The government is introducing a landmark bill no longer allowing England's most vulnerable children to be eligible for homeschooling. The Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill, to be introduced to Parliament on Tuesday, comes on the same day Sara Sharif's killers will be sentenced. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said the legislation "will make sure we do a lot more to protect children and keep them safe". Report by Kennedyl. 00:00Today we're setting out landmark legislation in a new children's bill to
00:03make sure that we do a lot more as a country to keep children safe. The state
00:07has failed far too many children for far too long and the measures we're setting
00:11out today in the bill, for example around home education and safeguarding, will
00:15make sure that we do a lot more to work together to protect children and to keep
00:19them safe. And what difference will this make in cases like Sara Sharif? The case
00:23that we saw of Sara Sharif is utterly unspeakable. The level of brutality and
00:28violence that she experienced in her short life is incredibly distressing and
00:33horrifying. There will always be limits to what any government can do because
00:38sadly there will always be violent manipulative individuals that will do
00:41harm to those they're meant to love and protect. But we can do much more as a
00:45country to keep children safe and the measures today will involve the police,
00:49children's social care and education working much more closely, sharing
00:54information more effectively and taking on responsibilities to protect children.
