One of Victoria's biggest zoos has spent the past few days evacuating its animals from the nearby Grampians bushfire. Staff at the Halls Gap Zoo have relocated birds, monkeys, and reptiles, but larger animals like rhinos and giraffes have had to stay behind. The zoo's owner, Mark Trewweek, says keepers are on standby today for an expected wind change.

00:00We've got over 500 animals here, we've sent off two loads yesterday, we've taken some
00:07to home and we've sent some down to Werribee Zoo as well and we've got sprinklers throughout
00:12the facility, depending on where they're from, obviously where they're from, so we've got
00:15sprinklers in that we use on hot days anyway, so that cools them down, so it also protects
00:20from that heat from days like today where you never know what's going to happen, so
00:25we'll have all the sprinklers on very shortly and then they'll be on all day and we've also
00:30got the CFA actually use our main water supply as one of their supplies, so we've actually,
00:37they do a circuit of the zoo as they're filling up with water and things like that as well,
00:41so that's our own fire gear.
