Greg Bedard returns for a solo episode to air out his grievances after the Patriots embarrassed themselves in a 40-7 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Chargers. He describes all of the ways that things are going wrong, and why this is an indictment on Jerod Mayo more than anyone else.

00:00This is the Gregg Bedard Patriots Podcast with Nick Cavins.
00:10Everybody, welcome into the Gregg Bedard Patriots Podcast.
00:14It is New Year's Eve.
00:17I wanted to get this out to you guys.
00:20So let's get to it.
00:22I don't think this is going to be a pleasant podcast.
00:25So let me first say Happy New Year.
00:29Happy Holidays to you all.

01:02What time is it?
01:03Game time.
01:04And also, Noterno Home Services is my home comfort company.
01:08If you're looking for a team that puts you first, visit noternohome.com slash bedard.
01:13That's N-O-T-T-U-R-N-O home dot com slash bedard for 10% off your next service.
01:20Could save you up to $1,000.
01:22Would really appreciate if you guys go on that website.
01:27Again, that's N-O-T-T-U-R-N-O home dot com slash bedard.
01:32That will help me, the pod, BSJ out immensely.
01:37Okay.
01:39So I'm going to sort of set the stage here.
01:43So I don't know how many of you guys listened, but I was on Felder and Maz with Saron, Leroy, and Nick.
01:52On Monday.
01:55Agreed to do it that day instead of my normal Tuesday because the Bruins and Celtics both played.
02:01Celtics are playing right now.
02:02Watched the Bruins lose earlier.
02:05So it was going to be messy as far as timing.
02:08I figured, oh, the Patriots are playing Saturday.
02:10I'll get the film on Sunday.
02:12I normally get it the day after a game.
02:15I'll be primed and ready.
02:17That did not happen this week.
02:20I get my film from sort of a black market type thing where I really love it because I get all of the offensive plays in one file, all the defense, special teams in one file.
02:33And it's much easier for me to navigate.
02:37Did not get the film this week until I think Monday afternoon.
02:44And I tried to make do with the NFL product.
02:47I really hate it.
02:48I don't get a big enough screen and my keyboard shortcuts don't really work.
02:54It's a tough process.
02:57And so I watched as much as I could to get prepared for the radio.
03:01But, of course, for you guys, for BSJ, I wanted to make sure that I did my normal deep dive on the film before coming to any grand conclusions.
03:14And also another thing, I don't usually like to watch the film and then pod or go on Felder and Maz because I have, especially if the film's bad, I have a tendency to be grumpy and take it out on the Patriots and everybody else.
03:35But I had to do it in this case.
03:38And so this is going to be pretty rough.
03:41So with that said, after watching the film against the Chargers, how do I say this?
03:51I'm done with this team for this year.
03:53I mean, I'm still going to do my work.
03:55I'm going to still be at the game on Sunday.
03:58But as far as taking anything positive out of this year, that's not happening.
04:09What we saw on Saturday against the Chargers was an absolutely pathetic professional football product.
04:16In fact, it was not a professional football product.
04:19It was as it was about as bad as you get.
04:27I just don't I just don't think the Patriots are I just they're no longer a professional football outfit to me.
04:36What has transpired this season started off great with the Bengals.
04:41It's had its moments at times, including the Buffalo game.
04:48You know, just last week, I do think that was a lot of the bills, just not a big going through a gauntlet and playing a team that they knew was pathetic.
04:58And they just sort of went through the motions, especially Josh Allen.
05:01And, you know, sort of slept walk to open the game.
05:04Patriots took advantage.
05:05That's good for them.
05:07But to go from that to what they put on the field, the home field in front of the home fans on Saturday against a, you know, a Chargers team.
05:17That's I mean, they're good.
05:19They're going to go to the playoffs.
05:20Probably that might do some damage, but they're certainly not a great football team.
05:27But for what the Patriots for them to put what they did on that field was flat out embarrassing.
05:33And they were entitled to get booed off the field.
05:37Mayo was entitled to hear fire Mayo chants.
05:43You know, it was it was that bad.
05:46So as far as what I mean about the team and what they put out there, I do not blame the players.
05:56And also, this wasn't just about talent.
05:59I mean.
06:01Forty to seven is a combination of one team being better than the other.
06:06And I don't think the Chargers have great talent.
06:08They have some, you know, Derwin James, Justin Herbert's really good.
06:11But, you know, Drake May has the ability to play up to him.
06:17I don't think their receivers are tight ends or any good.
06:20I don't think J.K.
06:21Dobbins just coming back.
06:23He didn't skip a beat.
06:24I don't think he's that great.
06:26They don't run the ball well.
06:27I don't think the offensive line is that great, especially the three interior spots.
06:31The tackles are good.
06:33Slater and Joe Alt.
06:36Alt's still a rookie.
06:38You know, I don't think he's he's great yet.
06:41Slater's a good tackle.
06:43Certainly good and solid.
06:45I don't think he's exceptional or anything like that.
06:47Not yet.
06:48But you get a 40 to 7 result because you combine one team being better than the other.
06:55And then mostly one coaching staff being completely outcoached by the other one.
07:02And that's where I start.
07:04I don't put any of this on the players.
07:06In fact, I feel sorry for the players.
07:09They took the field against the Chargers wholly unprepared for this game.
07:16I'm sure they studied film.
07:18I'm sure they practice.
07:19I heard something about like they, you know, because of the short week and, you know, God forbid they don't come in on and work on Christmas, even though they have to play on Saturday.
07:32They were not prepared properly by these coaches for this game.
07:38This coaching staff is just completely overmatched.
07:41And it's not just the coordinator.
07:42It starts with the head coach.
07:44You know, the way your team plays is a reflection of you as a head coach.
07:49And what I saw in the field from the Patriots was an outfit that basically half-assed this game coming into it.
07:57They weren't prepared for anything that the Chargers were going to do.
08:00They didn't anticipate what the Chargers might do.
08:03The Chargers did whatever they wanted to.
08:05It was the difference between one coaching staff that doesn't know what the hell they're doing and is completely overmatched and overwhelmed against a professional, experienced coaching staff that gets their team ready to play.
08:21They knew what kind of pressure looks would give the Patriots issues, and it did all day.
08:30They understood how to manipulate the Patriots in the secondary and in the scheming people open.
08:35And there were people open all day long, not only on the touchdowns to McConkie and others, but, you know, Justin Herbert missed some open guys.
08:45There were guys open all day long.
08:47The Patriots didn't do anything.
08:50It didn't even come close to doing anything that gave the Chargers any sort of problems.
08:56And conversely, the Chargers presented problems all the time for the Patriots, and they had no clue.
09:05There were still communication problems all over the place.
09:08It looked like a JV football team against a great varsity football team.
09:15It was completely pathetic.
09:16Everyone associated with the Patriots and with that game should be embarrassed by what they put out there.
09:23And quite frankly, I don't want to see anything like this.
09:28And I do think it's that I do.
09:30You know, there have been reports about Mayo and.
09:36You know that he was safe.
09:38I think it was from Ian Rapoport saying unless there's something calamitous.
09:44What happened on Sunday?
09:45And, you know, before the game, the Antonio Antonio Gibson thing.
09:49Romandre Stevenson thing postgame guys.
09:53You got guys like Keon White and Demario Douglas talking about the things need to change.
09:59This is off of one year with this coaching staff.
10:02And you combine that with the on field product.
10:05And to me, this was calamitous.
10:08I wasn't really sure until I dove in the film.
10:10But that was a as bad a football product as I have ever seen.
10:16It looked like something out of the Dolphins with Cam Cameron when he went one in 15 and got fired.
10:21It was it was completely pathetic.
10:24It was embarrassing.
10:26And to me, it should put Gerard Mayo squarely.
10:32On the possible cutting block.
10:36But we will discuss that in a second.
10:38As soon as I tell you about Price Picks.

11:59Price Picks, run your game.
12:01Let's talk about Mayo at this point.
12:04I still think as of today, as of New Year's Eve, I do think he's more probable than not to be back as coach next year.
12:16I would put the percentages now at about 60-65%.
12:22I thought he had it locked up after the Buffalo game.
12:25But what they put out there, if the crafts know what they're looking at, if they're listening to the right people,
12:33if they're asking questions of the right people, that should cause you concern.
12:39To put up that type of performance at home near the end of the season, to me it shows that there has been no progress.
12:47They are regressing, actually. It's getting worse.
12:50I don't know. I don't see any path forward to making it better next year.
12:56I think they have to entertain the nuclear option, blowing it all up.
13:00Perhaps they retain Elliott Wolfe, who I do think is one of the few people in his spot who is actually prepared and ready for this.
13:08I know he did not have a good offseason. I think he would even tell you that.
13:12But does that mean he should be done? I mean, possibly.
13:20Look, I've said this from the beginning.
13:24I said this when Belichick was on the way out, before we knew about the ridiculous succession contract language that Mayo had.
13:33I would interview all the best head coaching and GM candidates.
13:40Whoever is the best person, whoever impresses you the most, whoever has the best credentials, whoever has the best plan,
13:47whether it's a head coach or GM, you go with them, you back them.
13:51And then that person hires the other one to make sure that you have alignment.
13:59Look, let's just say they fire Mayo, say they end up on Mike Vrabel.
14:04If Vrabel wants to keep Elliott Wolfe, he can keep Elliott Wolfe.
14:09I do think that the trio of Elliott Wolfe, Alonzo Highsmith and Pat Stewart, they are experienced.
14:16They're good at what they do. They've been around.
14:20They had a bad offseason. There's no doubt about that.
14:23I still think the draft will look better down the line.
14:26I don't think that Polk is as bad as he's shown.
14:29I think a lot of it is the coaching at the wide receiver position.
14:35But I think that the Crafts have to really entertain ending this after one year.
14:43And here's the thing about that.
14:49I think, and maybe I'm wrong. I'm curious what you guys think.
14:53But I think that if Craft prolongs this, if he's just said, oh, it was too early.
15:01We put him in a bad position. We're going to go another year.
15:04I think he's going to do the risk of doing much more damage to this franchise.
15:10And his legacy are much greater than if he fires Mayo after one season.
15:17I made this point before.
15:21The San Francisco 49ers are the San Francisco 49ers.
15:24Nobody really cares that they had two one-and-dones in Tom Sula and Chip Kelly.
15:29Nobody cares.
15:31They had the legacy before. They got Kyle Shanahan.
15:34You can think whatever you want of him, but that's a pretty good program.
15:37And I think they've been to, what, two Super Bowls during his tenure.
15:45He was a guy who his first year closed strongly.
15:48I think they won five or six games to finish the year.
15:52But I just think if you're Craft and you're being pragmatic about this
15:58and you're being a businessman, you have to put the risk-reward.
16:06How much are you risking your legacy and the damage to this franchise, let alone Drake May,
16:12if on a hunch, your gut, you say, well, we're going to do it.
16:17We're going to bring everybody back. We're going to do it for a second season.
16:21If that doesn't work, you're screwed for a very long time.
16:27Unless you get the right guy.
16:29Who knows who's going to be the head coach?
16:30I mean, I'm glad they got Drake May this year.
16:32I'm glad they didn't trade down and say, oh, we'll figure out the quarterback position
16:35because there aren't really any quarterbacks in this draft.
16:38They got the guy.
16:40And as long as you get the guy, that's the most important thing.
16:45And head coaches is probably even more important.
16:51Craft has always talked about you need the coach and the quarterback.
16:55I think we all know they got the quarterback.
16:57How sure are you that May owes the coach?
17:00What are you basing that on?
17:01He certainly doesn't have the experience.
17:03And so I think that if he's being honest and he's not just being overly sentimental
17:12and his mind's not clouded by age or what have you, that if he looked at this,
17:19he has to come away and say, this is not the path forward.
17:24The chances of it getting better next year, appreciably better, are not very good.
17:28And so you're going to be looking for a head coach next year.
17:33Ben Johnson and Mike Vrabel are probably going to be gone this year.
17:36Who are the next guys up?
17:39Are you sure they're going to be better?
17:42Are you sure you have viable candidates?
17:44You have to look at it just like the Patriots did with picking the quarterback
17:50or not trading down.
17:51They looked at it and they say, May's the guy.
17:54We don't know.
17:55Say we do trade down, what's our path to a quarterback the next year?
17:58Very murky.
18:00I think the head coach is the same way.
18:02You have to look at it.
18:04If we make a move right now, and let's just say it's Mike Vrabel,
18:09who I think the world of, and I think he's going to be a great head coach,
18:12especially even better the second time around, and especially if he gets a quarterback.
18:16What are the chances for this franchise with Gerard Mayo or Mike Vrabel?
18:23Who gives you the best chance to be better next year?
18:26To be a viable NFL product?
18:29Again, not what we saw on the field on Saturday.
18:32That was freaking pathetic.
18:33It should be an embarrassment.
18:35It should put Mayo on the chopping block legitimately.
18:39That's how bad it was.
18:41He's responsible for that.
18:43That was a disgusting display of professional football
18:47and the kind that gets coaches fired.
18:50I don't even care what happens against the Bills.
18:53This is how they have to look at it.
18:56They're smart business people, I think.
19:00At least that's their reputation.
19:03I don't know how they could look at that on Saturday
19:08and say that this is going in the right direction,
19:11that Mayo has done anything good.
19:13I don't think that he has.
19:15I don't think there's an argument to be made.
19:17All I hear about is, you don't want to be one of these teams
19:20that fires everybody after one year.
19:22I mean, nobody really cares.
19:24Like I said, with the 49ers, nobody cares.
19:26Nobody brings it up.
19:28The 49ers are still a great franchise.
19:30They're a perennial contender almost every other year.
19:35The Eagles have fired people,
19:38fired Andy Reid, fired Doug Peterson.
19:42They're still a perennial contender.
19:45With Nick Sirianni and how they do things with Howie Roseman,
19:48that's what they need to get to.
19:49Does anybody really think that if they retain Gerard Mayo
19:54that these guys are going to be a lot better next year?
19:59I don't think so.
20:01But we'll have to see what happens.
20:05Speaking of the game on Sunday,
20:08if you want to be there to voice your opinion,

21:14What time is it? Game time.
21:17A couple things on the game.
21:19I really don't want to spend too much time on it.
21:22I hated watching that film.
21:24Like I said, it was embarrassing.
21:26It was not a professional football product.
21:29The defense was completely no contest.
21:35You compare the Patriots defense
21:37to the Chargers defense.
21:39The Chargers knew exactly how
21:41to attack the Patriots protections,
21:43what gave them problems.
21:44It looks to me like in this offense
21:46with Alex Van Pelt,
21:48and this would be an indictment on Alex Van Pelt.
21:50I don't know if it's a first year thing
21:52with Drake May or what,
21:54but teams now know that he doesn't have answers
21:56to certain looks and pressure.
21:58That gets them into trouble constantly.
22:00Every week now I have multiple pressures
22:03that are assigned to the team
22:05because the other team just beats your protection.
22:11That's a flaw.
22:13Most of the time in the West Coast offense,
22:16you just got to run the play.
22:18You have a check with me,
22:20you can kill it or whatever.
22:22It doesn't look like May has had that very much
22:24in recent weeks, especially on Saturday.
22:29The defense had no idea
22:31how to attack the Chargers protections,
22:34what gave them trouble.
22:36It was like a seven on seven game.
22:38Seven on seven from training camp.
22:40It was absolutely pathetic.
22:42It was wild.
22:44Justin Herbert could do whatever he wanted to.
22:46I thought he was wearing one of those red jerseys
22:48for crying out loud that they couldn't touch him
22:50for a lot of the game.
22:55I don't even know what to say about it.
22:57It's just flat out embarrassing.
23:00Like I said, offensively, they had no chance.
23:03The Chargers, unlike the Patriots,
23:05took things away that they wanted to do.
23:07Sometimes they doubled people.
23:09God forbid the Patriots double Ladd McConkie
23:10or even, I don't know,
23:12delay him off the line.
23:15The offensive line had their issues.
23:17Some of it was physical.
23:19Some of it, I think, was just the Chargers
23:22out scheming the Patriots,
23:25which now pretty much happens on the regular.
23:27One thing I did want to mention,
23:29Cole Strange debuted at center.
23:32I thought Cole was okay.
23:36I had him four in the game.
23:38I had him four.
23:40I did put that sack, the early snap sack,
23:45I put that on Cole Strange.
23:47Could put it on the team.
23:49That's where it was originally.
23:51I thought I watched it more.
23:53He obviously screwed up.
23:55He had a tough time in the run game.
23:57It was reminiscent of some of the stuff
23:59that we saw when he was at guard.
24:01He could not execute reach blocks,
24:05and that's an issue in this scheme.
24:08Look, it was his first time out.
24:10I'm not going to indict him.
24:12I would say there was more good.
24:14His pass blocking was pretty good.
24:16I will say that.
24:18I thought there was more good than bad
24:20for Cole Strange at center,
24:22but certainly I haven't seen anything
24:24that says, well, he's definitely a center
24:26going forward.
24:28I think it's good that he has that ability.
24:30I think that you play him at both spots
24:32come to training camp and see what happens
24:34and see what you have on the line.
24:38We will get into some more likes
24:41and dislikes as soon as I tell you
24:43about my guys and Niterno.

25:06They came into installation,
25:08didn't have heat upstairs.
25:10It was like 53 degrees one morning.
25:12They came for a site visit.
25:14I asked the guy, can you check this out?
25:16See what's going on with the heat.
25:18Kids are freezing upstairs.
25:20I said, absolutely.
25:22I recognized that I had a faulty valve.
25:24Guess what?
25:26These guys replaced it free of cost
25:28just to get me to installation day

26:36It'll help you out in a big way.
26:38Okay.
26:40What did I want to look at?
26:42I want to look at my game charts for the game.
26:45Defensively,
26:47Anthony Jennings.
26:49Big up.
26:51Big rebound for him.
26:53He was terrible the week before.
26:55Still like Jeremiah Farms.
26:57I think he's doing some good stuff.
26:59Anybody else?
27:01No.
27:03Offensively,
27:04Antonio Gibson.
27:06Mostly for his work late in the game.
27:08Demario Douglas.
27:10I thought Owenu
27:12and Vidarian Lowe
27:14were pretty good in this game.
27:16As far as negatives,
27:18boy.
27:20Ngakwe, who just got released
27:22for that personal foul penalty
27:24before halftime.
27:26That was beyond dumb.
27:28Christian Ellis, not good.
27:30Sion Takitaki, not good.
27:32Jonathan Jones,
27:34this was one of his poor showings.
27:36I don't know.
27:38He's a little bit on the older side.
27:40It's late in the season.
27:42I didn't think he'd have that much trouble
27:44with McConkie.
27:46I guess I was wrong.
27:48Marte Mapu,
27:50not great.
27:52Kyle Duggar,
27:54I had him involved with,
27:56I think,
27:58four touchdowns in this game.
28:00Just brutal.
28:02Offensively,
28:04for me,
28:06Jacoby Berset,
28:08that one pass was just
28:10not good.
28:11Jalen Polk had a drop.
28:13Not a great day for Hunter Henry.
28:15And
28:17Leighton Robinson and
28:19Demantre Jacobs were my two lowest rated
28:21offensive linemen.
28:23So,
28:25yeah.
28:26But as you can tell,
28:28I'm not enthused about what I saw.
28:30And
28:32I have lost faith
28:34in the administration
28:36of the New England Patriots.
28:38They have some serious questions
28:40to ask themselves.
28:42And they better be serious about it,
28:44because if they get this wrong,
28:46I think there's going to be hell to pay,
28:48not only for the franchise,
28:50but among the fan base,
28:51you guys.
28:54They need to get it right.
28:56And I think the answer is clear.
28:58I don't think they do.
29:01But they better be careful,
29:02because
29:04this could do irreversible damage
29:06to this franchise for
29:08years to come.
29:10So, sorry to end on a down note,
29:12but you guys know me.
29:13I give it to you straight.
29:15I don't sugarcoat it.
29:17But have a happy new year.
29:19See you on the flip side.
29:21And let's finish out this season.
29:23One more game to go,
29:25and then we can talk about
29:27what's going to happen next,
29:29how they're going to get this team back,
29:30whatever path they go forward with,
29:32and we'll go from there.
29:34All right. Thanks, everybody.
29:36Talk to you later.
