00:00How deadly was 2024 for journalists?
00:09104 journalists were killed across the world in 2024 according to the International Federation of Journalists.
00:17Despite the staggering number, there were slightly fewer deaths compared to 2023 when 129 media professionals were killed, making it the deadliest year since 1990.
00:30Let's take a closer look at the figures for 2024.
00:3455 of the 104 killings were Palestinian journalists in Gaza. A further 6 were killed in Lebanon.
00:41The IFJ says that since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023, the number of Palestinian journalists killed has risen to at least 138, making this conflict one of the most dangerous in the history of modern journalism.
00:55After the Middle East, the most deadly region of the world for journalists in 2024 was Asia-Pacific.
01:0220 journalists lost their lives, considerably more than the 12 who were killed in 2023.
01:09This coincides with an upsurge in violence against journalists in South Asia, with Pakistan, Bangladesh and India accounting for 70% of all deaths in the region.
01:208 journalists were murdered in Africa, 5 of them in Sudan.
01:24In South, Central and North America, the number of deaths has declined considerably in recent years, from 30 in 2022 to just 6 in 2024.
01:35The IFJ estimated earlier this month that there are currently 520 journalists imprisoned around the world simply for doing their work.
01:44China, including Hong Kong, is the world's biggest prison for journalists, according to the IFJ, followed by Israel, where 59 Palestinian journalists are behind bars, and then in Myanmar.
