00:00Hi, I'm Laura Reid, the Deputy Features Editor at the Yorkshire Post and here's a look at what's
00:04coming up in the week ahead. Yorkshireman Joe Root will find out this week if he's won the
00:09prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. The Sheffield-born cricketer is one of
00:15six sporting stars shortlisted for their outstanding achievements this year. The
00:20other contenders include Keeley Hodgkinson, Alex Yee, Jude Bellingham, Dame Sarah Storey and Luke
00:27Littler. The win is going to be decided in a public vote during the live show in Salford on
00:32Tuesday. This coming Saturday the 21st of December is the day of the year with the fewest hours of
00:40daylight. It's known as winter solstice. The actual moment of the solstice will be at 9.21
00:46in the morning according to the Royal Museum's Greenwich and the shortest day is going to last
00:51around 7 hours and 49 minutes in London. It means that the length of the day is going to be
00:598 hours and 49 minutes shorter than what the longest day was in the summer solstice. After
01:05Saturday the days are going to start getting longer and the nights shorter but the coldest
01:09daytime temperatures of winter are generally felt some time later than the shortest day has passed.
01:17And finally in South Yorkshire a centuries-old tradition of caroling in pubs is in full swing
01:23and according to local carols there's going to be more than 30 sings this week as Christmas draws
01:27closer. Every year from mid-November until throughout December people gather in pubs
01:33across Sheffield and North Derbyshire to sing local Christmas carols that have been passed down
01:38through the generations. The repertoire at different places can vary widely and some places
01:46have their own mini-traditions with some versions of carols unique to specific pubs.
01:50The sings are one of the last remaining oral folk traditions to continue in England.
