00:00We are joined live via Zoom by Valerie Levanza and Jethro Dionisio of the Philippine National Shooting Team.
00:08Good morning to you both, Valerie and Jethro.
00:13Good morning.
00:15Good morning and congratulations on your silver medal finish.
00:23First off, let's talk about your experience here at the 46th Southeast Asian Association Shooting Championship.
00:29How was it, Ms. Valerie?
00:34It was a good experience, a learning one once again.
00:40We enjoyed it and we're happy that our delegates from other countries also had a good time in this competition.
00:54How about you, Sir Jethro?
00:57It's been a while since we hosted an international shooting event, so it's really exciting.
01:07Getting to see our friends again from Southeast Asian countries, it was a very successful event.
01:17We're very happy with what happened.
01:21Ms. Valerie and Sir Jethro, this is the Mixed Trap event, if I'm not mistaken.
01:28Yes.
01:29Can you tell us more about the Mixed Trap event for our sports fans who don't know about it?
01:38The Mixed Trap event is composed of one man and one woman.
01:47It's the same format.
01:50We shoot 25 targets in a round, so it's 3 rounds total of 75 targets.
02:01Oh, wow.
02:03For those who don't know, trap shooting is where we shoot a clay bird.
02:13It's orange in color.
02:14It's about half-inch thick, 4-inch in diameter.
02:17Every time you make a sound, it's going to throw the clay away from the shooter.
02:25So you shoot it while it's flying away from you.
02:29A set of 25 birds.
02:35That's one set, 25 birds.
02:38Sir Jethro, upon hearing that, it sounds very complicated.
02:44But how do you maintain the synchronization or synergy as a duo?
02:49Well, maybe that's why it's called trap.
02:53When you're there, you're standing for 30 minutes,
02:58and then watching other competitors.
03:01Six competitors shoot alternately at the same time.
03:05So it's very hard to maintain the composure for the whole 30 minutes.
03:12That's what makes the event very exciting.
03:18Do you have a strategy for getting the silver medal?
03:25Yes, Val?
03:28Go ahead, Sir Jethro.
03:31The strategy was to maintain our composure and not make too many mistakes
03:41while shooting the three sets.
03:45That's our goal.
03:48Yeah.
03:50Ms. Valerie, do you have anything to add?
03:54Yeah.
03:57Just like Jethro mentioned, the goal is to hit more targets.
04:03But to do that, we have to remain focused, we have to concentrate.
04:11Actually, I think that's the challenge.
04:15How to do that in a duration of 30 to 45 minutes.
04:22It so happened that my partner is really good.
04:27Of course.
04:33He played very well on that day.
04:36So I'm thankful.
04:40Ms. Valerie, you mentioned that you need to maintain consistency,
04:46accuracy, and focus in this event.
04:50But how do you train that?
04:54Sir Jethro.
04:58What are your training moments to make sure that you're consistent with your focus?
05:04Well, first of all, the actual training that we do,
05:09we go to the range many times a week.
05:12Aside from that, the mental preparation that we do.
05:18For me, I do meditation every time we're out of the range
05:26and doing a personal physical exercise.
05:28Mental preparation is part of that.
05:30Meditation.
05:33Sir Jethro, meditation really helps.
05:37In the shooting, right?
05:39I mean, who would have thought that you need meditation in the shooting?
05:46How about you, Ms. Valerie?
05:48Yes, especially here.
05:53Sorry, go ahead, sir.
05:55Yes, because we can call it an individual sport.
05:59It can be compared to a golf game
06:05where your opponent is yourself.
06:08That's why you have to be mentally tough for this competition.
06:16So let's talk about your advocacy, Sir Jethro,
06:21you've been a five-time world champion.
06:24And I believe that part of your career is your legacy.
06:30Can you tell us more about that, your advocacy?
06:36Well, at a very young age, I was really a firearm enthusiast.
06:41And I was introduced to the sport by my father.
06:45And then as the years go by,
06:50the firearm, it's always related to a negative side.
06:57It's dangerous.
07:00It's used for crimes and all that.
07:03But aside from the experience,
07:08it's a trait.
07:13You need to be more calm and have respect for firearms.
07:19It is a dangerous weapon.
07:23But once you're trained with it,
07:26you will be very disciplined.
07:30Ms. Valerie, being a woman in a very male-dominated sport,
07:37how do you surpass these challenges?
07:40Or what are the challenges that you face in a very masculine sport?
07:50Well, I started when I was 12.
07:54I've been shooting for 35 years, I think, now.
07:59And I really started with the pistol together with Jeff.
08:05We started with practical shooting and speed shooting.
08:13So the challenge is,
08:17you have to train really hard for a competition.
08:23Alongside with that, there's physical and mental training.
08:29So that takes a lot of time from us.
08:32Before, it was okay because we were still young.
08:38All we do is go to the range and shoot.
08:42But now, as we age, we have our work.
08:48We're in reality now that we have to make a living.
08:54So we also have to make time to train.
09:01So for now, I think that's our only challenge.
09:07Because we're not really that.
09:09Professional shooting compared to other countries,
09:13that's all they do.
09:16Do you think, Ms. Valerie, that this sport is more open to women?
09:21I'm sorry?
09:23This sport is more open to women.
09:26They're more open to this sport, to shooting.
09:29Are there more female shooters here in the Philippines?
09:34Yes, yes.
09:37Way before, when I started,
09:40you would only see a few women in the range.
09:45But now, there's like 50 at least,
09:51in all categories, in the practical.
09:56But in trap shooting, it's increasing.
10:01Because we're inviting interested people to come and try
10:07and see for themselves what they can do
10:12and what they can do if they're interested in this kind of sport.
10:19Ma'am Sir, do you think,
10:22I mean, Sir Jethro is a five-time world champion.
10:26You also won the world title twice.
10:30Do you think, in our generation,
10:33somebody will follow in your footsteps?
10:35Do we have promising athletes now?
10:39Yes.
10:41Actually, right now, we have several young shooters,
10:45upcoming shooters who are getting into it,
10:49who are world champions also.
10:51Men and women,
10:54they call it juniors,
10:57who are doing really well and having the support of their parents.
11:03Currently, we have world champions in the younger generation.
11:11Now, let's talk about the hosting of the Philippines,
11:15in the 46th Southeast Asian Association.
11:19Can you enlighten us, what is this?
11:24Ms. Valerie.
11:2546 Southeast Asian, you're asking?
11:29Yes, for the hosting.
11:31It's composed of Southeast Asian countries plus Chinese Taipei.
11:41So, it's the same format as the regular trap shooting competition,
11:49but the participants,
11:51added the Chinese-Taiwan to that.
11:54So, it's like,
11:56what happened was,
11:59it's also a practice for our 4C Games next year.
12:07Sir Jethro, how are we preparing for this upcoming competition?
12:15So, right now,
12:16we're preparing for the 4C Games for next year.
12:21Thailand will be hosting the 4C Games.
12:25So, right after this Christmas season,
12:29we'll be back to our regular training.
12:32We'll probably be practicing at least three times a week.
12:36With the upcoming election,
12:41we will have a lot of activities.
12:44With the upcoming election,
12:46we will have a gun ban.
12:48Hopefully, we can request for an exemption.
12:53So, we'll be able to go to the range and do our regular training.
12:59Yes, it's a bit difficult because there's a gun ban right now.
13:03But I'm sure that our national athletes will be able to practice for the upcoming competitions.
13:13Hopefully.
13:16Finally, before we end,
13:18any message for please to invite our sports fans to support Philippine shooting?
13:26Sir Jethro?
13:30I invite my friends and especially the young people that we have,
13:35women, men,
13:37if you're interested in the sport of shooting,
13:40like for shotgun, for pistol,
13:41you can visit the shooting ranges near you,
13:45or gun clubs,
13:47or stores near you.
13:49I'm sure they will be very accommodating.
13:52They have gun clubs there where you can try.
13:56And,
13:58whatever event you can think of that suits you.
14:08Ms. Valerie, message to our viewers?
14:11Yeah, I want to invite,
14:14especially the young ones,
14:16to try this trap shooting.
14:19It's an Olympic sport.
14:21So,
14:23we know that Filipinos love shooting.
14:28Come to the range,
14:30and shoot with us,
14:32and come see for yourselves.
14:35I'm so excited.
14:37I'm also interested in shooting.
14:39Sir Jethro, maybe?
14:42Ms. Valerie?
14:44He's happy.
14:46He's happy? Okay.
14:48We can.
14:50I promise.
14:52I will visit you there.
14:54Meanwhile, thank you, Ms. Valerie and Sir Jethro,
14:56for coming to our interview this morning.
15:00Thank you so much.
15:04Thank you for having us.
