In our final battle of the festive meal deals, we pitted the bargain basement option from Aldi - everyone's favourite cheap supermarket - against Booths, Lancashire's very own supermarket chain with a slightly more high-brow approach. Here's what we thought...

00:00Hello, my name is Megan Bainbridge and I'm a reporter from the Lancashire Post and the
00:04Blackpool Gazette. So today I'm trying out two of the UK supermarket festive meal
00:09deals to see which one is the best one and I'll be comparing booze with Aldi to
00:14see which one comes out best. So starting off with booze, in the booze meal deal
00:19you can get four items for four pound which I think is a really good value as
00:23without the meal deal discount my meal deal would have come to around seven
00:27pounds so I think that's a really good value for money. In terms of what they
00:30had on offer, they had a range of festive options with the meal deals which was
00:34nice to see. Starting off with the sandwiches, they had prawn cocktail
00:37sandwich and a festive feast. I opted for the festive feast as I thought it was a
00:42classic festive sandwich which had turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing mayo, I
00:46thought you can't go wrong. I'd say this sandwich was really good, it had a nice
00:50balance of flavours, it wasn't too dry, it was a good balance of filling and
00:55bread and because some meal deals you get they're quite dry but this was a
01:00good balance, they've done this one really well. For the snack options, the
01:03only festive snack option on offer was a mince pie but I thought you can't go
01:07wrong with that, it was a classic option and I thought it was delicious, it was
01:11really good. The only thing I would say is it could have had a bit more filling
01:15inside, that's the only thing though really, other than that it was really
01:17good and the other snack option that I opted for was a Lindt chocolate bar as I
01:23thought that was the next best thing for a festive Christmassy snack. That was
01:27also pretty good, again you can't go wrong with a Lindt chocolate bar at
01:30Christmas. For the drink options, they had no particularly festive ones so I just
01:36opted for a coca-cola which was fine. Overall this meal deal came to £5
01:41which I think with the four items is quite reasonable. In terms of taste I
01:45thought it was really good overall, each of the options that were on offer
01:49were really good I think for a festive meal deal. Overall I would rate this meal
01:54deal a four out of five, it was an excellent value for money and there was
01:58a variety of festive options on offer which was good and maybe a festive drink
02:03would have made it a five but I think as a whole it was a good option for a
02:06festive meal deal. Moving on to the Aldi festive meal deal, with this one
02:11there was no real meal deal with discount as there was with booze, it was
02:15just you pick up what you want and that was the total. So for three items, a
02:19sandwich, a snack and a drink it came to £4.37 which I think was okay for what you've
02:25got. In terms of the options that they had for the Aldi festive meal deals they
02:27had a salmon and cream cheese, a vegan festive sandwich and a Christmas club
02:31sandwich. I think this was a good variety, it covered all grounds and I think it was just a good
02:36option to have. Again I chose the festive club as it was very similar to the one I
02:40chose at booze and I wanted to compare that. In terms of the flavour of the sandwich it was
02:44okay, for a meal deal it was okay but I was expecting a bit more festive
02:49flavouring as it had cranberry sauce and the turkey and the stuffing mayo, similar to the
02:56booze one but it just didn't come out as much so those flavours weren't as strong. If you hadn't told me that was a
03:01festive sandwich and I just tried it out and thought it was a regular meal deal sandwich so that was a bit
03:07disappointing but it was fine as a sandwich in itself. There was a variety of
03:12options for a snack and a drink however there were no festive options in this area and so I just opted for a
03:17barbecue, chicken skewers and apple juice which were fine as they were. It would have been nice to see a
03:23few more festive options in the snack area, maybe not in the drinks as that's not that common I don't think but maybe a few more
03:30festive options in the snack would have made it a bit better. Overall I'd say it was an okay meal deal, very filling and good for convenience but not as festive as I'd hoped for in terms of flavour
03:41and how many options they had so I'd give it a 2 out of 5. In terms of price the sandwich was £2.39, both snack and drink were £9.99 which totaled to £4.37 which I think is okay for what you get so I'd say value for money a 3 out of 5. As a whole I rate this meal deal a 2.5 out of 5, it was good but I expected it to be more festive tasting as well as there to be maybe a few more options in terms of festive snacks and stuff like that. So that was my take on the booze and arty festive meal deals, let us know if you
04:11have tried any festive meal deals and what you think about it and thanks for watching.
