00:00Bill Belichick, the new head coach of North Carolina football.
00:08We've given you all the angles of why it could work, why it might not.
00:13DRS, I'll start with what I think is going to happen in Chapel Hill.
00:18I'm a little bit skeptical that Bill Belichick's model, the way that he will run his program
00:24in Chapel Hill is going to see success.
00:28But I think success is relative.
00:30Are they going to be an ACC favorite entering next season and reach the college football
00:35playoff?
00:36I would say no.
00:37We showed you the win total at 7.5 and the under has the juice.
00:42But I do think for some of the reasons that people are questioning if Bill Belichick can
00:47have success in the college ranks, people were questioning if this was even an actual
00:52story when it was first reported, is why Belichick actually might be able to build
00:59the program the way that he wants.
01:01Yes, it is a new era in collegiate sports, but Bill understands that.
01:07The professional model, taking advantage of NIL resources and funding, capitalizing on
01:13the transfer portal to build your roster and thus your program.
01:17He gets that.
01:18He is a front office executive in the National Football League as well.
01:23He is not the old guard of a Nick Saban or the old guard of college basketball coaches
01:27that have bowed out in this new era.
01:30He doesn't know the old ways of college football.
01:33He has never worked in college.
01:35And there is still the idea, DRS, of organizational control that you do not find in the National
01:42Football League.
01:43Those guys are professionals.
01:45They have families.
01:46They have kids.
01:47They go home.
01:48They punch the clock.
01:49They get out of the facility.
01:52On a college campus, although players now have much more agency than ever before, you
01:57still get to dictate their schedule.
01:59You show up for practice.
02:01These are your classes.
02:02We've got meetings.
02:03You are home.
02:05That is it.
02:06And that's where I think Bill Belichick and the staff that he built out might be able
02:12to win some football games at UNC.
02:15I could see 7-5, 8-4 in 2025 for the Heels.
02:21Yes, and it's supposed to work because we're not taking a flyer on like, hey, this is revolutionary,
02:26Ben.
02:27A basketball coach is now the head football coach, but he's really just a CEO coach because
02:31he can handle like athletes.
02:32That's not the case here.
02:33Bill Belichick, again, is maybe the smartest human being with knowledge of football that
02:37we've ever seen.
02:38It's not going to hurt North Carolina with him coming in.
02:41It's an upgrade for Bill Belichick over Mac Brown.
02:43The question I just have, once again, is the results on the field, I think, will be there.
02:47And you're right.
02:48Is it a national championship in a couple of years?
02:50Maybe not because UNC isn't that team that does it.
02:52But I just want to see this approach where you're bringing an NFL mentality to 17-18
02:58years old.
02:59Like, NIL is such a wild race at this point now.
03:02You're basically telling kids, before you even step on campus, here's $2 million.
03:06Come here.
03:07Sign on the dotted line.
03:08Then we got here and we'll see what happens.
03:09Are we now going to have contracts that are written up by an NFL crew that's like, you
03:13can't do this, you can't do that, you got to stay for this long?
03:16How convoluted will it be?
03:18And also, as we said again, the free market now in college football, maybe Belichick even
03:22missed by a couple of years.
03:23Because if there's no transfer portal, I actually would buy even more to him getting there.
03:27Because once you're there, he controls you.
03:29Oh, you want to leave?
03:30Well, he can't go to any Division I school.
03:32He can only go Division II at this point.
03:33You could put ridiculous clauses on where those transfers will be.
03:36You can't do that now.
03:38So I wonder if he softens up just a little bit, which he's going to have to do.
03:42But I understand that once these kids play college football, Ben, and get to the professional
03:46ranks at 23 years old, you have the agent, you have the teams around you.
03:51They insulate you and say, okay, here's what your contract is.
03:5317 and 18 year olds with just the father there, hey, I got to get a quick agent.
03:56I got to sign this.
03:57I got to get to school.
03:58I want to transfer out.
03:59Oh, no, they're going to take my money back from me now because I didn't read page 97
04:04of my new NIL contract, which you see in the NFL, those ring binders of how much you
04:09can and can't do.
04:10That's what I'm worried about the most, not the actual production from a coach translated
04:14to the players.
04:15It's everything around it now at this point, Ben.
