00:00Luigi Mangione has formally spoken on the accusations against him in the fatal shooting
00:13of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The 26-year-old suspect arrived at his arraignment
00:19in New York state court on December 23rd and pleaded not guilty to murder and related
00:24terrorism charges stemming from Thompson's death. Mangione was escorted into the courtroom
00:30in shackles and wore a maroon sweater over a white collared shirt, a similar look to
00:35his defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo, who NBC News reports told the court that she
00:40believes Mangione may not get a fair trial in light of his highly publicized legal appearances.
00:47Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania on December 9th after a five-day manhunt following
00:52Thompson's high-profile killing, which authorities have called a, quote, premeditated, brazen,
00:58and targeted attack. In addition to Mangione's state indictment, he is also facing federal
01:03charges of murder and stalking along with a firearm offense that could bring the death
01:08penalty. He is expected to enter a plea on those charges at a later date. If convicted in his
01:13state case, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole. Mangione's state
01:19arraignment comes days after he landed in Manhattan by helicopter after waiving his
01:23extradition from Pennsylvania. His arrival made headlines for the massive police escorts
01:28surrounding him that included New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
01:39He is being held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn,
01:43the same facility where Sean Diddy Combs is incarcerated.
01:47Of reported two dozen members of the public, mostly young women
01:51are said to have appeared in the courtroom to support Mangione at his state arraignment,
01:55in addition to a small group of protesters outside in freezing temperatures.
