00:00Another historic first was recorded in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race this year as an all-Filipino crew participated in the iconic event that began on December 26.
00:11Paulo Salamatin has the details.
00:15Fifteen Philippine sailors comprised of members from the national team and Philippine Navy, led by veteran member Ernesto Echaus, the team sailed on Sentinel-7, a TP-52 yacht with a winning history.
00:27Echaus described the opportunity as a dream come true, saying they never expected to join the prestigious 628-nautical-mile race from Sydney to Hobart, Tasmania.
00:37The yacht, formerly known as Aleskio, won the 2022 Sydney to Hobart race and was acquired by Echaus in September.
00:45This year's competition tested the team against over a hundred other entries, including six international boats.
00:52Sentinel-7 placed 12th overall in the recent Cabbage Tree Island race, their first in Australian waters.
00:59Last year's Sydney to Hobart race ended in a thrilling finish, with Lock Connect defeating Andu Comanche by just 51 seconds.
01:07Comanche still holds the record for the fastest finish set in 2017.
01:12With decades of experience together, the all-Filipino crew faced a new challenge at a higher competitive level, proudly representing the Philippines on the global sailing stage.
01:23Paulo Salamatin from the National TV of the New and Better Philippines.
