04:18to turn it into something that is a dream car
04:21for people who love off-roading.
04:23And this is really special, so is the other one,
04:26which is customized clearly for surf life.
04:29But will we see these things come to life
04:31in the modified world of Toyotas?
04:33Well, we might just.
04:36If you walk around the L.A. Auto Show,
04:37you will also see a lot of SUVs and pickup trucks
04:41that have rooftop tents.
04:43That's been a huge trend over the last few years.
04:46Not only outfitters offering tents
04:49that are fitted to trucks and SUVs,
04:51but also car makers who are partnering
04:54with makers of rooftop gear.
04:57It's comfortable and it's also secure
04:59because car makers have worked with these outfitters
05:01to make sure that these things are a perfect fit.
05:05Kia is known for building these incredible concepts
05:09and then actually building the car.
05:11Now, I'm not sure we're actually gonna see this,
05:13but my guess is we will see something like this.
05:16This is called the Weekender.
05:17And this is taking that whole idea
05:19of sort of van life or camping life
05:22and putting it into an adventure vehicle
05:25that can go anywhere, take you anywhere, anytime you want.
05:28In fact, Kia took a lot of these ideas
05:31and put it into the EV9.
05:33They call it the Adventurer trim.
05:35That's not out on the market yet, but we think it will be.
05:38And what that'll allow people to do
05:40is have that off-road adventure with all-electric driving.
05:44Think about driving through the woods past that moose
05:48and not disturbing it because your car is perfectly silent.
05:57Custom vehicles are something that we see a lot of
05:59in Southern California.
06:00We don't necessarily see as many of them
06:03in the rest of the world,
06:04but they're a fundamental part of life
06:06in Southern California.
06:07We're in the Hall of West Coast Customs
06:09and you see everything from really special colors
06:13and treatments to cars that we recognize,
06:15but that have been modified.
06:17But these are works of art on wheels.
06:19In addition to the custom models that we've seen
06:21and the concepts that we've seen,
06:23what's really on display at the LA Auto Show
06:26is a passion for cars.
06:27Cars are really important to the lifestyle
06:30that people lead in Southern California.
06:32In the car world, the LA Auto Show
06:34is always the early predictor
06:36of what we're gonna see everywhere else.
06:38The auto world is growing in terms of its offerings
06:41and the different lifestyle choices
06:43that it offers people.
06:44And that's what you're gonna see at every auto show,
06:46but especially at the LA Auto Show.
