00:00With the holiday season around the corner, it's the time of the year for package delivery.
00:03Online shopping has become more popular over the years. The question is how can we get our
00:07gifts safely this season? Star City talked with Sergeant Sean Verma from the Lafayette Police
00:12Department to give some tips for keeping packages safe. One of the biggest things that we want to
00:16remind members of our community is to be very vigilant about what's coming to your house.
00:23So prepare for that. Verma highly encourages taking special precautions with packages,
00:28especially ones with higher value. There's a few options available. One of them is
00:32a signature required, a pawn receipt, and then the other one is you can actually ask for special
00:37delivery instructions. Student Beth Kelly has never had any stolen for the holiday season,
00:41but her sister had lost four packages in the mail. One thing I do worry about, like where I live,
00:47it's pretty open on the street, so like I never order packages to my apartment because that's
00:52like I'm afraid it's gonna get taken. To prevent theft, Beth thinks it's safer to order from a
00:58secure location if you can't be at your home. Order it maybe to an Amazon facility, like Purdue
01:03has the Amazon pickup location, so they like lock it in. She prefers shopping locally for the holiday
01:10season rather than shipping. I love getting gifts from local stores because just it's nice, you know,
01:16support local businesses. You don't have to worry about getting your package stolen. Overall, the
01:20Lafayette Police Department is here for you if you're a victim to package theft. We encourage
01:24you to call Lafayette Police, use our non-emergency line at 807-1200 and tell us it's a theft of
01:30property and try to have some documents available for the officers, like a receipt, a photo of the
01:35item, if you ordered it online. Keep an eye on your packages and have a safe holiday season.
