00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're counting down our picks for the top 20 best PS4 games
00:15of all time.
00:28For this list, we're taking a look at the best titles we saw throughout the PlayStation
00:334's lifecycle.
00:34Do note that we are only including exclusives, and we're not counting cross-gen titles.
00:40Which of these games do you feel is a requirement for every PS4 owner to play?
00:45Let us discuss in a civil manner down in the comments.
01:10Just because we're putting Days Gone at the bottom does not make it the worst of the
01:15PS4 exclusives.
01:16Much like the rest of our list, Days Gone manages to tell a solid story, while immersing
01:22us in a captivating, albeit morbid zombie apocalypse.
01:26Ahem, I mean, FREAKER apocalypse.
01:32On top of that, the gunplay and swarms of zom- EXCUSE ME, FREAKERS makes every combat
01:39encounter tense and thrilling.
01:41So why so low?
01:43Well, it's a bit hard to recommend to anyone who is mildly annoyed by all the zombie movies
01:49and TV shows that crop up as frequently as they do.
01:53It comes off as unoriginal.
01:55But this is also why we have the phrase, don't judge a book by its cover.
02:09Detroit Become Human.
02:19Regardless of whether you like or loathe developer Quantic Dream for its emotional stories, Detroit
02:25Become Human is by far their best work.
02:29Set in a future where humanoid robots are mankind's servants, players follow Kara,
02:34an android on the run with her owner's daughter, Marcus, a caretaker android who soon discovers
02:39his free will, and Connor, an android of the police who assists a discriminating, alcoholic
02:46investigator.
02:47Every character is well-written, fully fleshed out in their personality and storyline, and
02:52with all of the different choices to choose from, you'll want to see every possible
02:57ending after your initial playthrough.
03:11Concrete Genie.
03:19Poor Concrete Genie got overshadowed by the PlayStation 5 as Sony talked about their new
03:24console on the game's launch day.
03:28But we see you, Concrete Genie.
03:29Developer Pixelopus brought us a beautiful tale about a lonesome boy who discovers a
03:34magical paintbrush, allowing him to create monsters and restore color back to his home.
03:40Whereas most art-themed games resort to giving you a sketchbook and saying, draw something,
03:45Concrete Genie gives you enough freedom to make its world your own, and its charming
03:51monsters, wondrous story, and chill atmosphere serve as an excellent game to play for an
03:56evening from start to finish.
04:15Medieval.
04:24Another title overshadowed by the news of the PS5, Medieval was a remake that stayed
04:28true to the original for better and worse, even though it retains the clunky controls
04:34and combat back in 1998.
04:37Venturing out as Sir Daniel Fortesque felt just as exciting as it did back in 1998.
04:43The world of Galamir has new life breathed into its dark and dismal landmarks thanks
04:48to the power of the PS4, and the character animation perfectly complements the top-notch
04:54sound design.
04:55Oh, and the fact that you can unlock the original game by achieving a 100% completion?
05:00Truly, this is one of the best remakes ever, even with its flaws.
05:09Everybody's Golf.
05:23It isn't often that we get a truly exceptional golf game, and rarely did the Everybody's
05:29Golf series, or Hot Shots as North Americans know it, under-deliver.
05:34Everybody's Golf was essentially the ultimate golfing experience.
05:37Along with a handful of cleverly designed courses, the game came with a vast assortment
05:42of cosmetics and character customization while celebrating the king's game.
05:48Not only did it test your skills on the course, it also tested your knowledge of the sport
05:52and terminology, and even allowed you to participate in some fun golf cart racing.
05:57Regardless, if you're a casual or hardcore golf fan, this was worth the price of admission.
06:14LittleBigPlanet 3 Admittedly, the LittleBigPlanet series was
06:26growing a bit tiresome at this point, but that doesn't make its third main entry any
06:31less spectacular.
06:33LBP3 came out with its own slew of creative ideas, its main focus being the different
06:38playable characters.
06:40Swoop, Toggle, and Oddsock each brought new mechanics and concepts to the franchise with
06:45their different abilities, paving the way for players to come up with fresh ideas for
06:49their own levels and games to upload.
06:52Basically, it was another charming adventure with Sackboy and friends, and another good
06:57excuse to exercise our imagination for an afternoon.
07:16Until Dawn Now, we can be honest and say that Until
07:30Dawn isn't exactly a perfect candidate compared to most other horror games, specifically when
07:37it comes to character animation.
07:39However, we would argue that its uncanny looks add to the discomfort it carries with its
07:44campy tone.
07:45Despite its occasional cheesiness, Until Dawn still managed to bring the scares, and
07:50they came hard.
07:52From quick-time events to collecting totems to telling your therapist what terrifies you
07:56the most, the game invites you to participate in its TV-like narrative while throwing a
08:01few curveballs.
08:03Even if you're only remotely into horror, this is well worth your time.
08:17Shadow of the Colossus There was much debate over whether or not
08:30we should include Shadow of the Colossus on this list.
08:34Honestly, how many times can you remake or remaster the same game?
08:39Even with that question, this is ultimately the definitive version of the PS2 classic.
08:45We could go on about the visual fidelity all day, with the improved draw distance, highly
08:51detailed textures and environments, and everything.
08:54The real improvements here are in the controls.
08:57Even movements and mechanics have been more streamlined, making them easier to understand
09:02for new players.
09:03In other words, it's a remake that far surpasses the original in more ways than just having
09:09a fresh coat of paint.
09:26Tearaway Unfolded First-party UK-based studio Media Molecule
09:39didn't have a strong presence during the PS4 era.
09:42LittleBigPlanet 3 was mostly developed by Tencent-owned studio Sumo Digital.
09:48This isn't to say they didn't put out a banger of their own with Tearaway Unfolded,
09:53An enhanced remake of their 2013 PlayStation Vita game, Tearaway Unfolded added a plethora
10:00of new levels and ideas that weren't possible on the Vita, and even went so far as to design
10:06concepts around the PS4's hardware and the DualShock controller.
10:10Brimming with cleverness and personality, this was a game that could turn any frown
10:17The Last of Us Part II
10:37We are very well aware of just how contentious The Last of Us has become within not just
10:42the PlayStation community, but gaming in general.
10:46We can understand how many would perceive the game as shocking for the sake of being
10:51shocking, and the dozen or so hours spent with Abby were not exactly what gamers were
10:56expecting.
10:57However, it would be an injustice to neglect the technical achievements in The Last of
11:01Us Part II.
11:03Specifically in its complex AI and massive wealth of accessibility features, companies
11:08looking to reach more people with their games should take note of the latter.
11:24Infamous Second Son
11:36When the PlayStation 4 was just barely a year old, Second Son was a promising start
11:41to a new era of the platform.
11:44Yes, some of us were disappointed about Delsin Rowe replacing Cole McGrath, to each their
11:49own, but you cannot ignore the creativity and marvel behind this game.
11:55Developer Sucker Punch Productions got crazy with the smoke, neon, concrete, and video
12:00powers.
12:01Neat and unconventional ideas.
12:04And it may not be the best game in the franchise, but it's still worthy of being called one
12:08of the PS4's greatest titles.
12:20Astro Bot Rescue Mission
12:29We were debating whether to leave off PSVR games, but since they require a PS4 in order
12:35to run, we couldn't leave off our adorable Astro.
12:39Astro Bot Rescue Mission was exactly what the PSVR needed to get PS4 owners to jump
12:45into the world of VR.
12:47Not mentioning the fact we already had PS4s, you know?
12:50It isn't enough to just move Astro around.
12:53Every level requires some degree of interaction in order to progress, and you'll find so
12:58many cleverly hidden secrets as you venture forth.
13:01Astro Bot Rescue Mission is a miraculous joyride, and it's some of the most fun three hours
13:08you'll ever have.
13:20Final Fantasy VII Remake How do you remake a game as magnificent and
13:37expansive as Final Fantasy VII?
13:40A tall order for most studios.
13:43For Square Enix, though, it was worth every nickel and dime.
13:47Final Fantasy VII Remake was a pure passion project, as it expanded upon every character's
13:53backstory, including ones who were only supporting cast members, and the reworked combat system
13:58managed to incorporate new and modern ideas without sacrificing those featured in the
14:04original.
14:05But if you haven't played the original, we highly recommend you go play the first
14:09before jumping into this one.
14:10You'll realize why this was such a big deal to so many players.
14:25Uncharted 4 A Thief's End We all know that Uncharted 2 will probably
14:39be the best game in the franchise until the day it dies.
14:43However, Uncharted 4 came super close to overthrowing it, its only stumble being just a little bit
14:50slower in its pacing.
14:51Even so, this was the perfect send-off for Nathan Drake.
14:55The semi-open-world approach was pulled off surprisingly well, the story was cleverly
15:00written and compelling from start to finish, and it perfectly closes Nathan Drake's story.
15:06It's easily one of the best games to come from Naughty Dog in recent years, and it's
15:10a must-play, assuming you've already played the first three games.
15:26Ratchet & Clank Don't worry, this is the last time we'll
15:39be talking about remakes on this list.
15:42And of them all, Ratchet & Clank was the best of the batch.
15:46Though it has some problems with how it severs aspects of what made the original game so
15:51great, like the scrappy attitude, it still manages to bring some major improvements.
15:55For example, the weapon reel functions more closely with the later games, giving players
16:00pause to assess their situation and carefully select from their arsenal.
16:04Hardcore fans might not appreciate the ultra-G-rated tone, but this was a great way to keep fans
16:10satisfied until Rift Apart launched on PS5.
16:22Horizon Zero Dawn New IPs come and go.
16:34Sony struck gold here, though.
16:36Horizon Zero Dawn managed to surpass its ultra-generic name and bring us an experience unlike any
16:43other.
16:44We could spend hours dissecting the puzzles, lore, and characters, but the stars of the
16:49show here are the combat and enemy design.
16:52The way the dinosaur-like machines are constructed helps you recognize where potential weak points
16:57are, and gives you an idea which tools are right for the job.
17:00Sure, the animation can seem uncanny at times, but it's easy to look past when the game
17:05plays this well.
17:21Marvel's Spider-Man With the Batman Arkham games having ended,
17:29it was only a matter of time before Marvel got a Batman Arkham of their own.
17:35In comes Insomniac Games with Marvel's Spider-Man, promising a new age of not just
17:40superhero games, but licensed games as a whole.
17:44Breathtaking visuals, thrilling combat, satisfying web-slinging, and a compelling story are wrapped
17:50up in one webby package here, and none of it is marred in exaggerated swagger.
17:56We would happily put it up higher if only it didn't have those dull stealth missions
18:01with MJ and Miles.
18:03Sorry, Spidey!
18:16God of War Despite what other outlets might try to say,
18:32the older God of War games are still fantastic games today, bloodthirsty, rage and all.
18:38As for God of War 2018, it manages to fit that same combo-fueled action while also hitting
18:45differently in several ways.
18:47The epic and booming soundtrack, the unique environments, the way you can mix your axe
18:51and blades with Atreus' archery, the impacts you feel visually and audibly when you recall
18:57the Leviathan Axe, it all makes you feel like a powerhouse.
19:01And even on the easiest difficulty, God of War does its damn hardest to kick you down
19:06and help you hone your skills.
19:09Our only complaint?
19:10Man, Midgard houses a lot of trolls!
19:25Bloodborne Oh, Bloodborne.
19:35You have been done a tremendous disservice.
19:38With your splendidly morbid atmosphere, your depressing and dark characters, your relentless
19:44boss fights, and harsh, embracive death, you deserve so much more.
19:50As fans of PlayStation and FromSoftware games, it's incredibly hard to say a game is better,
19:57nay superior, than you.
19:59So why must we do this?
20:01Why must we betray our good graces towards you, and put you at number two?
20:07Four words.
20:08Thirty.
20:09Frames.
20:10Per.
20:11Second.
20:12An unfair judgment upon you, considering modern times, yes.
20:16But a judgment, nonetheless.
20:18So, Sony, put this game on PS5 already, and make it 60, damn it!
20:38Ghost of Tsushima We'd like to take a moment to say that every
20:51game featured on this list is fantastic in its own ways.
20:55Every game on this list is 100% a must-own for anyone who has a PS4.
21:00But when discussing games that are on the cusp of perfection, Ghost of Tsushima was
21:06the closest to achieving that.
21:08A well-written story, exceptional combat that enforces patience and skill, a wealth of exciting
21:14adventures to live out your samurai and or ninja fantasy, a free expansion that allowed
21:19us to play with friends, it ticked every box.
21:23The only complaint we had was the sheer number of Inari shrines, and even that is a trivial
21:29criticism.
21:30Every PS4 owner needs to play the games we mentioned here, but if there is one that defines
21:35the generation, it was Ghost of Tsushima.
