Shams Charania went on Pat McAfee and said the Jimmy Butler story he reported was the most vetted story he's ever put out. Is Shams in too deep?
Transcript
00:00Uh, yesterday on the NBA cup coverage, Sean Sharania is, uh, continued to
00:07stick his beak in the Jimmy Butler business as NBA's lead insider.
00:12But the funny thing was, yes.
00:14The funny thing was yesterday when he was like, he tweets out the latest
00:19with the Jimmy Butler situation.
00:21I was like, all right, I'll bite.
00:22What do you got for me?
00:23Shams.
00:24And this is what he said on the NBA cup preview show yesterday
00:29on the Jimmy situation.
00:31So the talks are, I'm told the heat remain open to hearing
00:35interested suitors in Jimmy Butler.
00:36There's not an urgency that they're operating under.
00:39When you look at his salary, $49 million this year, he's got a $52
00:43million player option for next year.
00:45The market that we're going to see come this off season, there's one
00:48team with significant cap space, and that's going to be the Brooklyn
00:51nets $60 million plus, and as of right now in the trade market, the
00:55nets are not believed to be a suitor and they might not make sense for him
00:59come off season either, because clearly they're more of a rebuilding
01:01retooling situation, and he's going to be a 36 year old wind now star.
01:06And that's why I'm told the sons and the warriors are believed to be a top.
01:10His list of preferred wind now destinations.
01:12If the Miami heat were to trade him the rockets and Mavericks being the others,
01:16but this is a fluid situation.
01:18We are going to see this play out over the coming week.
01:21All right.
01:21So there you go.
01:22I don't really understand how that is the latest other than, I guess he is
01:25now ranked Jimmy's favorites teams, which are the sons of the warriors,
01:30which I gotta be honest with you guys.
01:32I don't know if Jimmy Butler is getting traded or not.
01:34Maybe he does, but I don't understand what really here is new because the
01:39heat don't have to trade Jimmy Butler to the sons cause they, unless
01:43they're giving KD back, I don't really, uh, I don't think they're interested
01:47in Bradley Beal because well, they weren't interested in Bradley Beal last year.
01:51So why would they be interested in paying, paying
01:54anybody?
01:55I don't know.
01:57He's always hurt.
01:58He's always hurt.
01:59He's hurt.
02:00And he makes Jimmy Butler money more years after the, the, where the
02:04heat don't want to pay Jimmy Butler.
02:06It is one of those things that like everybody is just like saying a thing.
02:11Cause I think that, cause I think they like to make graphics for Instagram and
02:15you have, I understand why the sons are interested in it.
02:17If I had Bradley Beal and I could get Jimmy Butler, of course, I'd
02:19rather have Jimmy Butler.
02:20He's a better player.
02:21He's a more impactful player.
02:23He fits better with your team.
02:25I get why the sons would love Jimmy Butler.
02:27And I would imagine that's probably where a lot of the smoke is coming from.
02:30And then I'm sure that the sons, I'm sure James Jones has probably told or
02:34heard from Jimmy Butler's agent, even if he denies Sean saying, all right, but
02:38if we trade for him, he's like, would you, would you pay him the extension?
02:41And they'd be like, hell yeah.
02:42We'd pray in that Bradley Beal money.
02:44Why wouldn't they?
02:46So that's where that whole, Oh, who's the top of the list?
02:49Who's the top of the list is who's going to give Jimmy Butler his money on.
02:52That's who's the top of the list.
02:54But then RJ, uh, Richard Jefferson, finally, somebody with some sanity
03:01tried to ask the most obvious question in the world yesterday on the pregame show.
03:06And then you have Kendrick Perkins stepping in.
03:08Like he's like, he's all I got this.
03:12How do the Phoenix sons get Jimmy?
03:13But let me, let me, let me get this.
03:15Okay.
03:15You're okay.
03:16Let's I'm asking.
03:17I think Bradley Beal would have to be involved with this.
03:19But he'd have to wave his new trade.
03:21Oh, okay.
03:22So this ain't just about what Jimmy Butler wants.
03:25It's also about, Hey, Bradley, we're sending you someplace else because I
03:28don't see one draft assets.
03:30I don't see other young assets.
03:31And I know Devin Booker and Kevin Durant.
03:33Ain't the people that they're talking about.
03:34They do have one first round pick and three second round picks.
03:37They could trade if they wanted to.
03:39Oh, do you think that that would be enough to get the ticket?
03:42The $49 million, all of those picks Bradley Beal salary matches.
03:47And then from that point, it's about is the first, what would the picks be enough?
03:51That's not for me to debate.
03:52Yeah.
03:52Okay.
03:53Well, it's not for you to debate because it's the stupidest
03:56thing I've ever heard in my life.
03:57Like, Oh, would that be enough to get Jimmy Butler?
04:00Oh, he is sitting there.
04:03You're playing with your belly button.
04:04Cause you, you, you fired up the trade machine shams and Richard Jefferson
04:08sitting here asking like, wait, would the heat actually want Bradley Beal?
04:11Does anybody want like, it would have to involve Bradley Beal.
04:15I'm like, yeah, that's kind of the point.
04:18If like, if Bradley Beal is an expiring deal, even then I would be like, okay,
04:22the heat are going to get some salary cleared.
04:24That kind of makes sense.
04:26And then they can go have their reset.
04:28The heat are going to go into more financial debt for Jimmy Butler.
04:31I think everybody needs to be smart and, and understand who, who are the people
04:36that are involved in these negotiations and trades and all these deals are.
04:41The heat are not, we know that he don't not stupid.
04:44Okay.
04:45They're not going to be taking no Bradley Beal.
04:48You didn't want to sign with us or trade, you know, you didn't want to
04:51waive your no trade clause when you were in Washington, why I want
04:53you now when you're done.
04:55Yeah.
04:56It's it's when you're broken down, but I'm getting sick and tired of some
05:01of these trade allegations because it's like, be smart and be real about it.
05:06Like really think, take the time out and think about it.
05:09Golden state.
05:10Golden state is, it may look good, but are you willing to offer all of that for
05:15something that's not a given if you're golden state, but you're going to
05:18have to give up what cominga you're going to have to give up a Wiggins
05:22Wiggins and other drafts.
05:25Come on, but at least that makes more sense, you know, cause like, at least
05:30the, he could say, Hey, if, even if they're not into cominga, at least
05:33the, he'd be like, someone's going to want cominga, right?
05:36Because right.
05:39Right.
05:39That's the, at least it makes some sense.
05:41I'm not going to deny the warriors, the son's thing.
05:44Like it's almost like Shams has, has it out for this because Jimmy's
05:48agent called him out on it.
05:50And, and most people have said, Oh, Jimmy would be.
05:53Yeah.
05:54Because the son's owner has a ton of money.
05:56Of course he would be into it, but guess what, dude, that's what happens
05:59when you shoot your wad on the big three that you picked, you know,
06:05we get Jimmy welder, you traded Kevin Durant to the Miami heat.
06:07That's how he gets them.
06:09But if that's not, if that's not on the other end of the call, what's the call?
06:12Like, Oh, do you think James Jones even has the, the, the cajones
06:15to make that call to Pat Riley?
06:17You're like, I like that.
06:19I like that.
06:20Would you, uh, would you call it?
06:22Would you, he's like, Pat James, why are you even calling me?
06:24Dude?
06:24Click.
06:26Champ.
06:27Come on, champ.
06:29Click.
06:30Now you're not going to disrespect champ like that.
06:32He has respect champ.
06:34Come on.
06:35I'm just like, I'm trying to figure it out.
06:36I don't want to be the guy who's like, Hey, the Jimmy boat, there's
06:39nothing to the Jimmy Butler rumors.
06:40I think there's a lot to the rumors.
06:42There's a lot to the rumors.
06:43There's if there's smoke, there's some sort of fire in the foreground
06:47and the heat did this to themselves.
06:49You guys know, I've been an advocate for paying Jimmy.
06:51I think that they should have done.
06:52Right.
06:52And that's fine.
06:53They're not okay.
06:54Whatever.
06:55They've made the direction, but like, wait, let's just, let's just
06:59take a step back here, guys.
07:00Okay.
07:02The Miami heater in this situation.
07:04Because they didn't want to pay a player, uh, a heap of money because
07:11they didn't think that he was going to live up to that contract.
07:14So what you're telling me, everybody who wants the sons thing to happen.
07:18I don't care if you could have wind horsed, whoa, shams, you could have
07:23them come together, like Voltron have shifter on the ash cheek.
07:26You could have every insider in the world.
07:29Tell me that the sons are going to are very interested in Jimmy Butler and Jimmy
07:32Butler's interesting going to the sons.
07:34But please somebody explained to me why the Miami heat in a situation started
07:41because they don't want to spend money would trade Jimmy Butler to a team and
07:47take back a player, not as good for more money, just say that to yourself.
07:56Why would they do that?
07:59And they get one draft pick seven years from now, but he's the other thing.
08:04Right.
08:05What position?
08:06All right.
08:06So if you're saying Bradley bill, right, that's the guy that they would be
08:09trading.
08:10Why?
08:11When you have Tyler hero, that's, they say the same position, pretty much
08:16stop.
08:16It makes no sense.
08:18Enough with Phoenix.
08:19Now, Houston didn't go this day.
08:22For sure.
08:22We don't have a job, even though, you know, even if Houston's
08:25thrown cold water on it, we get fine.
08:27But the, the, but the sons thing, like he's so knee deep in the sons thing
08:31happening.
08:32And I'm like, Oh, and this is the thing.
08:34Everybody's like, you like, you know what, this is why ESPN, this is why
08:38people think you're, you're, you're a clown show ESPN because you have the
08:41hard dassy to sit up there and be like, Bradley bill for Jimmy Butler.
08:45I mean, come on.
08:46Like that's a trade.
08:47I'm like, it is.
08:49Yeah.
08:49Back in 90, like back in like 2015, maybe 16.
08:54I'm just flummoxed by it.
08:56It's not even that Tobin.
08:58I think after getting big boy by shams, I mean, by, uh, woes last year in the
09:04whole Dame Lillard, um, to the Miami heat situation, I think he's like, he's got
09:11to, he's got to be 10 towed down on his, on this.
09:13He's, he's going to die on this hill because sign a new big deal with ESPN.
09:18The whole, you know, the whole thing, this, he's got to give them something.
09:22He's got to give them a, something that's breaking or something that's newsworthy
09:27so that they don't at that signing of a shams doesn't look like a waste.
09:31So I think that's why he's really, he's knee deep in this and
09:34like, he's not giving up on this.
09:37It's weird because it's like, yeah, but what is he not giving up on blood?
09:40Like, cause no one's saying, all right, clearly there's interest.
09:43There's maybe mutual, but here's the mutual.
09:47He's like, um, from what I've been told, like, like, this is like, he's
09:51getting all this information, but here's the mutual interest.
09:54Here's the interest.
09:56The sons, would you rather have Jimmy Butler or Bradley Beal?
09:59I'd be like Jimmy Butler.
10:00Okay.
10:01Jimmy Butler.
10:02Would you like all the money from a rich owner or would you not like all the money
10:06from the rich owner in a pretty good team?
10:07Like, I would like all my money on a pretty good team.
10:09Okay.
10:10That's mutual interest.
10:11But then it's like, but does anybody go to the third party?
10:14And it's like, Hey, Miami heat.
10:15Do you want Bradley Beal?
10:17We already told you last year we did, but we're still going
10:21to talk about it for days.
10:22Okay.
10:23They're a top of the list.
