During Shyam Benegal's funeral, Bollywood star Boman Irani said, "I became an actor, I just wish I had an opportunity to work with him, then one fine day he phoned me many many 35 years later and told me to do ‘Well Done Abba’. I don't know how I'm holding myself up now, but I cried that day because I knew the experience would never recur in my life. I've never cried when I left a movie set.”

00:06many many maybe 30-35 years after that later and asked me to do Well Done Abba. I have never cried
00:13leaving a film set but on that day I cried I don't know how I'm holding myself up today
00:17I cried because I knew that that experience will never come back in my life never again. I learned
00:22so much I learned about cinema life general knowledge literature art humanity and most of
00:30all humor and he treated everybody equally he was there was equality mostly spending time with him
00:38was like enriching yourself so we will miss him it is an end of an era there is no doubt about it
00:43it is an end of an era of a kind of cinema that every month somewhere there would be a retrospective
00:48of his films in some corner of the planet and he would go he would travel a lot in the last few
00:53years though he could not but I remember where are you going I'm going to Chile where are you
00:56going I'm going to Venezuela where are you going I'm going to Japan and everywhere they would play
00:59a retrospective of his films such was his legacy I think everybody over here and the rest of the
01:04country have lost somebody very very truly great to see there can only be one Sham Benegal right
01:11um I think youngsters should go into his archives watch his films find that inspiration
01:22and maybe in his passing he will leave us a gift for us to remind us have a look at my films they
01:29will learn something from that I think Ankur was for me most most heartbreaking it was something
01:36like Rishida asked him why is the sound in your film so different he's saying because I'm shooting
01:41on location he never did the dubbing so he brought he brought back you know even technique and and
01:47aesthetics and storytelling and he told me one thing I'll never forget as a as a as a cinema
01:53person even if you watch a film in any language the film is good if you don't need subtitles
01:59that's the power of storytelling
