00:00For many, Christmas Eve means cozying up at home with loved ones, indulging in festive
00:11treats and tackling last-minute holiday preparations.
00:15Not so for the Kuala Lumpur madrigal singers and players, whose love for choral and classical
00:19music has them trading yuletide lounging for the main stage.
00:23This Christmas Eve, the ensemble will take the stage at Bobo KL, performing a sold-out
00:28programme that promises to spread holiday cheer.
00:33The music that we present, especially the Bach, are very difficult and intricate music
00:42that often you only get a chance to hear in concert halls, but we were very delightful
00:47that we can bring this music and try to bring it into a very famous jazz joint in KL.
00:53And we hope that with this, we get a chance to reach out to more audience.
00:57Boo shared that the Candlelight Christmas Eve performance was born from a collaboration
01:02with the renowned Jazz Club in Bangsar.
01:05The idea?
01:06To bring a classical Christmas showcase into an unexpected setting, a jazz venue.
01:11The group saw this as the perfect opportunity to spotlight rarely-performed musical gems
01:17alongside traditional holiday pieces.
01:21The evening's repertoire transcends classic carols, offering a rich blend of classical
01:26masterworks, enchanting four-hands piano duets and the intricate beauty of motets.
01:38Woo described Candlelight Christmas Eve as a distinctive addition to the holiday season,
01:43transcending the usual seasonal fare.
01:45Motets, celebrated for their complex structure and emotional depth, are a highlight of the
01:50programme.
01:51While challenging for less-seasoned musicians, the KL Madrigal singers and players have embraced
01:57the task, fine-tuning their performance in a dedicated rehearsal last Sunday evening.
02:07The preparation for this project is quite tight because we've only decided it quite
02:12late in the game as well, but we believe that we are going to deliver a good one for this
02:17show.
02:18Specifically, the motets are really difficult and it really takes the most focus from each
02:24of us, so we are trying our best to do that.
02:29And on the lighter repertoire, we believe that the Christmas spirit itself will enhance
02:34the whole entire experience, so we believe it will be a good one.
02:37Their commitment runs deep, with the ensemble meeting weekly and completing around five
02:42rehearsals for each performance.
02:46Adding a unique touch to the evening, pianists Daryl Chan and Yao Zhouyi will deliver four-hands
02:52piano renditions of Bach.
02:54This captivating duet style, where two pianists share the same keyboard, is a rare and mesmerising
02:59experience for live audiences.
03:02More than just a concert, Candlelight Christmas Eve represents a deeply meaningful gathering
03:07for the group, allowing them to display their diverse talents in a collective celebration
03:12of artistry and passion.
