00:00A lion was born without a drop of nobility in his blood.
00:18Hi Lin-Manuel, how are you?
00:21Long time no see.
00:22This has been a great year for you.
00:24We're talking here about this wonderful movie, Mufasa, the wonderful, wonderful movie.
00:32Tell me what meaning and significance the original story of the Lion King has in you
00:38and what did you feel when they invited you to collaborate in this one?
00:41Oh sure.
00:42I mean, I remember seeing the original on a half day of school when I was in eighth
00:49grade with my friends Dane Martinez and Claire Newman and, you know, it was just breathtaking.
00:56It was the way Disney took us to a part of the world we'd never been to in animation
01:03before, the way Lebo M's voice is the first thing you hear.
01:08It's just an unforgettable, great movie.
01:10I mean, we're still talking about that original 30 years later.
01:14So I was really thrilled when I heard Barry Jenkins was directing this movie, that it
01:21was a new story set in this world.
01:24And I was, you know, when I read the script, I was really surprised by it.
01:30You think you know everything about Mufasa and Scar and this story visits them at a much
01:36younger age and kind of upends all of our assumptions, which I thought was really exciting
01:42to write about and really musical.
01:43So I was very thrilled to be invited to write songs for it.
01:48So now that you mentioned the director, Barry Jenkins, how did he help you when it came
01:53to the time to sit down and create these wonderful songs for the movie?
01:58Yeah, we had a very open process.
02:00I am not a precious songwriter.
02:02I'm not one of those people who just like, here's my song, make it work.
02:05I'll see you at the premiere.
02:07I would send, we would have conversations about what the song needed to do.
02:12And then I would send him songs just when I'd started and had enough that I felt good
02:16about.
02:17So for a song like I Always Wanted a Brother, for instance, I remember emailing him just
02:21the first verse and chorus and saying, am I on the right track with what you're envisioning?
02:26And he would send back notes on what I'd written and then also thoughts on where the song could
02:30go now that it began to exist.
02:33Actually, that's one of my favorite songs of the movie.
02:37So when it came time to create these songs, I'm assuming it's hard.
02:44There's so many expectations.
02:45It's a Disney movie.
02:46So what was the biggest challenge for you?
02:48Yeah, the challenge was not so much the expectations, mainly because I think that might have been
02:54the case if there was only the 1994 original and then this was the next piece.
02:59But there's been a lot of amazing Lion King music since then.
03:02There's the Broadway musical, which Lebo M and Mark Mancina worked with the genius
03:07Julie Taymor on.
03:10There's Beyonce's album, The Gift, which is songs inspired by the Lion King, which expanded
03:16the vocabulary of what a Lion King song could sound like.
03:19It really brought modern African sounds into the mix.
03:22So I just felt like I had space to play.
03:26And then my job within that space was to really honor the moments of the script where
03:32music carries the ball, where emotion heightens.
03:35I know you have two big fans at home, your sons.
03:40What did they think about you working on this film?
03:43You know, it's one of the weirder things in life is that daddy working on Disney songs
03:49is totally normal to them.
03:52You know, they watched me singing to myself all through COVID while I was writing Encanto
03:59and singing We Don't Talk About Bruno alone in my office.
04:01I have an open door policy in my house.
04:03There's no, you know, they come in and out as they please while daddy is banging on the
04:08piano.
04:09So it was very normal for them actually, but I know they don't know it, but they're my
04:14test case.
04:15I remember once seeing my cheeky thing getting dressed for school and hearing him go, I always
04:22wanted a brother.
04:24And when I heard him humming it to himself, I knew I had written a catchy song.
04:31music carries the ball, where emotion heightens.
04:32I know you have two big fans at home, your sons.
