In New York, subway cars from the 1930s bring passengers back in time

Paddle ceiling fans, incandescent light bulbs and vintage advertisements: New York subway cars used from the 1930s to the 1970s are back on the MTA tracks as part of the Holiday Nostalgia Rides program. A native New Yorker who dressed in a vintage costume describes a "warm feeling in my heart." "This train brought me back to when I was a little kid, Christmas trees and just good vibes", says a Bronx resident.

00:00I'm 51 and I still find joy in doing this.
00:20So you know, I'm still a little kid.
00:21This transition brought me back when I was a little kid.
00:23Christmas trees and just good vibes.
00:25You know, New Yorkers, we're too, ugh.
00:28We need to de-stress.
00:30This helps de-stress.
00:31It does.
00:32When I, um, I'm originally from the Bronx, New York, so I remember riding the train with
00:48my mom, going to Yankee Stadium.
00:52I remember just being, just happy looking out the window when we went outside for the
00:57outside stop.
00:58Cheers!
01:03U-Train!
01:04Thank you!
01:05Morning, pastors.
01:08U-Train, U-Train!
01:0996U!
01:12So everything about this is vintage from World War II era, the 1930s and 1940s.
01:18The light bulbs, the wicker seats, the ceiling fans, no air conditioning, no PA system.
01:24This is what it was like.
01:2650th Street, Rockefeller Center, DNF.
01:3150th Street, Rockefeller Center, DNF train.
01:34This is how New Yorkers not only got to where they worked
01:39and where they went to school
01:40and where they visited their friends
01:42and where they went shopping.
01:43This was the first mass transit that grew the city.
01:47It used to be, in the early part of the 1900s,
01:50people would have to live very close to where they lived
01:52and where they worked and where they went to school.
01:54But because of the advent of the subway system in 1904,
01:58people could travel in a short amount of time,
02:01and that's what created the growth of the city.
02:0360th Street, F train to B.
02:07Last chance, F train to B.
02:16Well, red is the color of December,
02:19and we love to look in style,
02:21so we have to have our gloves and a hat
02:24to keep our hair in place.
02:27I haven't experienced these lines in particular
02:29because I'm not old enough to remember this,
02:32but some of the other lines, as they were starting to transition
02:36between the 70s, 80s, and into the 90s,
02:39and it kind of brings back a warm feeling in my heart.
02:42You know, the past is going away,
02:52but this is the only way to preserve it,
02:54and see some nice people, and it's a test of time.
02:59These things still work.
03:12Oh, my goodness.
03:28Careful. You got it.
