00:00Jimmy Carter, the peanut farmer who sought to restore integrity to the White House after
00:06Watergate and the Vietnam War, and later became a global advocate for human rights and democracy,
00:13has died at the age of 100.
00:15The Carter Center announced that the 39th president passed away peacefully Sunday at
00:20his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family.
00:24His wife of over 70 years, Rosalyn Carter, died in November 2023.
00:30Tributes poured in from around the world, including from President Joe Biden.
00:34Today, America and the world, in my view, lost a remarkable leader.
00:41He was a statesman and a humanitarian, and Jill and I lost a dear friend.
00:48Biden cited Carter's compassion and moral clarity that serve as an enduring example
00:52for others.
00:53In today's world, some look at Jimmy Carter and see a man of a bygone era.
00:59With honesty and character, faith and humility, it mattered, but I don't believe it's a bygone
01:04era.
01:05I see a man not only in our times, but for all times, someone who embodied the most fundamental
01:10human values we can never let slip away, although sometimes it seems like it is, or we may never
01:18We'd all do well to try to be a little more like Jimmy Carter.
01:23Biden has ordered a state funeral in Washington to honor Carter, who lived longer after leaving
01:28the presidency than any other U.S. leader.
01:31Carter faced health challenges in recent years, including melanoma that spread to his liver
01:36and brain.
01:38In February 2023, he chose to enter hospice care, spending his final days at home with
01:43his family.
01:45Elected in 1976, Carter defeated Gerald Ford to become the 39th U.S. president, but his
01:51term was marred by economic woes and the Iran hostage crisis, leading to a 1980 loss to
01:57Ronald Reagan.
01:59After leaving office, Carter earned widespread respect for his humanitarian work.
02:04He won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for advancing democracy, human rights, and economic development.
02:11He continued teaching Sunday school well into his 90s at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains,
02:17often with Rosalyn by his side.
02:19I've had a wonderful life, Carter said in 2015.
02:23I've had thousands of friends and an exciting, adventurous, and gratifying existence.
02:29Carter is survived by four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
